Chuck Norris fighting Rickson Gracie in the 1980s
« on: September 28, 2019, 08:47:10 PM »
Even as a kid I knew the huge flaw while training in TMA (traditional martial arts). There was never any, as they call it in BJJ, "free training", where you just go at each other unrehearsed like boxers and wrestlers do. All of TMA were choreographed techniques with your opponent just playing along. You got promoted by how well you performed "Katas" which were just a rehearsed set of movement having little application in a no holds bar fight.

Though I was not too keen about grappling and wrestling, much preferring to punch and kick ala Bruce Lee who was my hero as a kid. But I couldn't deny the effectiveness of BJJ. Also, I was in full accord with the Gracie's approach. When you walked into their school there was no bowing or ceremony. They just shook your hand always with the "My friend" greeting" and just got down to business -- fighting.

There were always ongoing arguments and debates about which martial art was the most effective. The Gracie's weren't about debate and discussions, they the best way to prove which was the more effective fighting strategy is to just fight. So, Rorion, along with his brothers would just go to seminars and challenge anybody to fight. They had an ongoing offer of $10 grand to whoever could be them with no investment required by the challenger. And we got many challenges of those showing up hoping to make easy money and often returning as students.

Where was another typical demonstration during the late 80s early 90s when Rorion was promoting Jiu-Jitsu and it's effectiveness by going around and beating up other martial artists.

I actually left Rorion's school after about a year and trained at Rickson's after he had a falling out with Rorion. But after a couple of years Rickson was hardly there as he was travelling so much.

So, I actually spent most of my BJJ training with the Machados when Chuck Norris was there. I never heard of any falling out but Rorion was more of a businessman back then and the only one really teaching was Royce who was not a legit Black Belt at the time. The Machado brothers we're all legit (Rigan, Roger, Jean-Jacques, Carlos, and John). They were the premier academy in America at the time.

When Chuck got that Texas Ranger show he took Carlos with him so he could continue to train. Chuck may have been an actor by trade, but he was a martial artist at heart and a tough dude.

He set up Carlos who brought BJJ to Texas.

If given the opportunity, i would fight the Gacys (Michael, Christine, John Stanley and John Wayne).

I already answered that question with my customary, agonizing, verbose detail. I'm not going to repeat myself. If your memory is that short then I'll leave it to you search back for the posts.

You seem to be itching to get into a pissing match with me. This is not something I look for or like to be involved in but I won't back down if provoked. People like to say how I'm always getting into long drawn out internet battles, but I never start it. Take note that I never ever address you directly, it's always you nitpicking at me. I understand you don't like me. That breaks my heart, but you should just ignore me.

Don't start with me. You'll regret it.

Best thing is to not respond to such posts, Pellius.

Cool video of Norris. He was humble enough to admit what he did not know.

I remember in some of the early UFC's the standing guillotine was winning a lot of fights. Renzo Gracie was teaching our our class and I asked him is there a defense to that?  He said many but showed me one simple counter. Then it seemed nobody was trying to use it in the UFC for a long time. The game is always evolving.

Seems the UFC has evolved in so many ways. First was Gracie and Pride fighters with ground fighting. The American Wrestlers took over with ground and pound for awhile.  Stand up strikers ruled for awhile who were skilled in avoiding take downs. Then a hybrid mix.  The way I see it and let me preface this with I'm not a fighter though I fought a little in my younger years is that you need all aspects of fighting. Pure BJJ guys have trouble with guys they can't take down or hold down. Many have piss poor striking.  Pure strikers are drowning when they are taken down by a BJJ. The guys that seem to adapt and learn BJJ the quickest are the guys who wrestled in high school and college.

Another aspect is we are not cave men. We actually have evolved to use weapons. I train with weapons regularly and avoid trouble. Though I dealt with trouble for many decades. It's good to be an old man.  An old man won't fight fair.

Pellius how is the knee coming around? It will be a slow recovery to get your strength back but I hope the pain will be completely gone in time.

“Yeah well that was Chuck Norris, not Mike Tyson. Late 80’s Tyson would’ve murdered him!!!”
- Every Tyson PNUTHUGGER on Earth

PS, Ron has banned the term ‘PNUTHUGGER’ without the P. I believe that a well intentioned Mod was trying to prevent people from using the N word so they overreached and blocked any word that starts with an N and ends GER. What’s this world coming to?? Can someone please mention two countries in Africa and see what happens?

If you look at the Video you can see Norris was playing along. He is very experienced in kicking  etc and what we see in the Video was a half hearted weak kick. not what he really can do. I know all These  BJJ guys think they are superior in every way but they are not. Norris no doubt had some reason for helping them and as we know was a fan of BJJ.

The UFC of today is very different because of the rules.

Not really. Only thing I can think of is no kicking a guy when he's on the ground. Still the same. Only thing that is different is that you don't fight again if you win on the same night.  Guys would fight three times on one UFC against fresh opponents.

They stand the guys back up after only a short time which takes away a lot from the ground control guys.

Also having rounds is a huge difference.

Like I said he is reacting aggressively.  I'm not saying it is Pellius fault.  It is a natural reaction to respond like that.  Sometimes it is a good thing.

He isn't that old.

He knocked down a fellow who tried to steal his cheeseburger a while ago.

I am sure he means it when he says , you'll regret it.

He may be a bit older than you, but he is still fierce and have trained for ages.

Huge range on arms and legs as well.
