What do y’all tip your people?
« on: December 18, 2019, 05:25:43 PM »
I’m not talking about wait staff, but folks who do service things for you like clean the house, cut your hair, massage etc.? With Christmas coming up I want to make sure I’m not insulting them. Thanks.

Hair cut,I pay 10 and tip 10.

Trash guy gets 100 at Xmas and I throw him a random 20 here and there as he takes my trash with no stickers.

Mailman 100 at Xmas

My valet guys at Mohegan sun 20 in and 20 out if I lose for short parking if I win I’ve done 100-300 out as they are great guys and they hook me up with all kinds of stuff. I’m there at least once a week.every scotch I tip waitress 5.00.

Besides waitresses these are the only people I tip.

Haircut I tip $2 lol shave the sides & spike the top. Shouldn't take more than 7mins. I'm not there to chit-chat.

Restaurant 15-20%. Depending on how often I go to the place (sushi places usually 20%, sometimes 25% or throw the actual chef some cash as well so they take care of me whenever I go with a new girl)

Wtf else do I tip???

Oh, maids I used to tip $100ea (old lady & her niece/daughter/grand daughter, whoever she was).

Dated a couple waitress who hate Canadians. Said they never tip. (Live in a resort community that tripples in population over the cold months, with about half that being from Canada)

Are you talking year round tips for every time a service is provided or specifically year end /christmas tips?

Speaking of tipping I was reading about how much to tip hotel cleaners, given I stay in hotels 1-2 weeks every month. I read that typically people tip a total of 10-15% of the total bill. That seemed high to me, no?

For you that would prob be a lot of money as I imagine you stay in some fine ass hotels.I used to go to Disney a lot with the family and the stay for two weeks in a 3 bedroom villa which was expensive and I would tip the cleaning lady 20 when I wanted her to come in which was every other day so would be around 150 for two weeks,I thought that was good being as she would be in there for an hour and that’s around 1.5% added up against total.

For the first time in my life, I have a regular gardener whose crew shows up once a week. Sometimes it's just one fellow and othertimes it is a team of two. Is it normal to tip/gift one's gardener at Christmas? Should I just tip the two guys who do the actual maintenance, like you would a server in a restaurant? The mail carrier left me a Christmas card in my mailbox with no stamp and her return address handwritten on the front of the envelope. This is a nice, but confusing gesture. Is she looking for a Christmas gift from me?

It’s all relative to the hotel grade you’re right. For work travel I tend to be fairly cheaper If it’s just me and no family. But NY 3 stars are still $200 a night so $25 a day. That just seems crazy and I put myself through school waiting tables so tipping is super important.

That is weird of mail lady to do that,I don’t think I would tip if they are basically demanding one.Lawn guys,if they do good work and are friendly then yeah I would tip each one of the workers not the company itself.

Good advice. Thanks.

I thought the bid for a tip (if that's what it was) from the mail carrier was odd. Not sure her boss, the USPS would approve her essentially sending out Christmas cards with no postage.

Yes. She's angling for a gift.

---------------------

I've taken to tipping like piece work rather than one bulk payment for most people. Due to routes and such, we might not see the same mail man, etc..... all that often, so it's just easier to throw him $5-10 during the times he does something nice.

Barber, Waiter, Misc service staff? 15-20% depending on how nice they are.

The guys I know that tip trashmen, tip from a range of $25 - 100, the guys on the top end of that range usually expect and get better service, and perks like not being hassled for bulky trash, etc.....

Christmas. I tip wait staff well when they do their job and are good at their craft. It’s rare I tip below 15% of total bill, even if they’re shitty.

We usually do $15 per day if they really get in there and make it tidy upon our return. $25 day if it’s a nice hotel. I stayed at Hotel Raphael in Paris and I think I left $150 for five days and that place was close to $900 a night.

I tip:
My barber: Zero
My trashman: Zero
My mailman: Zero
Valet: Don't use 'em. I park my own car.
Waiters: Don't use 'em. I meal prep

Money is not a plaything to be handed out in order to look like a bigshot. Money is meant to be invested and grown via compound interest or appreciation, depending on the vehicle. The only tip I can offer anyone with their hand out is to get a real man's job.
