Scooby-Doo Co-Creator Joe Ruby Dead at 87

American animation icon Joe Ruby, the co-creator of the classic cartoon series Scooby-Doo has passed away. According to Variety Ruby died at his home in Westlake Village, California home from natural causes. Ruby was 87. In addition to working with his production partner Ken Spears to create Scooby-Doo the pair also developed two other classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons in both Dynomutt, Dog Wonder and Jabberjaw. Ruby's extensive career also included work on the original Space Ghost series plus The Herculoids, Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, and even some live-action shows like the sitcom Punky Brewster.

Together with Spears, the pair brought a new class of cartoons to Hanna-Barbera Productions having been part of the team at the company since the late 1950s. "I did some magazine cartooning years before, but never pursued (working as a writer) much," Ruby said in an interview with Scooby-Doo fan site Scooby Addicts. |It was just a 'freak' opportunity that came up at Hanna-Barbera in 1959. They desperately needed people to write the short openings, closings and 30 second bridges for the Huck Hound and Yogi Bear Shows, and both Ken and I started writing them on the side while we worked our regular jobs in the editorial department."

Some of Ruby's other works that fans might know and love was the short-lived Planet of the Apes TV series and even the hugely popular 1980s version of Alvin & the Chipmunks. He also had a hand in bringing several live-action figures and franchises into the medium of animation including Mister T, Police Academy: The Animated Series, and even the cartoon version of Rambo.

Far and away though his most popular work was the Scooby-Doo franchise which they co-created in 1969. Spears and Ruby wrote the first five episodes of the series together and had a hand in crafting the rest of the original run. The pair returned to the franchise in both 1976 for The Scooby-Doo Show and in the 1980s for Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo.

"We kicked around a lot of names, and just decided which ones seemed to fit their personalities best," Ruby said in the same interview. "There wasn't a story behind Shaggy, only that 'Shaggy' came first, then we came up with his formal name (Norville)."

Ruby received a Special Thanks in the credits for this year's CG animated Scoob! along with Spears, a film that features not only the characters they co-created from Scooby-Doo but also Blue Falcon & Dynomutt but Captain Caveman.

Caesar Cordova, Scarface Actor, Dies At 84

Character actor Caesar Cordova, best known for appearing in gangster films with Al Pacino, has passed away. Variety reports that Cordova died of natural causes on Wednesday in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Cordova is survived by his wife Gladys Gomez; their four children Panchito Gomez, Luis Gomez, Ana Sanchez Gomez and Elena Gomez Martinez, and three children from a previous marriage Damarys Cordova, Abigail Cordova and Jesse Cordova. Born in 1936 in Puerto Rico, Cordova was 84 at the time of his passing. May he rest in peace and our condolences to his family.

Though Cordova started his acting career on television, he's probably best known for appearing in movies like Carlito's Way, where he played the barber, and Scarface, where he played a taco stand cook; both opposite Al Pacino and both directed by filmmaker Brian De Palma. Some of his other feature film roles include appearances in Where the Buffalo Roam with Bill Murray, Nighthawks opposite Sylvester Stallone and Billy Dee Williams, Cutter's Way with Jeff Bridges, and Shark’s Treasure.

Cordova also dabbled in TV throughout his career as well, making appearances on episodes of Kojak, The A-Team, and Cagney & Lacey. He also appeared on Broadway in the show “Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?," another collaboration with Al Pacino.

The previously mentioned son of Cordova, Panchito Gómez, followed his father into the world of acting. In the early 70s he encouraged Gómez to pursue acting as a young boy, auditioning for a part in the second season of Sesame Street for The Children's Television Workshop. Gómez auditioned opposite Raúl Juliá and would go on to become the first child actor named in the credits of the series.

Cordova's two biggest credits, De Palma's Scarface and Carlito's Way, arrived ten years apart. Scarface, a remake of the 1932 film of the same name, was met with negative critical reception upon release but has become a cult film in the decades since. Carlito's Way, despite a warmer reception upon release, has also developed a following since its release with both films now bona fide classics in the pantheon of Hollywood.

Leslie Hamilton Freas, Terminator Star Linda Hamilton's Twin Sister and Stunt Double, Dies at 63

Leslie Hamilton Freas, the identical twin sister of Terminator star Linda Hamilton, has died at the age of 63. Freas appeared in 1991's Terminator 2: Judgement Day as a stunt double for Hamilton as well as portrayed the cyborg Sarah Connor when both the real Sarah (played by Hamilton) and the T-1000 Terminator that had shifted to look like Sarah were in the same shot. Freas, who was born on September 26, 1956 in Salisbury Maryland, died on Saturday, August 23rd and a cause of death has not been revealed.

According to an obituary, outside of her role working with Hamilton in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Freas worked as an ER nurse, later transitioning to work as a hospice nurse later in her career. She's described as "the consummate caretaker" who was devoted to not just her children but the lives of others. She's also noted as being an avid fisherwoman.

