A cellphone video entered into the court record by the U.S. Attorney’s office of Paterson police officer Ruben McAusland pulling on hospital gloves and then violently striking an attempted suicide victim in the face. McAusland was sentenced Wednesday to more than five years in federal prison for assault, and for distributing drugs he stole from a crime scene while on duty

Regardless of your feelings on whether the patient "deserved" it, he is likely to receive a significant settlement financed by US taxpayers.

If the money for these settlements were to come out of, let's say, the police union pension fund, I'd imagine we would see a sharp reduction in this type of maladjusted behavior.

It's so frustrating.  The city of Chicago, for example has paid out over half a billion dollars in the last eight years for police misconduct--$113 million in 2018 alone.  And yet, the taxpayer bears the brunt of it.  Nevermind the fact that police officers being investigated are typically placed on administrative leave, ie: a paid vacation.

I am grateful for the presence of police and I understand that they do not have an easy job, but they are well-compensated and voluntarily chose their career.  I do not think it is unreasonable that they be held to a higher standard than a civilian.  Accordingly, I feel that this should include stiffer penalties for the types of behavior exhibited in the OP.

how about the woman who called the police in Minnesota to report a possible assault. when cops came she came out to direct the police, who in turn shot her to death. in the police defense she is a rather frightening individual.
