Gene Dynarski, Actor on 'Seinfeld' and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind,' Dies at 86

Gene Dynarski, a character actor who appeared in Steven Spielberg's Duel and Close Encounters of the Third Kind and played Izzy Mandelbaum Jr., the son of Lloyd Bridges' character, on Seinfeld, has died. He was 86.

Dynarski died Feb. 27 in a rehabilitation center in Studio City, playwright Ernest Kearney announced.

The Brooklyn native also worked twice on the original Star Trek, as the miner Ben Childress on the 1966 episode "Mudd's Women" and as Krodak, who represents a city up for Federation membership, on the 1969 installment "The Mark of Gideon."

Dynarski was seen as Benedict, one of Egghead's (Vincent Price) henchmen, on Batman in 1966, and on a 2000 episode of The X-Files, his character fell victim to a monstrous bat creature.

His résumé also included Earthquake (1974), Airport 1975 and All the President's Men (1976) and Hill Street Blues, The A-Team, Little House on the Prairie, Starsky and Hutch, Kung Fu, Kojak, Bonanza and The Monkees, among other TV series.

In 1979, he opened The Gene Dynarski Theatre near Sunset Boulevard and Western Avenue in Los Angeles, with Ed Harris starring in Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth as its first production. Elisabeth Shue and Tom Hanks were among others who performed there before it shuttered in the mid-1990s.

Born on Sept. 13, 1933, Dynarski worked as a "pin monkey" at a bowling alley, served in the U.S. Navy and, after coming to L.A., began getting acting jobs through noted casting director Lynn Stalmaster. In 1965, he made his onscreen debut on an episode of the ABC medical drama Ben Casey.

In the 1971 telefilm Duel, Dynarski was a trucker confronted in a roadside café by Dennis Weaver, who thinks he's the murderous big-rig driver on his tail, and in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), he played the supervisor who sends out Richard Dreyfuss to investigate those mysterious blackouts.

On the 1997 Seinfeld episode "The English Patient," Dynarski's character and his equally competitive dad and grandfather (Earl Schuman) all throw out their backs, then blame Jerry for it. (He and Bridges returned for another episode the following season.)

Dynarski also portrayed Josef Stalin in the 1996 videogame Command & Conquer: Red Alert and won a Los Angeles Drama Critics' Award for his performance in Among the Vipers, produced by Kearney at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble.

Survivors include his two daughters.

Irrfan Khan, 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'Life of Pi' Star, Dead at 53

Irrfan Khan -- Bollywood icon and star of films like "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Life of Pi" -- has died after battling cancer.

The Indian actor died Wednesday in a Mumbai hospital after being admitted to the ICU for a colon infection earlier this week.

His rep says ... "Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him."

Khan revealed in March 2018 that he had been diagnosed with a rare neuroendocrine tumor, an abnormal growth that begins in the body's specialized neuroendocrine cells. We're told he'd been getting chemotherapy in London and traveling back and forth to India in recent months.

Khan is one of India's most famous and beloved actors, and has more than 150 Bollywood and Hollywood credits to his name.

He attended the National School of Drama in New Delhi and started his acting career soon after, playing mainly supporting roles for more than a decade. He had his big break in early 2000s, though ... racking up awards for his starring role in the 2003 film, "Haasil."

Irrfan went on to star in other award-winning films such as "Like In A….Metro" before busting onto the international scene in 2008 when he appeared in the Oscar hit, "Slumdog Millionaire."

He then landed a starring role in the acclaimed "Life of Pi," and would go on to appear in movies like "The Amazing Spider-Man," "Jurassic World" and "Inferno."

Sadly, the actor's mother also died last week, but he was unable to attend her funeral due to the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns.

Priyanka Chopra is one of many Bollywood stars to post a tribute to Khan.

Irrfan is survived by his wife and 2 children.

He was 53.

RIP

Don Shula Dead At 90, Legendary NFL Coach 'Passed Away Peacefully'

Don Shula -- the NFL coaching legend who famously led the Miami Dolphins to a perfect season in 1972 -- has died at 90 years old.

"[Shula] passed away peacefully at his home this morning," the Dolphins said in a statement.

A cause of death was not immediately known.

"Don Shula was the patriarch of the Miami Dolphins for 50 years," the team said.

"He brought the winning edge to our franchise and put the Dolphins and the city of Miami in the national sports scene."

"Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Mary Anne along with his children Dave, Donna, Sharon, Anne and Mike."

Shula is one of football's all-time greats ... after a playing career as a defensive back in the NFL in the 1950s -- he went on to become a Hall of Fame coach.