In addition to the scene in which she played the T-1000 version of Sarah, Freas also appeared additional scenes in the film, most notably the haunting nuclear apocalypse nightmare scene in which Freas -- who is credited as Leslie Hamilton Gearren in the film -- plays the happy Sarah Connor playing on the playground with a young John Connor before the nuclear blast while the real Sarah Connor (Hamilton) watches in horror (via MovieWeb). Freas also appeared in a deleted scene in which Sarah and John reset the T-800's (Arnold Schwarzenegger) CPU. The scene saw Freas stand by Schwarzenegger while Hamilton is actually seen in a "mirror" illusion, an example of the film pulling off some interesting visual tricks without the use of CGI. Terminator 2 was Freas sole film credit.

Hamilton spoke about how the film incorporated Freas, particularly in the T-1000 scene, in a 2010 interview

"They were going to use a process shot for the double, but they flew Leslie in and were delighted," Hamilton said.

Per Freas obituary, she is survived by her children, Ashley, Adam, and Kendall, her sisters Laura Hamilton and Linda Hamilton, brother Ford Hamilton, a stepbrother Jeffrey Payne, and grandchildren Luna Bo and Ollie.

'I Like to Move It' DJ, Erick Morillo, Dead at 49

DJ Erick Morillo -- best known for his 1993 hit, "I Like to Move It" -- has died ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us the DJ and music producer's body was found this morning in Miami Beach ... the circumstances surrounding his death are currently unclear.

Best known for his work in international house music, Morillo produced his biggest hit in the '90s with the electro-dance track "I Like to Move It" ... which he put out under the stage name Reel 2 Real.

He's a 3-time winner of the DJ Awards' Best House DJ and a 3-time winner of Best International DJ ... including his most recent win in 2009.

Morillo's death comes a few weeks after he was arrested in Miami on sexual battery charges. The alleged victim claims she and Morillo went to his place after they were both DJing. She alleges she resisted his sexual advances, and then went to sleep at his place, but woke up nude ... with Morillo standing next to her, also nude.

He'd turned himself in on August 6.

Morillo was 49.

Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver dies at age 75

Tom Seaver, arguably the greatest New York Mets player ever, died early Monday at age 75.

Seaver died in his sleep of complications of Lewy body dementia and COVID-19, according to a release from the Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday night.

Seaver, nicknamed "The Franchise," won three Cy Young Awards. A former National League Rookie of the Year, Seaver went to the All-Star Game 12 times in his 20-year career. He won the NL ERA title three times.

In 1969, he achieved the greatest team accomplishment as he won a World Series with the Mets.

“We are heartbroken to share that our beloved husband and father has passed away,” said his wife Nancy Seaver and daughters Sarah and Anne. “We send our love out to his fans, as we mourn his loss with you.”

Seaver, who also played for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox, finished his career with a 2.86 ERA and 311 victories. He struck out 3,640 batters.

In 1988, the Mets retired Seaver's No. 41 during a ceremony at Shea Stadium. He was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1992 after appearing on 98.8 percent of ballots submitted by members in the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

In a statement, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said: “I am deeply saddened by the death of Tom Seaver, one of the greatest pitchers of all-time.  Tom was a gentleman who represented the best of our National Pastime.  He was synonymous with the New York Mets and their unforgettable 1969 season.  After their improbable World Series Championship, Tom became a household name to baseball fans – a responsibility he carried out with distinction throughout his life. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I extend my condolences to Tom’s family, his admirers throughout our game, Mets fans, and the many people he touched.”

Because of dementia, Seaver had not lived a public life since March 2019. Per the New York Daily News, Seaver died at his home in California.

Record-Holding Motorcycle Racer Dead At 69 After 252-MPH Crash

Tragic news in the motorcycle racing world ... veteran rider Ralph Hudson died Sunday from injuries he suffered after crashing his bike at 252 MPH.

The 69-year-old was hurt on Aug. 14 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah ... where he was attempting to break a speed record.

Officials said at the time he wiped out and was rushed to the hospital in serious condition ... but stabilized to the point where his family was hopeful he could pull through.

Sadly, Hudson's family and friends said in a statement this week the racer succumbed to injuries ... announcing he passed away Sunday night surrounded by his son and best friends.

"We sincerely thank everyone for their kind words, prayers and support during this very difficult time," the statement read. "Ralph would want everyone to stay strong and keep going fast."

Hudson was known as one of the best in the motorcycle racing community ... he reportedly held multiple speed records and even once topped 300 MPH on his bike.

In fact, the vice president of the Southern California Timing Association, Pat McDowell, called Hudson "one of the legends of our sport" to the Deseret News.

"A great competitor and innovator," McDowell added ... "I’m going to miss him.”
