Happy Earthquakey 4th of July 2019
« on: July 04, 2019, 10:58:08 AM »

Wishing all a Happy 4th of July!

We had a 6.4 earthquake out in Ridgecrest this morning, about 100 miles away from Los Angeles, but since it was wavy rolly type of earthquake, quite a few people felt out out here.

Noth bad in Los Angeles, but out near Ridgecrest, definitely movements, around 10:33am Pacific Time

Not bad here in LV at all, but I did get a couple of local "Did you feel that shake?" calls with minutes after it ocurred.

I've been in two big ones where you could see the ground rolling in the distance and sounding like a freight train rolling in my head.

Nothing plesant and you feel completely helpless.

And the State of California is expecting a giant quake soon ... which some say is 40 years late.

Seismologists know this stuff pretty damn well and predict the ultimate  worst for California when the BIG ONE hits.

California's well-known and largest earthquake fault-line and a map showing its extensive location.

Notice that the San Andreas fault-line lies directly beneath the city of San Francisco!

And in particular ... the Golden Gate Bridge!

But there are hundreds of other fault-lines spread throughout the State of California ... many just discovered recently!

How many California HOMEOWNERS carry earthquake insurance?

It is incredibly expensive with enormous deductibles.

PRINCESS, Good question for those who live with earthquake threats ...

But dont rely on the following being up to date and accurate.

Based on where you live, insuring a single-family house can cost from $2.50 to $5.50 per thousand dollars of coverage (or $1,248 to $2,744 annually for $500,000 of coverage).

As expected, the closer your house is to a fault line in California, the higher your premiums will be, reflecting the higher probability of earthquake damage and the resulting higher cost to protect your assets. California homeowners will need earthquake insurance if they want to be fully covered as damage from earthquakes is not covered by homeowners insurance.

In the LA area the cost is $3.50 to $4.00 per thousand coverage,
whereas up north in the San Francisco $4.00 to $4.40 per thousand coverage.

Plus something like $50K deductibles   :o

It seems like it would only be worthwhile for someone whose house is paid off AND only if "the big one" happened.

PRINCESS, That's exactly what my bro-in-law up in San Rafael (about 9 miles north of the GG Bridge) said about 15 minutes ago.

Why blame San Andreas?

It's not San Andreas Fault though, is it?

The fault line up in Ridgecrest is not the San Andreas fault line.  The second earthquake 30 hours later from the 6.4 was devastating.  A 7.1 is much more powerful than the Northridge earthquake (which I live 3 miles away from the epicenter that day).  I truly feel for the people in Ridgecrest and the area 10 miles around there.  Everything fell off the shelves.  The furniture fell down. The fridgerator went down (it tipped). Cracks all over, in buildings and streets.

For those who are in Los Angeles, both earthquakes felt like gentle rolling waves, swaying nicely.  Maybe a 3.5 to a 4 , but nothing fell down. Yes, the lights were swaying, the grandfather clock dinged, and the swing set in the backyard was swinging, and well as water from the pools moving, but other than that, nothing much.  To the people that are freaking out who live in Los Angeles, come on, you are ok. A train moving on a train track generates more movement.  Most of them have never been through a powerful earthquake, so they don't know.

What is did is trigger a wave of people (including us) making sure we have enough water, fresh batteries in the flashlights, and special lights that go on when the power go off. And lots of chatter. Also, lots of calls from people out of California concerned that we are ok.  Yes, anyone in Southern California is fine. But anyone near Ridgecrest is not - it will take months to recover.

=====================

I learned a lot from the Northridge earthquake.  One, they are unpredictable.  Two, dont put your flashlights in drawers. Those big cabinets, and dressers you think won't fall. They did. Flashlights should be under the bed, or somewhere you can reach them.  Three, all lights go off, and I mean everything. We did not have cell phones back then, but man, those count as flashlights or a light source. We needed them badly when everything is pitch black, and you can't get to flashlights because the dresser fell down on them drawers.  Four, you need socks and sandles or something close.  I did not. Wound up going downstairs, in the dark, until I found a flashlight, went into the kitchen, lifted the fridge by myself (everything went out of it on the floor, then realized only 10 minutes later than I was bleeding from my feet, hands and arms. In the kitchen, all glasses and plates went out and smashed into pieces. In the living room, anything on shelves went down and smashed.  Garage door did not open (electric was out), but worse, items around the car moved so we couldn't even more the car until we cleared it, but with aftershocks coming fast, we knew we needed to be outside. And yes, a toilet broke (all water went out of it), but it also cracked.

=============

So I find it funny that the newscaster clamming for a story are asking people in Venice, Santa Monica if they are ok. Duh. They are in Los Angeles county.  The stories need to come up from Ridgecrest, 120 miles away, where I truly feel bad and understand just what they are going through, especially the children.  By the way, the aftershocks there will continue on for 2+ months or more.

We do, I have to check my policy but I think we're even covered for tsunamis.

I just read a report that only 13% of Californians have earthquake insurance and that many Californians think that their 'regular' home insurance covers earthquake damage ... but IT DOES NOT!

I received a call from family members in Woodland Hills, Cal. Their four kids were jumping on the trampoline so they did not feel it, but the mom and dad sitting on the back-yard porch said that it rolled for a good long time.

Hee in Vegas we felt a slight,  two second, roll (south to north) .... but I'm surprised that there was no reaction from the two dogs ... as dogs, birds, etc. are usually the 'first responders'.

Do you have quake insurance, Ron?

I still beleve (as I stated many years ago) that there will be a massive exodus from So Cal to las Vegas once the big one (San Andreas) hits.

Las Vegas will rattle and roll when that one ocurrs but it's highly unlikely that it will suffer serious damage.

I just hope that I am as bad a forecaster as I am duly noticed by the sports books here in town. *But I somehow always manage to win a t-shirt or a free buffet!

Vegas is trash now.  Much better places in Nevada, Idaho, Arizona and Utah.

I don't know how anyone could live in California anymore.

It is now a complete train wreck.

If most of it disappeared into the ocean because of the San Andreas, well, who would care?

Good riddance.
