Well firstly, chimpanzees live in communal groups and do not generally pair off in monogamous relationships like say, orangutans or humans.

Compare this to male humans who have no idea which females are ovulating and capable of being fertilized.  In order to impregnate a female, a male human will need to copulate with a female repeatedly over a long period of time to ensure that he has had sex with her during her time of ovulation.  In other words, a man needs to enter a long-term relationship with the woman who he wishes to impregnate.