Shula, the head man in Baltimore from 1963 to 1969 and then in Miami from 1970 to 1995, owns the record for most wins by an NFL coach EVER ... piling up 347 in his 33-year career.

Shula also won two Super Bowls as the coach of the 'Fins ... and is still the only man to ever coach an undefeated NFL team.

Don was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

RIP

Shula had a major impact on a ton of famous people. Some of them are posting tributes on social media including:

NFL commish Roger Goodell -- "Don Shula will always be remembered as one of the greatest coaches and contributors in the history of our game. He made an extraordinarily positive impact on so many lives."

"His iconic legacy will endure through his family and continue to inspire generations to come."

The Cleveland Browns -- who drafted Shula in 1951 -- shared the team's condolences ... saying, "We're proud of the fact that his football foundation was built in Ohio, starting at Harvey High School in Painesville, playing collegiately at John Carroll and then being drafted by the Browns."

"Coach Shula's contribution to our game are unmatched. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Shula Family."

Magic Johnson -- "RIP NFL Hall of Fame Coach and 2X Super Bowl champion Don Shula! My prayers go out to his family."

Andrea Kremer -- "My deepest condolences on the passing of Don Shula ... As a professional I worked w/ him & got to know him well, even naming my dog Zonk, just like he did. RIP Coach."

Gov. Ron DeSantis -- "Coach Don Shula leaves behind an incomparable legacy as the NFL’s winningest coach and as the one who put Miami sports on the map."

Bill Cowher -- "We lost one of the most iconic men in the history of NFL coaching in Don Shula. His leadership and wisdom helped to guide me and many others who have made a life in coaching football. Thank you Coach Shula. May your spirit and legacy live on forever."

Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy Dead at 75 After Catching COVID-19

Roy Horn, one half of the famous Siegfried & Roy magic and entertainment act in Las Vegas, is dead after being infected with the coronavirus ... TMZ has learned.

We just got a statement from Siegfried, who told us, "Today, the world has lost one of the greats of magic, but I have lost my best friend. From the moment we met, I knew Roy and I, together, would change the world. There could be no Siegfried without Roy, and no Roy without Siegfried."

Siegfried goes on ... "Roy was a fighter his whole life, including during these final days. I give my heartfelt appreciation to the team of doctors, nurses and staff at Mountain View Hospital who worked heroically against this insidious virus that ultimately took Roy's life."

Roy died Friday, a little more than a week after testing positive for COVID-19.

Horn and Siegfried Fischbacher were a staple in Sin City for more than a decade, and they were well known for their daring performances with tigers and big cats.

Roy was famously mauled by a 380-pound white tiger, Mantecore, way back in 2003 during a performance at the Mirage Las Vegas. The tiger bit Roy by the neck during the act and dragged him offstage.

Siegfried and Roy claimed then and always maintained it was NOT an attack ... instead, they say Roy was having a ministroke and the tiger actually saved his life by dragging him offstage.

The incident left Roy partially paralyzed, and it basically ended Siegfried and Roy's act as we knew it ... though they later performed live with a tiger once again in 2019 for ABC's '20/20.'

Roy was 75.

RIP

R&B Singer Betty Wright Dead at 66

Betty Wright, a supremely talented R&B singer who popularized the phrase, "No pain, no gain," has died.

Wright's cause of death was not announced when her niece confirmed the passing. Something was clearly wrong though because 2 days ago, Chaka Khan made a plea ... "Calling all my #PrayWarriors. My beloved sister, Betty Wright @MsBettyWright, is now in need of all your prayers."

Wright, whom some in the music industry called one of the most underrated singers of her time, was recently honored on TV One's, "Unsung."

Betty recorded so many songs, including her 1971 hit, "Clean Up Woman. She was only 18 when the song was released, and it turned out to be her biggest song ever. Other hits included "Let Me Be Your Lovermaker," "Shoorah Shoorah," "Tonight is the Night," and "Where is the Love."

Betty made a bold move in the '80s, launching her own independent label ... it had not been done before by a female artist. That's when she recorded "No Pain (No Gain)." Ever heard that phrase? Later she recorded "Mother Wit," and it went gold -- the first time an African-American female singer went gold on her own record label.

Wright became an inspiration to so many singers, including Mary J. Blige, The Roots and Joss Stone. Wright performed with Joss on her song, "The Art of Love and War."

In 2005, her 21-year-old son, Patrick, was shot and killed. She had 4 other children.

Betty was 66.

