You even got men’s physique guys getting bigger and bigger, looks a lot different than years ago

true - there are some big guys in men's physique but the heavier/wider/thicker guys never do that well in the big events. Brandon Hendrickson and Ryan Terry are no mass monsters and always top of the class. i would like to see Ryan Terry win it.  i really dont pay attention to this division but you cant miss it if you follow IFBB etc

if you are a bigger guy and you do men's physique.... just do classic imho  ??? ???

TAO, Both Classic and Physique are relatively new to me ... and the only difference I see is the shorts/trunks that they  wear.

What is the big difference that you see between them both?

And how does a contender decide on which one to enter?

And do you foresee their eventual risen in popularity over the massive bodybulders as they appear today?

i think it comes to down confidence, posing and body size on why someone picks a certain class

many younger guys (talking state level entry NPC shows) want to compete and most feel men's physique is a good way to get their feet wet. good for them and good for the promoters too. the new division promotes getting in shape and improving yourself with low barriers to entry.   think of it like an basic 5k or 10k road race or low level city golf tournament. anyone can enter. also the board shorts are much easier to put on front of your family than classic briefs or posing trunks - plus most men's physique guys are not running gear - again the division is great and has been a big success

if you have a solid build/run PEDS/ want to compete at a higher level... you should go into men's classic over board shortd.  you do see guys who did well in men's classic transition over (Logan Franklin etc) the posing is half the battle.

I feel classic will be the ideal "bodybuilding look" over all other divisions and it will gain lots of attention but men's open bbing at the Mr. O is still the big division to win. just as time goes on... there will be fewer and fewer men's bbers and more classic bbers. but Open will at big shows will be king for years to come

back in the 1990s when I started reading musclemags - it was bbing ONLY and that was IT -  so anyone who trained to do shows... did bodybuilding since that was all there was.

open bbing will be a freak show for the on coming future (that is fine - keep them freaky) and classic will be the ideal build to aspire to have (there are some amazing men's classic guys out there)

Either  you have a classic physique or you don't , height and weight are irrelevant .

Here’s my buddy Kevin who turned pro in 2012, they look a lot different now, he had to slim way down for physique since he was doing bbing first, he is also 6 ft tall

Looks great. Would be curious in the difference in dosages when he was BBing versus slimming down for physique if you have any idea...

JUICED ,,, You mentioned  Wesley V., so here's his pic.

TACo, Thanks for your explanation, but I got another problem .... Who's Pro and who ain't!?

There are so many pro cards these days that 'I know nutten' regarding who is and who ain't.

I had the opportunity to meet Kevin a good number of times and was really disappointed that he 'retired' from competitive bodybuilding.

And each of these competitors' condition is what some of us strived for when we thought we'd have to 'run twenty miles and kill the bad guys'! (That's the short version of what Chesty Puller expected back in them good old days!)

I'll add one more competitor who looks like he could run that 20 and still hit his intended target. (A vet who served his time overseas.)

But I'll still call BUMSTEAD for the win!

Also curious about average gear levels. Here’s a question: if 100 is the level for a national level bodybuilder gear volume, what number levels would you give to Physique and Classic Physique. I know the mix is different, but overall volume going into system?

For example:
Open bodybuilding 100
Classic 70?
Physique 40?

Would anybody who has crossed categories or worked closely with Coaches on this please weigh in.

Just a quick point on this if I may, I feel a big difference will be the amount of food consumed. Total calories will be much, much higher as expected for Open BB with competitors eating every couple of hours. Classic will be 5-6 meals a day I reckon and therefore less gear needed to convert protein into muscle.

Here’s something to think about, 4x men’s physique O winner jeremy buendia started out in competitive bbing, he didn’t have the “genetics” for it, turned to physique when the division started, wins 4 titles.....

Not everyone has the genetics for open bbing, some guys no matter what can’t carry the size and their structure won’t allow it. If they did they aren’t able to get shredded. Hence there’s a 212 class and now classic. Ex. Guys like Danny Hester won’t do good no matter what in the 212 class or gain enough mass a long with keeping his conditioning, same for guys like Stan mcquay, Tito Raymond, etc...

As for the drugs regimen, and my experience, it’s a combination of things, lower dosages, less compounds here and there, no insulin, gh is hit or miss

this ^^^

the new posing trunks are a win

if you want to win in men's classic at the national level - conditioned stage look is hard to beat
