It's called an addiction to gambling. What kind of person bets on someone to die?
Start placing some odds on your own families and maybe I'll bite. Start with the kids. I bet they can get the biggest return. Heartless bastards.

Ken Spears, the Co-Creator of Scooby-Doo, Dies at 82

Today, the animation fandom is taking time to mourn the loss of a great talent. A report from Variety confirms Ken Spears has passed away. The man was best-known for helping creator Scooby-Doo with co-creator Joe Ruby. Spears was 82 years old.

A statement was shared by Spears' family in the wake of his death. His son, Kevin Spears, says his father passed from complications stemming from Lewy body dementia.

“Ken will forever be remembered for his wit, his story-telling, his loyalty to family, and his strong work ethic,” Kevin Spears said about his father. “Ken has not only made a lasting impression on his family, but he has touched the lives of many as co-creator of Scooby-Doo. Ken has been a role model for us throughout his life and he will continue to live on in our hearts.”

Spears began his journey back in March 1938 where he grew up in Los Angeles, California. He was close friends with son of William Hanna, and he was hired at Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1959 where he worked in sound editing. It was there Spears met Ruby, and the two established a partnership writing scripts right off the bat.

The two went on to create iconic series like Scooby-Doo, Dog Wonder, Jabberjaw, and Dynomutt. They went on to establish their own studio in 1977 called Ruby-Spears Productions. The pair producers several series such as Superman, Mister T, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and more. Spears and Ruby would continue their partnership until retirement called decades later. Earlier this August, reports were shared that Ruby had passed away, and Spears has followed just months later.

Our thoughts are with Spears' loved ones at this time. May he rest in peace.

Dragon Ball, Transformers Star Kirby Morrow Dies at 47

The world of anime and television has lost a giant as 47 year old actor Kirby Morrow has passed. Best known for his roles as Goku in Dragon Ball Z, Miroku in Inuyasha, and Cyclops in X-Men Evolution, Kirby Morrow also had a starring role in the live action television series of Stargate Atlantis, proving his versatility as an actor when it came to animated and live action performances. With the sheer number of performances under his belt, the world has definitely lost a valuable voice actor with Morrow's passing.

Morrow was born in 1973 in Jasper, Alberta, studying acting at the Mount Royal University in Calgary. His first major voice role came with the role of Michaleangelo in the live action series of Ninja Turtles: Next Mutation, and he followed this up with countless voice acting roles that proved his range when it came to voicing both heroes and villains. Morrow was most likely best known for his portrayal of Miroku in the original English Dub of Inuyasha, and had returned to voice him in the sequel series of Yashahime: Princess Half Demon. In the world of television, he was known most for his role as Captain Dave Kleinman in the popular Stargate series.

Twitter Outlet Voice Artist's Spotlight shared the devastating news that Morrow had passed, honoring his long career in acting when it came to the likes of Stargate, Transformers, and countless animated series in which he lent his vocal talents in bringing to life any number of characters:

In the past few years, Morrow had received roles in a number of pop culture television series such as CW's The Flash, Van Helsing, FX's Legion, and the Good Doctor to name a few. While we aren't sure how this will affect Yashahime: Princess Half Demon moving forward, we know that fans will definitely miss Morrow's legendary performance as Miroku, the priest who becomes one of the strongest allies to both the half demon Inuyasha and the arrow slinging girl from the modern era in Kagome.

Our thoughts are with Kirby's loved ones during this difficult time.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Co-Creator Patrick Quinn Dead at 37

Patrick Quinn -- who co-created the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge -- has died.

Quinn passed away Sunday after a 7-year-long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis -- also known as Lou Gehrig's disease -- this according to his official Facebook page.

A remembrance post read, "It is with great sadness that we must share the passing of Patrick early this morning.  He was a blessing to us all in so many ways.  We will always remember him for his inspiration and courage in his tireless fight against ALS."

Pat's involvement with the IBC is tied to his pal, Peter Frates, who was widely seen as the face/inspiration behind the challenge and why it went viral. Had it not been for PQ catching wind of a similar challenge happening earlier in 2014 and then linking it directly to ALS while spreading the word ... Frates might've never blown up.

Together, the two of them formally affiliated the challenge with ALS -- which took off all over the world and went on to raise significant awareness about the disease ... not to mention money. As of late, the Ice Bucket Challenge has helped raise upwards of $250 million to help study and, hopefully, eradicate the ailment.

As we reported, Frates -- who also had ALS -- died quite young as well at the age of 34 just last year. His Fenway Park video was the spark plug that made everyone jump on the challenge in August 2014 -- which also spurred folks to challenge other people as a result.