RIP

Comedian Jerry Stiller Dies at 92

The world woke up to some incredibly sad news on Monday morning, as we learned that beloved comedian and actor Jerry Stiller had passed away overnight. Stiller had a long career in comedy both on the stage and on the screen, and he passed away this weekend at the age of 92 years old. The news of Stiller's passing came from his son, actor and filmmaker Ben Stiller, who posted a loving tribute to his late father on Twitter.

"I'm sad to say that my father, Jerry Stiller, passed away from natural causes," Stiller wrote in the tweet. "He was a great dad and grandfather, and the most dedicated husband to Anne for about 62 years. He will be greatly missed. Love you Dad."

Stiller had a long and illustrious career of comedy that spanned decades. He first rose to prominence in the 1960s, performing routines alongside his wife, Anne Meara. In addition to their work in front of live crowds around the country, Stiller and Meara also performed several times on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Over the years, Stiller appeared on several TV shows and in quite a few feature films, including Hairspray, Law & Order, Heavyweights, and The Love Boat. However, his most popular on-screen role came in 1993, when he first appeared on Seinfeld. Stiller played Frank Costanza, father of Jason Alexander's George Costanza, for a total of 26 episodes of the show's run. He was even nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on the series in 1997.

Stiller went on to take a starring role in sitcom series The King of Queens, alongside Kevin James and Leah Remini. He played Arthur Spooner, the father of Remini's character, who lived in the basement of the couple's home in New York City.

Stiller also got the chance to work alongside his son, appearing in both Zoolander movies as Derek Zoolander's manager, Maury. The comedian's last on-screen role was actually in Zoolander 2, back in 2016.

In 2007, Stiller and Meara were given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Jorge Santana, Musician and Brother of Carlos Santana, Dies at 68

Jorge Santana, a musician and the youngest brother of guitarist Carlos Santana, died of natural causes on Thursday. He was 68.

Carlos Santana announced the death of his brother on his Facebook page on Friday.

“We take time to celebrate the magnificent spirit of our beloved brother Jorge,” Carlos wrote. “He transitioned unto the realm of light that cast no shadow. The eyes of my heart clearly see him right in between our glorious and magnificent mother Josefina and our father Jose.”

Born in Jalisco, Mexico, Santana was the youngest of three brothers and started playing the guitar after Carlos did. When he was 14, Santana began playing the guitar in San Francisco where he joined a high school band called The Malibus in the 1960s. The band later changed its name to Malo, Spanish for “bad.” The new name came from the band’s frontman’s mother who would tell them, “todos ustedes son malos,” meaning “all of you are bad.”

The band went on to sign with Warner Brothers and in 1972, became known for their top 20 hit for the song “Suavecito.” The group would later perform on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand” that same year.

Malo produced three more albums before the band broke up. Santana had also been playing with the New York-based salsa collective Fania All-Stars and got to play at the Yankee Stadium in 1973. Five years later, he released two solo albums, “Jorge Santana” and “It’s All About Love.”

Santana also went on to work with Carlos and his management company as a director of artist relations. In 1993, Santana toured with his famous brother, and the following year they recorded an album, “Santana Brothers,” with their cousin, Carlos Hernandez.

Fred Willard, Comedic Actor, Dies at 86

Fred Willard, known for his delightful roles in projects like Everybody Loves Raymond, Best In Show, Anchorman, and more has passed away at the age of 86. His death was confirmed by his agent Michael Eisenstadt, though no details regarding his death were released (via THR). Willard's daughter also shared the news on Twitter, and said her father passed away "very peacefully." She then added "He kept moving, working and making us happy until the very end. We loved him so very much! We will miss him forever," (via PopCulture). Willard's agent, Glenn Schwartz, also told Rolling Stone that the actor died from natural causes. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

Willard has been a fan favorite actor for quite some time thanks to delightful characters in everything from Wizards of Waverly Place to Raymond to Disney's WALL-E, and he was also part of the upcoming Netflix series Space Force, which releases later this year.

Willard's vast resume includes memorable roles in both film and television, though it's hard not to immediately think of his brilliant work in the Christopher Guest series of Mockumentaries, which included films like A Mighty Wind, Best In Show, and For Your Consideration. He would also grace the screen in shows like Modern Family, and would lend his voice to things like Scooby-Doo, G.I. Joe: Renegades, Transformers, WALL-E, Kim Possible, and more.

He would reprise his role as Hank MacDougall on Everybody Loves Raymond 14 times, and most recently appeared as Fred Naird in Netflix's Space Force.

