I tip:
My barber: Zero
My trashman: Zero
My mailman: Zero
Valet: Don't use 'em. I park my own car.
Waiters: Don't use 'em. I meal prep

Money is not a plaything to be handed out in order to look like a bigshot. Money is meant to be invested and grown via compound interest or appreciation, depending on the vehicle. The only tip I can offer anyone with their hand out is to get a real man's job.

maybe if you had a real man's job you would have enough money to not be cheap and inconsiderate

Hmm? Interesting...

Barber: he's a friend. Gives me a "clean up" for free often. No cash. I always buy lunch, Starbucks, pizza
Garbage man:  zero
Mailman: zero
Gym check in staff: Starbucks gift cards

In a casino:
Room Maid: zero
Anyone bringing anything to the room: $10 minimum
Dealers: I win, they win.  I lose, they get nothing.
Slot attendant: low of $20 on a hand pay, highest ever on a hand pay was $500.
Bartenders: Drinks are always comped so $5 per drink minimum.
Valet parking staff. $10 minimum.

Christmas. I tip wait staff well when they do their job and are good at their craft. It’s rare I tip below 15% of total bill, even if they’re shitty.

We usually do $15 per day if they really get in there and make it tidy upon our return. $25 day if it’s a nice hotel. I stayed at Hotel Raphael in Paris and I think I left $150 for five days and that place was close to $900 a night.

That’s about what I’d tip albeit I don’t think I’ve stayed at $900 a night hotel. I was traveling back and forth to Paris this past spring working with one of the soccer teams there. 3/4 star hotel was small and even pricier than NY.

The only services I use that merits a tip are restaurants and food delivery. They usually have a selection on the bill of how much percent you want to leave topping off at 30%. I tend to pay more attention to the actual amount I'm leaving rather than the percent. For food delivery, it starts at $10 no matter what I order but if 20-25% of the bill is more than $10 then I'll leave that. 30% sounds like a big tip but last week at Denny's my order came to about $12 and change. No way I'm going to leave just $3.50 tip. The minimum is going to be $5 no matter what. I also have this personal rule that every time I tell a homeless bum approaching me begging for money to fuck off, I make a note to give an extra five bucks to an actual working person.

I use to do tip related jobs like pizza delivery and it really sucked to be stiffed. You drive and walk in the rain, climb stairs, walk up muddy trails, go back and forth trying to find the right address because the customer doesn't even leave the porch light on... and they just take their order and slam the door in your face. In those days five dollars really helped. Your hourly rate went from $6/hr to $11/hr just from that one deliver.
So I remember that and 5-10 dollars is nothing for me now but I know it means a lot for the working man. And it's always in cash to keep Uncle Sam's grubby hands off of it.

Not everybody can start out with a "real man's" job and are working and trying to put themselves through school or maybe working an extra job to save up more quickly for a house.

If you don't tip and are a regular customer, believe me, the workers take note. On food delivery, you always go to the back of the line even if your order came first. And with these food services like Uber Eats or Door Dash, the driver is dipping into your food. Taking a few french fries or Onion rings or anything type of "finger food" on the tip over.

A lot of it has to do with class. It shows what kind of character a person has on how they treat service industry workers. Women are far more likely not to tip than men. They are used to and more comfortable being served whereas men seem to be more sympathetic to the guy just trying to do some honest work for a living.

If I'm at a restaurant and I get bad service or attitude from the waiter, they will get zero tip. That's the point of a tip, to encourage good service, it's not a right.

However, in 99% of cases I leave a tip. Where I live it is optional, most people don't, so even if I give my standard 10-15 % tip the waiter is always very thankful.

I don’t really go anywhere that tipping is expected, the woman cuts me hair, don’t go for meals ect, only ever tip regular the lad who comes with the grab wagon to take excavation away for me at work as he will usually go the extra mile compacting it into the truck bed so it all fits in one load even if he’s running over weight saving you money on a second wagon load So always give him extra £30-40

For the first time in my life, I have a regular gardener whose crew shows up once a week. Sometimes it's just one fellow and othertimes it is a team of two. Is it normal to tip/gift one's gardener at Christmas? Should I just tip the two guys who do the actual maintenance, like you would a server in a restaurant? The mail carrier left me a Christmas card in my mailbox with no stamp and her return address handwritten on the front of the envelope. This is a nice, but confusing gesture. Is she looking for a Christmas gift from me?

She's threatening you. If you don't give her something then your mail is going to get lost. That's the message.

That would rouse my ire. If I were a retired man with time on my hands maybe I'd have a new pet project.

Restaurants, I do 2 x the first number, but always round it up.
Delivery people (furniture, etc) just throw them a 10 each.

Haircuts - doing my own for 30 years, no need to tip myself.
Garbage, mail, etc. - zero, its their job.

I actually agree with this concept mostly.

I don't/try not to tip just because it is expected because they chose an industry to work in that they are expecting that. I will, however, tip randomly people that are legitimately doing a good job, etc. Those are usually individuals who are not working in those industries and have often wished I was rich in order to really make someone's day/life who has really stood out to me as being a genuinely good person/worker in any industry.

I'm a bit surprised, well maybe I'm not, that there is just a like of good old fashion goodwill towards other people that put in an extra effort to be polite, courteous, and provide good service.

I remember this time last year I was standing in line to get one of those ice creams at Dairy Queen where they hold it upside down before they give it to you. The place was packed and their was only this one Black kid, about 16 years old, taking orders. People can be such pigs. Disgusting inconsiderate, self-entitled, pigs! These fatsos (and they were all FAT!) were riding this kid like a third world donkey. Bitching about the wait, want more napkins, how come this fatso got his ice cream before this other fatso that said he ordered before him.... it just went on and on. Disgusting fatsos waiting impatiently (most eating something while waiting) to get more fatso treats to stuff their fatso face utterly clueless about how busy it was and it was all on this 16 year old kid.

But that kid, that teenager (a group I have inherent disgust for), just kept that smile on his face. Just polite as hell. It was unbelievable! What great parents he must have. Most likely Military because that's overwhelming where the tiny minority of Blacks here come from.

When I got my order, and he also turned it upside down with a big smile, I told him how impressed I was. I gave him a twenty and he gave me my change and said, "It's OK. It's easy to be nice when people are nice. It's when you're tested that you see what kind of person you really are."

I was floored! I wanted to talk to him more. Find out everything about him. How do you become like that? When I got my change I then stuffed a $10 in his pocket which he predictably protested. Just letting him know that he makes a difference. For that one passing moment, he made my life just a little bit more pleasant. As much as I like to punish bad behavior I like to reward good behavior. Promote a feeling of goodwill and it matters how you treat people
