Best Way Of Keeping Rust Off Plates Outside In A Garage?
« on: June 15, 2019, 08:22:00 PM »
Goodmorrow,

Summer is here and I have 4 Olympic sets in my garage that are no showing rust on them. Is there any way I can coat them with something that would stop the spread and development of rust but still no cause a safety concern?

Even the bars are getting rusty.

Spray them with something like Rust-Oleum paint. Use a primer meant for metal first. Lightly sand before applying. That will help. Keep the bars inside. Ultimately keeping metal outside will lead to rust but keeping a fresh coat of paint meant for metal will help.

Coat them with oil, and get a dehumidifier for the garage.

Light coat of machine oil, coat of wax, or repainting the plates all work.

Tuf Cloth is a good option if you don't want to deal with oil on a bar -

Wipe them down with a light coat of oil.  Unused motor oil is fine.

You can also wipe down the bars.

Put some oil on a rag and wipe them down once a month. or so.

The product originated from Germany before World War I, after the German military requested an 'all-around' oil and cleaner for their rifles and equipment. The German military used it from 1905 to 1945.

Did you ever get your "Some Are" teeth fixed? Seriously...have you looked in the mirror? Bad teeth are a sign of being poor.

First off, WD40 is too slippery. You can't grab the plates and it can't be wiped off because then it you lose all the benefits. I've sandblasted some of the plates and sprayed with rustoleum.