Celebs have also taken up the challenge over the years -- folks like David Spade, Charlie Sheen, Kim K, Ellen and others. Then-President Barack Obama rejected the challenge ... but opted to donate instead, which is probably worth more anyway.

As for Quinn, he was only 37 years old.

RIP

David Dinkins, New York City's first African-American mayor, dies at 93

David Dinkins, New York City's first and only African-American mayor, died Monday. He was 93.

New York City Police Department officers were called to the former mayor's home Monday where it is believed he died of natural causes, the department confirmed to USA TODAY.

Dinkins broke barriers with his 1989 mayoral run, defeating three-term incumbent Ed Koch in the Democratic primary and Republican Rudy Giuliani in the general election by just 47,000 votes, the narrowest electoral margin in New York City history. Giuliani offered his condolences on Twitter, saying Dinkins "gave a great deal of his life in service to our great City. That service is respected and honored by all."

Mayor Bill de Blasio praised Dinkins on Hot 97's ERBO Tuesday morning for creating afterschool programs, making the city safer and calling out "racism that pervaded the city."

"He just showed us what it meant to serve other people and to do it with just tremendous humanity," de Blasio said. "If not for David Dinkins, that division, that pain would have festered even more, and the city could not have moved forward."

Several prominent New Yorkers, including attorney general Letitia James, mayoral candidate Dianne Morales, and state senator Jamaal T. Bailey mourned Dinkins early Tuesday.

"For decades, Mayor Dinkins lead with compassion and an unparalleled commitment to our communities," James said in a statement. "New York will mourn Mayor Dinkins and continue to be moved by his towering legacy.”

Born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1927, Dinkins graduated from Howard University and earned a law degree from Brooklyn Law School. Also a veteran, he served in the Marines in Korea before marrying Joyce Burrows, daughter of a Harlem politician who died last month.

He briefly practiced law before being elected a Harlem state Assemblyman and going on to serve as President of the Board of Elections, City Clerk and Manhattan Borough President. He spent 14 years of his career working in the city's Municipal Building which was named after him in 2015.

Dinkin's mayoral in came on the heels of two racially charged cases under the previous administration: the rape of a white jogger in Central Park that led to the arrest of five Black and brown teenagers and the racially-motivated murder Yusef Hawkins, a Black teenager.

During his inauguration speech he emphasized the need for equality and vowed to be "mayor of all the people of New York."

"We are all foot soldiers on the march to freedom," he declared.

Dinkins accomplishments during his tenure as mayor include:

He spoke out strongly against apartheid and had the city divest $500 million worth of pension fund stock invested in companies that did business in South Africa. Newly freed Nelson Mandela made New York City his first stop in the U.S. in 1990.
He raised taxes to hire thousands of police officers.
He spent billions of dollars revitalizing neglected housing.
His administration got the Walt Disney Corp. to invest in the cleanup of then-seedy Times Square.
He signed an agreement with the United States Tennis Association in 1993 that gave the organization a 99-year lease on city land in Queens in return for building a tennis complex, guaranteeing the U.S. Open would remain in New York City for decades.

But Dinkins inherited a city plagued by the AIDS epidemic, guns, crack cocaine, soaring unemployment and rampant homelessness killed. New York City faced a $1.8 billion budget deficit which grew to $2.2 billion by the time he left office.

He also faced pointed criticism over his handling of a boycott by Korean grocers in Brooklyn, civil unrest in Washington Heights and a race riot in Crown Heights that saw nearly 200 people injured and which some historians believe lead to his defeat.

Giuliani defeated Dinkins in his bid for reelection in 1993. Dinkins accepted a share of the blame for the 1991 riots but blamed his loss on "racism, pure and simple" in his 2013 memoir.

After leaving office, Dinkins became a professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He still remained active in New York City politics and hosted a weekly radio show, according to his city biography.

Dinkins is survived by his son, David Jr.; and daughter, Donna and two grandchildren.

Diego Maradona Dead at 60

Diego Maradona -- widely considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time -- has died at his home in Argentina, according to his reps.

He was 60.

Maradona, who was still recovering after emergency brain surgery earlier this month, reportedly suffered a heart attack at his home Wednesday morning and was not able to pull through ... according to Argentinian news outlet Clarin.

His death was confirmed by Maradona's longtime lawyer and agent Matias Morla.

Back in the day, Maradona was considered one of the best soccer players in the world -- leading Argentina to a World Cup in 1986.

In fact, his "Hand of God" goal against England during the '86 World Cup is one of the most famous moments in soccer history.

Maradona was tracking down a ball and slyly used his hand to punch it over the goalkeeper into the net -- while pretending his hand never actually touched it. His acting job worked and the goal counted!

After his playing career, he struggled with drug addiction, alcohol abuse and health issues -- and had been hospitalized multiple times.

