How does an automatic watch work?

I tried to Google it, but I am still confused. An automatic watch like this, does it get power from the movement on your wrist?
And can wou wind it up to give it more spring / "battery" life?

yes...self winding watches have a off center weight that spin as you go through your day and keeps the watch wound.

Some collectors have a stand that they put their self winding watch on at night and it slowly turns over and over to completely wind the watch.

My sea dweller can stay off the wrist and stay running for almost 3 days thanks to the 70 hour power reserve, if I wind it up once a week to full wind anyways.If not full wind it will go about 2 days.

I bought a Weird Ape (only £200) it stops after a day, I didnt know it was a winding watch when I bought it, almost phoned them to say the battery had gone... ;D

Hahaha yeah I bought my wife an automatic watch years ago and she thought it needed a new battery or broke too.

I bought a nice Omega Seamaster automatic and it was so nice I never wore it because I was afraid of scratching it.
Went out and bought a  Eddie Bauer  Citizen Solar powered watch made of titanium that never needs winding/batteries  and will take a beating and last a lifetime.
Sold the Seamaster.

Mr.Her Fuhrer was wearing nice wrist watch 24/7

Now we knew that this charming couple never died in Berlin '45  ;D

+ A.H. Iron Cross from WW1 was missing too  :D

Old timers, like me, sometimes do. It's more habit than anything. What's weird is that I check the time on it pretty often.

Yes it self winds with the movement of your wrist by a simple counter weight although you can also manually wind it up as well.  It will only wind up to a certain point

This is the Seiko watch I replaced with the Seiko solar. The solar is thinner, which I prefer. Costwise they're about the same.

I wouldn't count on the Citizen solar lasting a lifetime.  Mine lasted about 16 years.
My Omega Seamaster GMT, however, is going strong after 15 years.