Our thoughts are with Willard's family and friends at this time.

Ray Manzarek, Doors Keyboardist, Dead at 74

Doors co-founder and keyboardist Ray Manzarek died today in Rosenheim, Germany, after a long battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74.

“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today,” Doors guitarist Robby Krieger said in a statement.  “I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.”

Manzarek grew up in Chicago, then moved to Los Angeles in 1962 to study film at UCLA. It was there he first met Doors singer Jim Morrison, though they didn’t talk about forming a band until they bumped into each other on a beach in Venice, California, in the summer of 1965 and Morrison told Manzarek that he had been working on some music. “And there it was!” Manzarek wrote in his 1998 biography, Light My Fire. “It dropped quite simply, quite innocently from his lips, but it changed our collective destinies.”

They quickly teamed up with drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger and began playing gigs around Los Angeles. About a year later, the Doors recorded their debut album for Elektra Records. “We knew once people heard us, we’d be unstoppable,” Manzarek wrote in his memoir. “We knew what the people wanted: the same thing the Doors wanted. Freedom.”

The Doors didn’t have a bassist, so Manzarek often played the bass parts on his Fender Rhodes piano. He also played a Vox Continental organ, which can be heard on the famous intro to “Light My Fire” and numerous other Doors classics. The group shared credit on most songs and split all profits evenly.

The group carried on for two more albums after Jim Morrison died in July of 1971, but they split in 1973. Manzarek remained extremely busy, producing albums for X and playing with Iggy Pop, Echo and the Bunnymen and others. In 2002, he began touring as the Doors of the 21st Century with Krieger and Cult frontman Ian Astbury. Doors drummer John Densmore filed a lawsuit over the use of the name and it lead to a protracted legal battle.

“Morrison required all three of us diving into his lyrics and creating music that would swirl around him,” Manzarek told Rolling Stone in 2006. “Without Jim, everybody started shooting off in different directions. . . The Doors was the perfect mixture of four guys, four egos that balanced each other. There were never any problems with ‘You wrote this’ or ‘I wrote that.’ But [after Jim died] the whole dynamic was screwed up, because the fourth guy wasn’t there.”

Lord of the Rings Star Ian Holm Dies at 88

It's a sad day throughout the world and in Middle Earth, as beloved actor Ian Holm has died. A veteran of the screen, Holm took on seemingly countless roles over the years, but was best known for his portrayal of Bilbo Baggins in the Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also starred in Alien alongside Sigourney Weaver, playing the android known as Ash. Holm died peacefully on Friday morning at the age of 88.

Holm's agent released a statement to the Guardian on Friday morning, confirming that the actor had indeed passed. Holm died surrounded by loved ones, and his death was due to an illness related to Parkinson's.

"It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88. He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer," said Holm's agent. "Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely."

Holm was born in Essex in 1931 and began acting at an early age. His work in theater eventually led to Holm landing a few parts on television. His first on-screen role came in the ITV Play of the Week program in 1957. Holm worked steadily throughout the '60s and '70s, but it wasn't until 1978 that he really became the star he's known to be today. The actor was cast as a malfunctioning android named Ash in Ridley Scott's sci-fi thriller, Alien.

Three years after Alien was released, Holm received heaps of critical acclaim for his role as coach Sam Mussabini in Chariots of Fire. Holm won a BAFTA for the role and was ultimately nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

Over the years, Holm appeared in several other popular films, such as Time Bandits, Brazil, Henry V, Hamlet, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, The Fifth Element, and The Sweet Hereafter. Holm earned a whole new generation of fans for his portrayal of Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, a role that he reprised briefly in two of the three Hobbit films. Holm also voiced the villainous Skinner in Pixar's Ratatouille.

Holm was named a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1989, and in 1998 he was knighted for his services to drama.

He is survived by his wife, artist Sophie de Stempel, whom he married in 2003, and 5 children.

Ian was 88.

Director Joel Schumacher Dies, Aged 80

A man known for stylish visuals and a subversive streak of humour in his early films, who switched careers from costume design to directing, has died. Joel Schumacher was 80.

Born in 1939 in New York, he grew up in Long Island City and his father died when Schumacher was four. With his mother working all hours to support the family, the young Schumacher found himself largely running on the streets taking care of himself, working creatively by making puppet shows and diving into movies and comic books – Batman in particular, which would play into his future career. He started drinking at age nine, and got into both drugs and sex at an early age, something he has been up front about in the past. Leaving home at 16, he was swept up in a whirlwind of party living while working in department stores to make ends meet.