But, he was still widely loved in his home country -- and the fans came out in force to show love just a few weeks ago when he was being transported to the hospital for brain surgery.

As we previously reported, doctors discovered a blood clot on Maradona's brain that required emergency treatment ... and he went under the knife on Nov. 3.

In the days that followed, Maradona's doctor said the outlook was good and he expected the star to make a successful recovery.

But, something went terribly wrong on Wednesday ... and now the world is mourning Maradona's death.

RIP.

Cowboys Coach Markus Paul Dead At 54 After Suffering Medical Issue At Team Facility

Dallas Cowboys strength and conditioning coach Markus Paul died Wednesday evening following a medical emergency at the team facility Tuesday, the team confirmed.

"Markus Paul, surrounded by his family, passed away at the hospital this evening at the age of 54," the Cowboys said ... "The cause of death is pending."

Team owner Jerry Jones issued a statement, saying, "The loss of a family member is a tragedy, and Markus Paul was a loved and valued member of our family."

"He was a pleasant and calming influence in our strength room and throughout The Star."

"His passion for his work and his enthusiasm for life earned him great respect and admiration from all of our players and the entire organization."

"Our hearts are broken for his family and all of the individuals whose lives he touched and made better."

As we previously reported, Paul suffered a medical emergency at Cowboys headquarters at around 7:30 AM Tuesday morning and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Doctors scrambled to save Paul -- but despite their best efforts, he passed away Wednesday evening.

Paul had been a mainstay in NFL locker rooms for decades ... he played for the Chicago Bears from 1989 to 1993 and had a stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in '93 as well.

He later went on to become an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the New Orleans Saints in 1998. From there, he worked for the Patriots, Jets, Giants and Cowboys ... winning FIVE Super Bowls with those teams.

The Cowboys had just promoted him to lead their lead strength and conditioning department in January.

"Markus was a great coach and one of the best guys that I have ever known," NY Giants legend Eli Manning said on Twitter this week. "He will be missed."

Former Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes added, "My heart is heavy. One of the finest men and coaches I have ever met. The world lost a GREAT MAN today. We love you! RIP Markus Paul."

Tony Hsieh; Zappos Founder and Creator of Downtown Project Dies at Age 46

Tony Hsieh, the former head of Zappos who then decided to take on a huge real estate project aimed at remaking rundown parts of Las Vegas, has died at the age of 46. The cause of death is reported to be injuries sustained from a house fire, though details on how it started and any other injuries are not known at this time. The news was confirmed by DTP Companies, which operated the Downtown Project that was trying to revitalize those rundown areas of Vegas, and you can read their full statement below (via Yahoo).

"Good Afternoon, my name is Megan Fazio and I handle public relations for DTP Companies, formerly known as Downtown Project, which Tony Hsieh serves as the visionary of. With a heavy and devastated heart, we regret to inform you that Tony Hsieh passed away peacefully on November 27, 2020 surrounded by his beloved family.

Tony’s kindness and generosity touched the lives of everyone around him, and forever brightened the world. Delivering happiness was always his mantra, so instead of mourning his transition, we ask you to join us in celebrating his life.

On behalf of all DTP Companies employees and staff, we would like to express our deepest condolences to Tony’s family and friends who have all lost Tony as a cherished loved one, visionary and friend. Tony was highly regarded by all of his fellow friends and colleagues in the tight-knit family at DTP Companies, so this heartbreaking tragedy is one that affects many involved.

We ask that you continue to respect the family’s privacy during this most difficult and challenging time."

Hsieh helped build Zappos into a massive brand, and by 2009 he had sold the company to Amazon for around $1.2 billion. He would run the company for a while longer but would use some of that buyout money as the seed for the Downtown Project. He started buying up large areas of downtown, which sat empty as the city expanded and other areas were built up. He bought houses, empty lots, old casinos, and everything in between.

He then aimed these areas at startups, making deals to invest in them if they would move to Vegas and build their businesses Downtown, which would then bring entrepreneurs and jobs with them. It was a bold plan, and it's safe to say he's very much left his mark on Vegas.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Hugh Keays-Byrne, Immortan Joe In Mad Max: Fury Road, Dies At 73

Hugh Keays-Byrne, the actor modern fans best remember as "Immortan Joe" in Mad Max: Fury Road has died at the age of 73. Keays-Byrne was a beloved Australian character actor and director, who also played the role of Toecutter in the original Mad Max movie. Byrne's collaboration with Mad Max franchise director George Miller also included the actor being cast in Miller's infamous Justice League: Mortal movie as Martian Manhunter, though that project ultimately stalled while in the development stages. All the same, Hugh Keays-Byrne leaves behind a legacy of notable film and TV roles alongside the aforementioned Mad Max and Justice League projects and will be sorely missed.

