Strongest Man in History
« on: July 08, 2019, 05:30:13 PM »
Good first episode last night. They recreate some old-time (supposed) strongman lifts.
Shaw won the viking ship pull (not surprised) Nick Best won the Husafell type stone carry, and Nick was the only one to crack the 1400 lb. log (viking ship mast) off of the uprights.

If you like this stuff, you can set your DVR or watch On-Demand. (I think 7 or 8 episodes will air).
Previews look like they will do Anderson's silver dollar lift, and maybe Thomas Topham harness lift. (So it seems at least).

I think Angus Macaskill is quite likely the strongest man in human history.  Regardless of whether or not they speak on him I will watch the show if possible.  Thanks, brother!

Not sure if I believe the feats attributed to him. They also claimed his shoulders were 44" wide. But when you look at him standing next to other people in photos he does not look that wide.

A lot of measurements are fake.

Brian Shaw's shoulders are supposedly 28.6" wide. Thor's might be a little wider - he might be at 30" in this fairy tale measurement. Mark Henry was "supposedly" measured at 30.5" wide at his biggest.

No way was Angus' shoulders 14 inches wider than the fairy tale measurement of Mark Henry. I scaled his photo below with software and at 7'-9" his shoulder width with the jacket on is about 26.5". Without the jacket probably 24". His shoulders with the jacket on are 40" wide when he is scaled to a height of 12 feet. The dude was scrawny compared to Brian Shaw, Thor etc. As you would expect from someone that tall and means of nutrition, training etc.

I scaled Mark Henry also. He is about 6'-2" tall. There are photos of him next to Eddie Hall and they are the same height. Mark Henry was not 6'-4" tall. When I scale Henry's photo at the bottom to 6'-2" tall his shoulders are 24" wide. 30.5" shoulders are wide as fuck I doubt there is anyone alive with those measurements.

So if they lied about Angus' width then they lied about his lifts. I doubt he could deadlift more than 600-700 lbs.

Its hard to believe many of the tales from the past. On this show for the 1400 lb. mast (log) lift, they speak of a viking who supposedly lifted it, but it broke his back and killed him.
They at least say "if true", etc. The show did, and will get some facts wrong,  but fun none the less.

I wonder if the Saxon Bros would be Instagram attention whores???

Lol about the Saxon Bros.

I heard about the 1400 lbs viking lift. It broke his back but he did not die for his bitches.

Thor actually bested that lift recently.

What's crazy is the yoke event at the WSM 2019 this year in Florida was close to this viking lift weight! And Martins Licis just completely toyed with it.

I was surprised to see Angus MacAskill mentioned in this thread.

I read his Wikipedia page last month after watching the 2018 Andre the Giant documentary again, while reading about acromegaly/gigantism, and reading about historic giants.

I wasn't clear on what this blurb meant:

Quote
Angus Mòr MacAskill (1825 – August 8, 1863) was a Scottish-born Canadian giant. The 1981 Guinness Book of World Records says he is the tallest non-pathological giant in recorded history (7 ft 7 in, or 2.31 m) and had the largest chest measurements of any non-obese man (80 inches, or 200 cm).

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angus_MacAskill

What is a "non-pathological giant"?

Is that a giant whose height is not the result of a hyperactive pituitary gland or a pituitary tumor? A giant who does not have acromegaly, making him a tall person...but not technically a "giant"?

Yup, I saw that video of Thor recently. Was good to see Nick break it off the uprights. The TV show will conveniently leave some things out, but still a fun show for those who like strength/strongman.
Licis really surprised me all thru this past year w/ his videos, and now winning. He doesnt look like some of those giants (Thor, Shaw, etc) but he hangs with them, and more.

His vid's are pretty funny too. Funny guy...

I'm assuming he was just big, without any abnormalities.

Yes he was supposedly of normal proportions. Basically without context people would think he was 5'-10" - 6'-0" tall but when he stood next to a normal person you could tell he was almost 8' tall.

Sandow....Read about some of the things he did. Pulling boats or trucks is not pure strength because much of it is based on body weight. Louis Cyr was also another freak.
Present day strongmen are all on steroids which skews the results.
Sandow on steroids would have been freakish.

finally a show worth watching.

That was a great episode, Shaw and Eddie pinch gripping the York 45 deep dish plates was cool.
Nick doing that record hip-lift was excellent. Great stuff around town there in Georgia dedicated to Anderson.
Seeing his basement was great, train wheels and plates still hanging around there, a collectors dream.

Fun show for sure Funk...

Yes sort of like Shaq at least when he was younger/lighter.  Most seven-footers have weird body proportions but Shaq on his own looked like a normal guy proportions-wise even though he dwarfed most other players.
