Hartford Barbell Studio:
Saturday morning we all meet at he "Y" parking lot load into a car for the half hour drive to Hartford.
We finally get there and the gym was only about 20 yards wide or so but went back into the back room for quite a stretch.......quite long, but narrow.
The first thing I have to mention that this place was in a Peurto Rican ghetto, but had all kinds of very serious trainees of every race really pushing it.........we`re talking old school hardcore shit right here.
Anyway, the owner of the gym was a guy named Bob Colli and he was getting up there in years.......had to be between 55-60,small almost frail looking, but there was old pics of him in his prime and he was quite big and was a competitive Olympic lifter back in the day.
This fucking guy was nuts.............a real character if I ever saw one.
He would walk through the gym and say to people:
"Hey bud, doing T-Bars huh,how many plates..........oh 6 plates, then without a warmup and just sitting at his desk all day he would grab the weight and do 5-6 reps just for shits and giggles!!

Another guy was squatting 315 and when he racked it,Bob got under the bar and did 3-5 deep reps.......no warmup or anything.....guy had to be around 55-60 years old.........I`m guessing here because I was so young but he seemed ancient to me at the time.
I`m going so far back here that in this gym I saw the first pec-deck I`ve ever seen outside of ads in magazines.............it was made by Ed Jubinville of course.
Harris was doing textbook reps with the 80`s on flyes and Bob walked by and said, there`s something you don`t see many guys doing anymore of.......heavy flyes ..he didn`t try them though....but I wouldn`t doubt if he could have done a few reps with them.........the guy was incredible.
They had a shitload of old musclebooks for sale so I bought a ton of those bad boys..........I bet I read almost every magazine bck in the day from cover to cover about a zillion times over.
Well as I already mentioned a shit load of times earlier in this thread several times over,Harris was one dedicated son of a bitch, big, strong, and young..........too young to actually be so big and strong, because it made him act cocky at times.
Well,on this, our fiirst Staurday visits to Hartford, these two guys walk in and they both looked big in their clothes, but one guy really stood out and looked fucking huge.
His name was Paul Santos, and he was wearing coveralls as he was an auto mechanic, the other guy was his training partner Neil Hastey.
Paul was dark skinned and of Portugese descent, while Neil was blonde with freckles, and looked a bit like a young Dave Draper but much more streamlined and harder looking........had a beach boy type of look to him,but great build.
The first thing Santos says to Hastey is"Hey Neil did you get my Staminex"? Real nasty tasting old school product but after I heard him say this I went out and bought some! LOL

Anyway, once I saw these guys I said to Harris:
"Damn Ray,that guy looks fucking enormous".
Harris replied,:
"He ain`t shit" !

These guys walked the length of the gym to the small changing room in the back which had a single stall shower.......this little room also had the pec-deck back there and a few other pulley type things.
So we walked back there to do some pec-deck work but actually we wanted to see what this guy Santos looked like.
Once he got undressed to change into his sweats, what we saw was a guy that looked fucking incredible.
At the time he was training for the AAU Mr. America...............th
ere was no NPC back then.
Then we watched him train......first time I ever saw anyone do inclines with the 150 pounders..he got 2 sets of 3 clean full reps, and this was on a shaky old incline bench that had a footplate on it and no seat.....you just leaned against it at a 45 degree angle.
Another time I saw him do 20 reps with 300 pounds in the front squat, arms crossed and all deep reps ATG.
All around the gym he had pasted small pics of a bodybuilder named Pat Neve and under each pic,he had written:
"THE ENEMY"
Neve was a favorite for the title, but never ended up entering that particular year anyway.
Harris never talked shit about Santos again.........he was humbled to say the least but we were learning a lot more about hardcore training which is not what guys do today, and I don`t care who they are, pro or not.....................
most train like kunts!! LOL

In fact in my getbig inbox I have a PM from Chris Aceto who says to me wes these guys don`t train anywhere near like we did .........they train like pusssies.
He should know as he`s one of the top trainers around today.
I`m not trying to insult anyone here with my statements as I`m positive there are quite a few fucking monsters out there who get out of their comfort zone daily but they are few and far between these days compared to the legends of old.
Trust me on that we didn`t do quarter rep curtsy squats or curls in the squat rack or use big red balls to work our stabilizes..............
..fucking laughable to me really............also full reps full extension full contraction.............
..the only time we did partial reps was as an intensity technique to extend a set and tax a muscle further.
We more than likely over trained big time but it was a badge of honor to train like a fucking animal back then.
Another weird thing about this gym was they had a set of gymnastic rings hanging from the ceiling right as you entered the gym proper and everyone who walked in hung from it for a second or two and ...........no clue as to why some kind of gym ritual or some weird shit I guess.
We also saw Bob Galucci there one time but he wasn`t training that day....................c
laimed all natural but was truly friggin huge.
Another truly weird cat that I met and became close friends with there was a guy named JoeDellagelfa...........
....looked about a skinny 160 pounds or so with thick nerdy glasses.
This guy had the world record for doing both chinups and pulldowns using only two or three fingers as his grip................incr
edibly strong..........shook my hand once at the bar I worked at and I dropped to my knees..........thought he broke my fucking hand.............he just smiled with his thick glasses the prick!
He also did insanely heavy leg extensions..............
..530 pounds and told me that he had to stop doing them because he felt that his shinbones were actually beginning to bow and bend.............what a fucking strangely cool and strong bastard he was................the bookworm strongman of Hartford.
That little hole in the wall gym with chalk dust everywhere was one hardcore fucking gym!!
