Broke up with my gym owner this morning
« on: September 16, 2019, 12:59:14 AM »
I always like to support the small independent guy. Been training at this gym for 11 years now and had no complaints. Was only a small place and it didn't have everything, but the equipment was well thought out and I never felt like I lacked anything.

But it was always a bit of a drive for me. Newer, chains closer to me have opened in my town over the past few years and my wife has been on at me to change because of the time I'd save in travel. But no - I'm loyal. This guy is going it alone. I'm happy to support him.

Well, on the weekend, a brand new mega gym opened. Three floors of fucking everything. Not the sort of place I'd usually train at, but it's only 4km from my door, and I have to admit, the variety of stuff on offer was impressive.

I slept on it and jumped ship today. My (former) gym owner was shocked but he knows it's business. I can see this new place swallowing every other gym in town.

I feel like a bit of a girl, to be honest but I'll get over myself.

Any of you guys feel sense of loyalty to your gyms?

I went to the same gym for 30 years. Unlike your situation this gym was only 3 miles from my house at best. They have an excellent array of equipment, from Nautilus to hardcore lifting which is done in a separate room to muffle all the sounds associated with maximum power lifting moves, including blaring rock music that you a can crank up a much as you want.

Although I still go there, I do go to other gyms around town mainly because it doesn't cost me anything and the variety of equipment and change of scene is fun. But, I remain loyal to the old gym, mainly because there are a lot of familiar faces that have been around a long as I have. It's family owned and run. The owner's wife runs the front counter and is a certified trainer who used to compete.

Of course, especially after training at the same place for 10+ years.

But if a better equipped gym would open up even closer, i can understand that you would switch. Time is of course very important.

Was it 4 miles to the old gym and 4 km to the new one?

Pretty much. Depending on traffic it would take 20 - 30 minutes to get to the old gym. I live in a very small country area, so this isn't nothing. The new place is 5 minutes tops. I have a new work schedule too, which is what the wife was going on about. She said I was often coming home complaining that I had to cut a workout short because I was waiting on equipment, or I'd gotten stuck on the drive there/back and needed to jump because I had to be somewhere else afterwards.

With the new place, there's just so much stuff to use I'm having trouble imagining that I'd not find an alternative if something was being used. Or just a duplicate. There are something like 6 squat racks there...

Interesting that you mention this.

It was only today, I was sitting there in the gym, waiting for the only rack that I can really rack pull on.  And then immediately after for 15 minutes, for the only leg press.  I began to entertain the possibility of jumping to the big chain gym that is also closer to my house.

I've been at this gym for a similar time to you.  I like the people, I like the atmosphere, but I'm starting to think a bit like you.

What? Today?

You posted this at 4:50am

So... I’m guessing that you train at 3:00am.

I heavily doubt that at 3:00am that you are “sitting there” at the gym, “waiting” for equipment.

PS: I notice that the OP posted this thread at exactly 2:59am

You do what's best for you.

Commercial gyms are businesses and they have to compete for customers.

If your old gym owner really loved you he'd move his gym closer to you.

If I were you, I'd take a moment to think about how incredibly foolish that post was and come back in a few days with a new resolve to think a little clearer.  I'm embarrassed for you.

It could be worse, you could be so fucking stupid that you read a post from someone at 5am and then assume that since you're in the centre of the earth with every other person -  that there's a conspiracy afoot, somewhere in your area to defraud board members of their right to hear true gym anecdotes about waiting for equipment. ::)

Prime mentioned his gym on another thread awhile ago. I looked it up. I have never in my life seen a gym the size of his gym. You could fit 10 of the current Gold's gym inside it and have a lot more room.

Sounds like something Henry Rollins would say.
