Low-carb diet interfering with sleep?
« on: June 06, 2019, 04:41:58 AM »
I'm waking up earlier each day I'm on the low-carb diet. I read that taking magnesium before bed might help. Any other ideas?

A little. I have no problem getting to sleep; it's staying asleep that's the issue.

Maybe your body needs less sleep for reasons other than diet?

How many hours a night are you getting? I stay on low carb most of the year and my sleeps are really good.  I actually sleep much worse with carbs.

 Typically seven.

Typically seven.

I notice that I need less sleep when I diet and when my body fat goes down.  6-7hours is enough, compared to 8+ when I'm fatter and eating more

That’s completely normal. I found I got by with an hour less sleep when I went on a keto diet.

I take it you don't have kids.  lol  7 hours, is great man.  Unless you're training and also work a job requiring manual labor, 7 is plenty.

Your body needs energy to sleep because you expend energy when you sleep. Between tossing and turning, digestion, REM, dreaming, stress, getting and urinating, body heat, being under blankets, etc and depending on your size a person can burn up to 1200+ calories in an 7-8 hrs period. Try taking in some carbs before bed.

Slept better last night. I read that sleep disruption is a common side effect of ketosis, so hopefully I've crossed the Rubicon.

Very common effect of keto is waking up early. It’s a biological response to go make u get up and hunt for food.

I never sleep much on diet usually 4-6 hours, but its easy to get a few naps in. Just adjust to it, in my experience the lack of carbs and hunger doesn't allow for a lot of sleep.
