Jesse Marunde you mean? He died in 2007, only 27 years old.

Marunde was a better strongman though looking at their records.

Marunde placed 2nd in WSM 2005, only 25 years old. Coincidentally Dominic Filiou did his best competition in that same competition placing 3rd.

True - Marunde outperformed him! And was considerably smaller too.

Filiou may be the highest ranking Canadian since 2000. JF Caron placed 4th this year - his best placing yet. Tom Magee may have won...but that would have been around 1983.

Mike Jenkins had similar stats to Filiou. He died in 2013, aged 31 years.

Terry Hollands was also 6'6" and 390-lb. But I think he slimmed down considerably lately.

Ah! My memory was a bit off. Close though.

I think what confused me - Magee held the Canadian record for the Silver Dollar deadlift - 1,150-lb.

So I confused that with the world record - WSM.

I think there is a small chance that JF Caron wins WSM. But with Mateusz from Poland, it's hard to say.

Met and spoke with Dominic several times. Watched him compete in person...

ABSOLUTELY ENORMOUS MAN.  Long levers, broad shoulders, huge hands. He should have been a World Champion. 

He was very reserved and soft spoken in my experience.

Hugo has recently been displaced by Jean Francois Caron as far as wins go. JF Caron is currently 8x Canada's Strongest Man.

Funny story...in 2013, Hugo said JF couldn't compete in CSM because JF was a professional. JF is under the impression that this was to prevent him from beating Hugo's 6x streak.

JF showed up with his lawyer, and Hugo allowed him to compete. As I understand it, the contest was rigged for Christian Savoie to win...and Caron STILL won.

This was discussed with Hugo on a French Canadian public access television show called "Tous Le Monde en Parles". Or some shit. My French Canadian has not been good since age 20. It may still be on YouTube.

I like Hugo - super nice guy - but I understand how a man's legacy is important to him... and I do think that Hugo wanted to preserve his record.

Unless you believe the legend of Louis Cyr, it's safe to say that JF Caron is the strongest Canadian ever - and since 2017, the winningest.

Hugo and I go back to 1993. His very first day in Golds Venice he came up to me and complained that the low pulley row weight stack wasn't heavy enough.  I rolled my eyes and said, "OK Champ let me show you a
way to fix that... he was not yet a World Class Strongman and I did not know who he was...

I grabbed two more long weight stack pins and proceeded to attach four more 45 pound plates to the weight stack. Then I grabbed an 80 pound dunblell and sat that on top of the weight stack. That turned a 300 pound stack into a 560 pound stack.  I then said, ' will that be enough?'   He smiled and said, "Yes, perhaps...". We have been friends ever since.

I read that as you sitting on top of the weight stack for some reason, lol. I must have missed the word "that" initially. But now I see what you did there.

I had no idea Hugo was training in your neck of the words. I never knew him to be out of Quebec.

Good story. Hugo went into bodybuilding around 2010-2011, and looked really good there too. He must have been 280- or 300-lb at 6'2". The only criticism I would have had for him was that he was a bit blocky - not surprising for a strongman.

The competition has increased quite a bit since his day. I'm not sure how or why. Note that while powerlifters are not considerably stronger than they were in 2002, strongmen are much stronger.

For perspective, I don't think Mariusz Pudzianowski would crack the top six these days - definitely not at the Arnold Strongman Pro. Though it has been said that contests were rigged to favour his medium height [6'0.5"], something I am now inclined to believe was true.

RIP.

I was in college and getting into lifting when I watched him finish 3rd in 2005. I remember being in awe of how big he was. In terms of sheer mass and structure, I don't think I've ever seen a human being that size. Even bigger then the likes of Shaw and Hall, he made the rest of the field look like average men. I was expecting him to go on and win the competition in the next few years but can't recall seeing him compete again.
