Lectin free diet
« on: October 06, 2019, 11:31:33 AM »
Anyone hear of this?

Anyone ever try it?

55 year old guy I know doesn't work out. Does this lectin free diet. Lost about 20 lbs around waistline. Doesn't run, no sit ups , no weights. Just cut out lectin and lost about 6 inches off his waistline.

Just read an article about lectins causing problems.

https://gundrymd.com/reduce-lectins-diet/

Sounds like BS to me.

He probably lost weight because his daily caloric intake decreased, as he stopped eating bread and potato which are very easy to overeat on.

If anything eliminating lectic might make you fatter as lectins may actually reduce the bodies ability to absorb nutrients.

In order to compare the efficacy of any diet, you have to control for the calorie intake. Keto diets work, for example, because you cut out an entire macronutrient, or at least severely restrict it. That makes the total calories go down and hence you lose weight.

Research has shown over and over that once you restrict calories you can lose weight on any diet- all carb, no carb, medium carb, whatever.

Possibly. That's usually the case with any diet. That concept is not lost on me. He still eats bread made from sprouted grains. I have no idea how much his daily caloric intake went down or up for that matter.

Birds don't eat avocados either, a mainstay of the lectin free diet. So what's the point :)

From the Mayo Clinic:

ANSWER: No scientific evidence exists to show that eliminating dietary lectins will cure any medical disorders or conditions, including autoimmune diseases. But your diet certainly can have an effect on the way you feel, especially if you have a chronic condition. If you have a medical concern triggering symptoms that seem to be related to the foods you eat, consider talking with a registered dietitian, who can review your diet and offer suggestions for modifying it in a way that may help ease your symptoms.

Mayo clinic?  What do they know?

When I want a real doctor I go to a chiropractor.

The number 1. Thing I ever did as far as changing my diet that had drastic improvements on my overall health was completely cutting out dairy.

The first things was that I had far less digestive issues, I didn’t have them bad before but after I cut it out I almost had none at all.  Even when my kids brought home a nasty stomach bug I caught it but it hardly had ant impact.  The second thing I noticed was all of my facial psoriasis issues cleared up immediately, within days I mean.  Then over about a 60 day period I lost about 10 lbs without doing anything different in my workouts.  I use coconut and almond milk now and I love it, I have no desire to go back.  Now my next step is cutting out red meat because I’ve read numerous studies that this too can trigger some inflammatory markers.
