It's kinda sad how uninsured Americans have to beg for the money to pay for life-saving medical procedures

Yup.

You come out millions in debt depending on your condition.

My uncle had a massive stroke last year and after a year of treatment, had over a million dollars in medical bills. Good thing he worked for New York City and had great insurance. Only paid a few hundred bucks out of pocket.

You need to have health insurance.

You also need to save money to pay your deductibles and co-pays.

You need to plan for this throughout your life.

That's because the hospitals massively inflate their prices to chage that from healthcare funds.

If there werent such a system in place, the costs would be much lover.

If you don't have health insurance the doctors and hospitals ream you full price retail.

If you have health insurance the insurance company knocks down the price they will pay and the provider in the plan has already agreed to accept it.

What a racket.

I am thankful for my mother making get health insurance when i was 21ish and 22ish all through my 20s.  she forced me to get it.  after college I became a mortgage broker and had broker related sales jobs and you are either 1099 or K-1 so you are on your own - and no insurance -  but at the time you could get personalized health care insurance.

it was great - for a healthy guy in his 20s (mid 2000s) it was around $100 - $150 per month with a national carrier -  so $1200- $1800 a year i have coverage. that is cheaper than a cell phone plan or cheaper than running your AC at blast, eating out etc

I believe Obamacare made it too expensive for individual plans and insurance companies do not carry them anymore? - i am not certain - but it was fabolous since your insurance was underwritten for you

It's all overpriced so that you have to be insured in case you get imgured.
Insurance where I reside is around 360 Euros per month... and the nurses at hospitals are ugly too.
Total scam  >:(

When I was between jobs around 20 I had no insurance and broke my nose badly and needed cosmetic surgery.

Cost me only about $800 in those days so it was not a killer.  That would be about $3,150 today.

Taught me a lesson though.

I always thought it was the opposite based on bills I received. When I payed cash with no insurance it was about a 50% "discount". When they know that insurance is paying for it and they will for sure get the money it seems to generally be more.

I guess it might depend where you are.

If a doctor agrees to accept certain insurance he usually agrees to accept what the company pays.

For example, the doc bills Blue Cross/Blue Shield $1,000 and BC/BS knocks it down to $400.  Some dentists charge more than your insurance will pay and they bill you for the difference.

You'd have to work out a discount personally with the doc if you don't have health ins.  Some docs will do it.  Some will not.

Hospitals won't dicker with you.  They just send you a bill with what they charge.

That sucks.

Now that the money's run out the docs and hospital say go die.

It's pretty fracked.

They got $500k and it's not enough?

Do the docs at least wave when they go by?

That's too bad. He needed a better policy. $500k is just a drop in the bucket when it comes to major health issues, specially those requiring surgery.

What kind of treatment or surgery costs more than half a million dollars? No offense, but healthcare in the U.S. is a rip off.

At this point it may be better off going overseas to Thailand or India.  Saw a piece on 60 Minutes years ago of people going to India and having open heart surgery performed on them.  They had a doctor who was trained and worked for years in the U.S., had their own private room and only paid a few hundred bucks.

Yes it is.  I am considering moving to another country when I get older.  With Social Security alone an American can live like a king in some decent places in the world.  The way the U.S. is devolving there may be no choice.

Many doctors in developing countries have formal education in developed countries, usually European countries.

They may charge up to twice the rate that a colleague without those merits charge, but we're still talking about a couple of thousand dollars for a surgery, not dozens of thousands, and definitely not hundreds of thousands.

I was in a hospital just a couple days ago.

The equipment in these places is fantastic.  I mean it is awesome.  It's also fantastically expensive.

Medical education that doctors go through in the States is fantastically expensive...and very difficult.

It all adds up to the bottom line of cost.

If you get really sick it's cheaper to just die.  Cut your family a break.