Filmmaker Ted Geoghegan (We Are Still Here) shared news of Hugh Keays-Byrne's passing with fans:

Hugh Keays-Byrne, an unsung hero of Aussie cinema, has passed away at age 73. I'm continually floored that he played Toecutter, the central antagonist of 1979's MAD MAX *and* Immortan Joe, the central antagonist 2015's MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. Thanks for all the entertainment, sir.

By all accounts, Hugh Keays-Byrne, who trained at the Royal Shakespeare Company, was an absolutely wonderful human who fought very hard for environmental and humanitarian issues. This photo of him from earlier this year says it all. You will ride eternal, shiny and chrome.

Hugh Keays-Byrne was born in Srinagar in British-controlled India, in 1947, before moving to Britain as a young boy. He gravitated toward stage acting and was performing in the Royal Shakespeare Company by 1968, and remained with the company until 1972. In that same time, Keays-Byrne also booked several TV acting jobs, starting with Boy Meets Girl in 1967. The Royal Shakespeare Company took him to Australia 1973 to perform in Peter Brook's A Midsummer Night's Dream - a trip that led to Keays-Byrne relocating to Australia permanently.

While in Australia during the 1970s, Hugh Keays-Byrne made the jump from the TV screen to movies. He starred in the low-budget Australian biker film Stone in 1974, followed by steady film roles through the late '70s, culminating with his role as the villain "Toecutter" in George Miller's Mad Max in 1979. Keays-Byrne would continue doing character actor work in Australian and American genre films through the 1980s and '90s, before appearing in the Farscape franchise in the 2000s.

As mentioned, Keays-Byrne's career got a late and unexpected resurgence in the late 2000s, when George Miller came back and tapped him to star as Martian Manhunter in Justice League: Mortal. Though that film fell apart, Miller brought Keays-Byrne with him back to the Mad Max franchise, to star as villain Immortan Joe in Miller's 2015 reboot, Mad Max: Fury Road. The novelty of seeing "Toecutter" back in the franchise helped Hugh Keays-Byrne enjoy some of the biggest acclaim of his career. Fans were wondering if Keays-Byrne might appear again as Immortan Joe in the Fury Road prequel Mad Max: Furiosa, which is now moving forward with Anya Taylor-Joy (Queen's Gambit), Chris Hemsworth, and George Miller returning to direct.

R.I.P. Hugh Keays-Byrne. We offer condolences to his family and friends in this time of mourning.

David L. Lander, the actor known for playing the iconic sitcom character Squiggy on Laverne & Shirley, has passed away at age 73. According to TMZ, the legendary funnyman died due to complications from multiple sclerosis, a battle he fought for 37 years. The actor appeared in multiple films over the years in both a live-action and animated capacity. His film credits include 1941, Used Cars, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, A League of Their Own, and much more.

As for television, Lander's portrayal of Andrew "Squiggy" Squiggman opposite Michael McKean’s Lenny Kosnowski is a huge part of sitcom history. Their fictional band, Lenny and the Squigtones, was a fan-favorite part of the show, which ran from 1976 to 1983. McKean took to Twitter today to share a throwback photo in Lander's honor.

Hailing from Brooklyn, Lander met McKean while taking acting classes at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. This is where they invented their iconic characters, Lenny and Squiggy. They appeared together in multiple projects, including Steven Spielberg’s 1941. They reunited in 2001 to voice penguin cousins Henry and Louie on Oswald.

Lander was best known for playing Squiggy and even revisited the role throughout his career, appearing in films such as Scary Movie as Principal Squiggy (a great reference to Scream, which featured a principal played by Happy Days' Henry Winkler.) Laverne & Shirley was actually a spin-off of Happy Days, so Lander appeared on the original series as Squiggy in 1979 during Laverne & Shirley's run. He also voiced Squiggy on The Simpsons in 2002 and played the character in a couple of Saturday Night Live episodes in the 1990s.

Other television appearances by Lander included The Bob Newhart Show, Married... with Children, Twin Peaks, The Weird Al Show, Mad About You, and The Drew Carey Show. Lander’s last live-action role was playing Charlie on Break a Hip in 2015. He also voiced Donnie on SpongeBob SquarePants in 2016 and was last heard voicing Rumpelstiltskin on Goldie and Bear in 2017.

Lander was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1984 but did not go public with the news until 1999. In 2002, he published an autobiography titled Fall Down Laughing: How Squiggy Caught Multiple Sclerosis and Didn't Tell Nobody.

According to TMZ, Lander's wife Kathy and daughter Natalie were with him when he passed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
