A 30-year-old man named Sam Waisbren was killed in an elevator accident in a luxury Manhattan high-rise on Thursday morning.

At around 8:30 a.m., Waisbren was exiting the elevator into the lobby of the building, located in the Kips Bay neighborhood on the East Side of Manhattan, when the elevator malfunctioned.

The elevator left him trapped between the elevator car and a wall within the elevator shaft. He was pronounced dead at the scene on Third Avenue and East 25th Street.

The 23-story building, called the Manhattan Promenade, had recently been fined nearly $1,300 because of unsafe elevator conditions, The New York Times reported.

Inspectors reportedly "found that a safety feature on one of the elevators had been disabled or tampered with," and the building was ordered to stop using that particular elevator until the problem had been fixed, but it wasn't immediately clear whether this was that flawed elevator.

Easier said than done. Not everyone is as sharp as getbiggers and make the correct decision in every circumstance.

Do y’all remember when that group of people car accelerator got stuck and they called onstar freaking out about what to do? They eventually crashed killing everybody, and the whole time I’m thinking “why not shut the car off or throw it in neutral?”  People just aren’t that bright sometimes.

I hate graphic videos and that video wasn't really anything.  You can't see much.  A guy gets folded up and that's it.  You're not really seeing any aftermath.

Which is a good thing. It would be ghoulish to see the whole event. I would like to know the actual mechanics of what happened. How does a grown man slip through the tiny space between the elevator and the floor platforms? I actually watch it a couple of times and it still isn't clear to me how it happened.

If you watch in slow motion you can see that the first guy gets out as the overhead piece is already coming down. The guy behind him seemingly tries to squat down and get out before it closes. Like someone trying to beat the train across the tracks.

Thanks. I didn't consider how revealing slow motion would be in this situation. What it appeared like to me is that he was pushed back into the cab, but before his whole body was in the cab, parts of it were crushed between the ceiling of the cab and the adjacent lobby floor. One thing for sure is that I am glad I did not witness this firsthand. It would have become an indelible memory.
