In my opinion and observations Trump's main interest in Putin, Russia and Ukraine comes down to OIL.
Russia took Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
By 2015, the USA and other nations kicked Russia out of the G8, making the G7.
Obama also placed economic sanctions on Russia and some oligarchs.

FYI, Crimea has a massive oil pipeline and shipping port.
Putin and his energy industry oligarchs need the sanctions lifted to go full bore on the international oil shipping.

If we (USA) don't get into this, China could join in with Russia.
THAT would be bad for our energy needs.

We led a war to liberate oil rich Kuwait from Iraq in 1991.
We sell arms to Saudi Arabia for decades,  in exchange for a good deal on oil.