After attending two art and design schools, Schumacher worked as a fashion designer, managed trendy boutique Paraphernalia and landed a job dreaming up packaging for Revlon. In 1971, he moved to Los Angeles and got his first film gig, designing costumes for Play It As It Lays and other movies, including Woody Allen's Sleeper. He built up contacts and started writing screenplays for movies such as 1976's Car Wash and 1978 musical The Wiz.

Schumacher got his first shot at directing via 1981's The Incredible Shrinking Woman, which led to other jobs, including DC Cab, and his first big hit, St. Elmo's Fire, which established the director's reputation as a talent spotter. The Lost Boys followed, along with Flatliners, Dying Young and Falling Down. He had success with legal dramas, including The Client and Time To Kill, which in turn led to Batman Forever. Taking over the Bat-reins from Tim Burton, Schumacher was criticised for pushing the franchise in a camp direction, though Forever proved to be a hit. Follow-up Batman And Robin was less successful and faced even stronger criticism.

Looking to switch up his career and style, Schumacher reverted to smaller scale with films including 8MM, Flawless, Phone Booth and Tigerland. He delivered a bigger spectacle in Phantom Of The Opera, which scored little love but was nominated for Oscars. His last film as a director was 2011's Trespass. And on the small screen, he tackled episodes of House Of Cards.

"I'm very lucky to be here," he told The Age in 2004. "I have a career beyond my wildest dreams. I've wanted to make movies since I was seven. I have my health, I conquered drugs and alcohol.… I've survived an awful lot." Schumacher was diagnosed with cancer last year and died peacefully today.

98 years...

Carl Reiner ... simply the best...we lost a true legend. A GOAT. I will be listening to a lot of his records today and a movie tonight. Anything he did I loved. For those too young that’s him on the right hugging his longtime collaborator Mel Brooks ..

Legendary '20/20' Broadcaster Hugh Downs Dead at 99

Hugh Downs -- a broadcasting legend with 60 years experience on "Today," "20/20" and 'The Tonight Show' -- has died.

Hugh died Wednesday at his home in Scottsdale, AZ ... according to his family, who released a statement Friday, saying his passing is not related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hugh was one of TV's most familiar faces during his incredibly long and successful run as a broadcaster ... he co-anchored NBC's "Today" show from 1962 to 1971 and is most remembered for his 21 years as Barbara Walters' co-host on ABC's "20/20."

Downs was also known for his signature sign-off during his time at "20/20" ... ending the nightly program with this gem, "We're in touch, so you be in touch."

Hugh was on the tube for so long, at one point he held the record for most hours spent in front of a TV camera with a whopping 15,188 ... a long-standing record eventually topped by Regis Philbin.

While Hugh officially retired from "20/20" way back in 1999, he lent his smooth voice to a number of TV specials and documentary films during the 2000s.

Hugh was born in Akron, Ohio and he got his broadcasting start on radio in Detroit and Chicago before moving to TV in 1949 as an announcer on a classic children's puppet show called, "Kukla, Fran and Ollie."

Downs also served as the announcer for one of the earliest versions of NBC's "Tonight Show," working alongside Jack Paar in the late 1950s and early '60s.

He even launched one of the most popular daytime shows in the 1960s, "Concentration," a memory-matching game he hosted for over a decade.

Downs worked for PBS too, for much of the 1990s he was the host of the network's "Live From Lincoln Center" broadcasts.

Hugh was 99.

RIP

Kelly Preston Dies, Aged 57

Kelly Preston, who enjoyed a successful career in a variety of movies, has died. She was 57.

Preston was born Kelly Kamalelehua Smith on October 13, 1962, in Honolulu, Hawaii, and studied acting at the University of Southern California. She launched her career in 1985 with her first major movie role in Mischief after several minor roles in television shows, including For Love and Honour.

Best known for movies such as Jerry Maguire, For Love Of The Game, Sky High, Nothing To Lose, SpaceCamp, and Twins. She brought a sense of comedy timing and real grace to her performances.

Working on 1987's The Experts, she met fellow actor John Travolta, and the two married in 1991. Travolta paid tribute to his wife on Instagram.

Preston is survived by Travolta, and their children, daughter Ella, 20, and 9-year-old son Benjamin. Elder son Jett died at the age of 16 in 2009.

"Choosing to keep her fight private, she had been undergoing medical treatment for some time, supported by her closest family and friends," a family representative told People. "She was a bright, beautiful and loving soul who cared deeply about others and who brought life to everything she touched. Her family asks for your understanding of their need for privacy at this time."
