why is everyone afraid to say fruit is unhealthy?
« on: June 23, 2019, 12:22:11 AM »
Even the staunchest anti-sugar advocate gives fruit a pass... By why? A normal apple has 20-50 grams of sugar. Five servings of fruit a day? Probably over 100 grams of sugar, any way you alive it.

Some authorities say not to eat more than 25 grams of sugar a day. Everyone loves to hate soda, which has 40-50 grams a can. Whats the difference between eating a couple fruits and drinking a can of soda?

Some people mention the fiber... Do you really believe it "slows absoption"? Subjectively, I don't feel anything to confirm this oft-cited reason, not have I ever seen any research to suggest this.

Micronutrients? Plug fruit into chronometer... It has very little. Eat your vegetables and whatever micros you get from fruit will be a negligible portion of your overall intake. A bunch of spinach, broccoli, carrots, kale, and bell peppers would be a much better investment. Same with phytonutrients, antioxidants, and all the other mystery nutrients that the plant-based gurus prattle on about.

Seriously, I don't get it. Have a candy bar, chocolate bar, or soda and you're killing babies, but remember to get three to five servings of fruit!

Selectively bred for thousands of years to be massive sugar bombs. What's the difference between a can of Sprite and a 500 gram honeycrisp?

Don't tell me it's the "cell matrix" that means your glucose is up to 180 mg/dl over three minutes instead of two ::)

Or maybe it's the 5% dv vitamin C... Which you could get from a sixteenth of a kale leaf.

I mainly stick to berries and if i do eat an apple or a banana it’s after a workout.

BTW you’d expect someone like Tbombz to know his fruit.

And if you do eat more fruit just cut other sources of carbs like grains, potatoes etc. The problem is that the majority of people eat fruit along with other carb rich foods. Take your time and look into other people’s carts next time you’re in a store. 75% of the items include processed carbs, processed meat and candy. Big pharma loves this.

Fructose in fruits is not process white sugar . Inform yourself  ;)

O, yes I'll immediately stop eating about 20 varieties of mango's,durian, star fruit, mangosteen, figs, black grapes, etc., & start dental destruction with Coke & Mars bars.

???

White table sugar is sucrose: 50% fructose, 50% glucose.

Bananas and apples are about 2/3 fructose, 1/3 glucose. Other fruits have more glucose than fructose. All in all, few fruits have a massively skewed ratio.

And everyone agrees high-fructose corn syrup is bad for your liver... So, if the slight bias toward fructose means anything, why would we think it good ???

Some facts:

- glucose causes spikes in blood sugar levels and insulin release which is the body’s most powerful storage hormone

- fructose doesn’t affect blood sugar levels because it goes directly into your liver and is metabolised there

- the liver turns fructose into glucose or fat. It depends on more factors which process takes place. If your liver has a lot of space to store glycogen than that fructose can be turned into glucose and stored as glycogen in your liver. If your glycogen is full than that excess fructose will be turned into fat and stored as fat.

- insulin speeds up the storage of fat

- worst case scenario regarding carbs and higher fat storage: eating a lot of fructose with glucose/starch

Moderate amounts of fruit are good for you. Especially berries. They contain only around 10-15% of sugars and are rich in other nutrients.

full disclosure, I eat probably 100+ grams of sugar on an average day, much of it from fruit. I just don't get how people reconcile the "anti-sugar" craze with "...but a little fruit is good for you". The reasons are always flimsy:

- "fiber slows digestion" (any studies showing by how much? cause I sure can't feel any difference).

- "Micros and phytos tho" (ever read a nutrition label? 50 grams of sugar for 10% dv vitamin C, what a steal ::))

- "it's natural, bro" (ever looked at uncultivated fruits? the weeds that grow along highways? take a bite out of those and tell me how much they resemble a supermarket monstrosity).

Don't think I've ever read a bodybuilding magazine in my life, but care to point out the reasons why fruit is so much healthier than gummy bears?

If your liver glycogen is full than that excess fructose will be turned into fat and stored as fat.

Im not sure that is exactly right. The studies I've seen show that as low as 1% of fructose gets converted to triglycerides, with nearly 50% getting converted to glucose (the other portion being turned into lactate). Now from what I understand this glucose can be sent out into circulation and be used for skeletal muscle glycogen if liver glycogen is full.

There is no difference you are correct. Fiber does change the glycemic index to a degree and the load but the glucose and fructose are exactly the same as it is found anywhere else.

Nothing wrong with sugar. Excess sugar can be a problem but this new wave bs about sugar is horrible for you is wrong. Glucose is the fuel for athletic activities. Real athletes as in running, soccer, basketball would be at a severe disadvantage in the performance of their sport if they did hard core limiting of carbs.  It really does come down to calories in and calories out.  To say you can eat more calories losing weight if you limit carbs is junk science and false.
