It was mentioned in the WSM thread -

http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=654885.0

Congrats to Licis. I knew he had great potential but I never saw him as winner material so he proved me wrong.

Gotta feel bad for the gentle giant Brian Shaw here at 10:42:

Interesting fact: Brian Shaw's wife Keri used to be married to 2012: Arnold Strongman Classic winner Mike Jenkins. He passed a way of a heart attack a few years ago and then she married Brian.

I didn't know that.

I do recall Jesse Marunde's wife marrying Nick Best after Marunde passed away.

It is just pathetic. Strongman is becoming huge with the public and they should live stream it! I think they want time to edit the videos and make them the best but that can come later. They should still live stream and then come out with an official video release on Netflix or something.

Because it is becoming more popular they are making the weights lighter with reps so the events will last longer. As I said in the other thread Licis does not have the biggest deadlift, squat or overhead press. I don't think he has deadlifted 1000 lbs yet. So I am not sure he is the WSM as far as static lifts go. Thor would take that and a healthy Brian Shaw or Eddie Hall if he was still competing. We'll see what happens at the World Deadlift Championships this year. Many people are wondering if Eddie Hall's 500 kg deadlift will be broken. Benedikt Magnússon wants to try 528 kg but he's had a hamstring injury a few weeks ago doing those crazy dances before a lift lol!

It was hardly a light show. The medley went farmer at 365 a yoke at 1k and the 2nd at 1300. Its never been that heavy at Worlds. It shocked Thors' guys. The prelim stone head to head  was 440...one guy zero'd which u won't see on the show...and the top two guys did 13 and 14 reps. I was there for the whole thing.  There were not a lot of top guys rounding out the field. The truck pull killed a bunch of folks. Anyway it will air here on 30 June CBS sports and at Christmas in the UK. Next year its currently slated for Vegas....subject to change. They just signed a 12 year contract with CBS.

I know the yoke was heavy and I questioned why that was included because a lot of guys got injured and had problems with it. And it is not as interesting to see guys move the yoke for 6 feet compared to a heavy deadlift event. You can't appreciate how heavy it is as much as when you see a bar loaded with a ton of 25kg plates on two sides. And with a conventional deadlift they start from a lower position and because the plates have a smaller diameter the range of movement is far greater. It is much more impressive that them starting from a higher height.

The bigger guys also suffered with the Florida heat. I had questioned the sense of holding the event in Florida in June in another thread. A lighter guy like Licis would have an advantage in the heat compared to heavier guys like Shaw and Thor.

There was not a max deadlift. Licis has yet to break 1000 lbs. So he is technically not the strongest, just the fastest at carrying heavy items.

When Eddie Hall won the WSM in 2017 you could legitimately argue he was the strongest because he lifted more in the deadlift than anyone else.

Being held in hot locations is nothing new for WSM. Also it's not a powerlifting contest and had plenty of heavy events including a grip event.

That medley after the truck pull was nuts and squatting 755 for reps is not light.

You can see where Shaw suffers a partial tear in the grip and losses to Martins. Martins also won the stones at the end.

Heavy yokes are athlete destroyers plus they misloaded the yokes also. Loz tore an achilles on it which means strongman career is out the window. Putting 600kg yoke on your spine and then move with it is an example of how clueless organizers are.

Thor injured his foot on medley also but could fight on. The qualifier medley was over the top heavy and the last man standing event is hated among competitors; Novikov got scammed with it.

Putting more weight each year on events that should not be as heavy doesn`t translate to getting the winner with more brute strength. It just increases injury factor and makes for boring entertainment (heavy yoke).

Could not agree more Loz was gutted after that tear and said it was his last WSM.  As I mentioned before the medley came after the truck pull which made no sense at all especially with the 1300lb yoke after a crazy farmers carry!? The last man standing needs to be done away with along with the groupings. Just run on points and let the best man win.

The other thing that pissed off competitors was they weren't told the events until a few weeks out. Prep is key to avoiding injury and peaking correctly.

Good post! I can just feel my spine twisting thinking of the 600 kg yoke. That weight is just nuts! I bet many of the guys will need a while to recover from this contest. Licis was very impressive with the medley and yoke. But look at Mateusz! He walks with it and never even drops it. Very impressive the guy deserved second place!

JF Caron is possibly the strongest Canadian in history - unless we are to believe the stories of Louis Cyr. French Canadians have won all Canada's Strongest Man contests since 1997. Robert Ploughman [RIP] won in 1996. He was from the former English colony Newfoundland [where I was born].

I don't know what makes French Canadians so strong...but they are.

Meanwhile, Mateusz is a full TEN YEARS younger than JF Caron...and is stronger than him!

The Polish are strong too. Mateusz is stronger than Mariusz Pudzianowski ever was. Amazing for only 26 years old. Mateusz also holds the circus dumbbell record, with a 330-lb press!

Mike Jenkins took 2nd at nationals in Lafayette in 2009. Watching him compete it was obvious he was the best guy there, I think everyone was surprised he finished 2nd...  he was made fun of for having a small rental car, it was something like a cobalt. He was a friendly guy.

I only heard nice things about Mike Jenkins.

Sad for him to have died so young. His autopsy was released in June of 2014, and said he had an enlarged heart. Knowing personally what it's like to compete in wimpy lightweight strongman contests, I can't even imagine how intense the world level open heavyweight contests are.

Or maybe I can imagine...and it's almost hard for me to watch some of these events.

I worry some of these guys won't make 50. Brian Shaw was talking about how he wants his son to watch his achievements, in a YouTube video...but will Shaw be alive by his son's 20th birthday?

Knowing what I know today about physical culture...I just can't be the same sort of can I once was.

You were once a can?  I would assume a tuna can.

Anyways he talks about downsizing when he's done (which should be soon). These guys eat a ton of food so if he lowers calories and ups cardio he should be ok unless he has gone unchecked all these years. Thor seems to have done a lot more damage than Shaw and talks about his issues while bulking.

Trash can!

My bad - I meant can, not can.

I hope you are right about these guys. Being 450-lb does not bode well for a long lifespan.

A heart attack at age 31.....while he only was 401 lbs! Doing a check up with a top cardiologist twice per year seems a smart thing for people participating in such freak shows

In an early 2001 issue of FLEX Magazine, Nasser El Sonbaty stated that he was getting his heart, lungs, and liver checked 2-3 times per year, and that he was very healthy.

^ Close enough to what was stated, albeit the print date may have been late 2000 [but I don't think so], and the organs may have been different.

Someone said Nasser looked...either grumpy or dopey, which they thought meant either liver or kidney damage.

It was a Peter McGough writeup, and he said "The only thing I call Nasser, who competes at 285-lb, is "Sir"".

Leading me to believe that bodybuilders can fight.

This is from memory, but close enough.

It was my first rip-off that bodybuilding wasn't healthy. Why get your organs tested multiple times per year, if you are participating in something healthy?

RIP Nasser El Sonbaty, who stayed 300-lb for too long.
