Joe Clark, Tough and Dedicated NJ Principal Who Inspired Film ‘Lean on Me,' Dead at 82

Joe Louis Clark, whose toughness and dedication to the students at a troubled high school in New Jersey landed him on the cover of TIME magazine and inspired the 1989 movie "Lean on Me," has died at the age of 82, his family said.

The former educator and lifelong South Orange, New Jersey resident had retired to Gainesville, Florida, and was at home with family when he died Tuesday after a long battle with illness, his family said in a press release.

Clark helped turn around Paterson's Eastside High School, which was riddled with crime and drugs when he took over as principal. Before taking over at the school, Clark taught at grade school in Paterson and served as the Director of Camps and Playgrounds for Essex County. He was soon named principal at the elementary school, and the once-failing school was said to be transformed into the "Miracle of Carroll Street," his family said.

"Paterson has lost a legend. Joe Clark spoke strongly and carried a big stick," Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh said. "If anyone needs to see what type of positive influence he had on his students then I suggest they watch, "Lean On Me."

Born in Georgia in 1938, Clark moved to Newark with his family at the age of 6. He graduated from Newark Central High School, and earned degrees from William Paterson College, Seton Hall University and an honorary doctorate from the U.S. Sports Academy.

Before he started his teaching career, Clark was a U.S. Army Reserve sergeant and drill instructor, which his family said "engrained in him a respect for order and achievement." That attributes were on display during his time as principal of Eastside High School, where in one day he expelled 300 students for a variety of reasons.

He was known for roaming the halls of the school with a baseball bat and a blowhorn, and his strict methods earned him both praise and criticism nationwide. Clark said the baseball bat was not to be seen as a weapon, but rather as a symbol of choice: a student could either strike out, or hit a home run.

He was so well regarded that President Ronald Reagan offered him a position at the White House as a policy advisor, but Clark turned it down to remain with the students. He retired from Eastside High School in 1989, the same year that the film "Lean on Me," based on his time at the school and starring Morgan Freeman, was released. He continued to work as the director at an Essex County juvenile detention center in Newark for six years after that, and wrote Laying Down the Law: Joe Clark's Strategy for Saving Our Schools.

His family said that Clark's captivating, almost larger-than-life career also inspired John Legend and LeBron James direct a television series that reflected the transcendence of his philosophies.

'Gilligan's Island' star Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann, dies of COVID-19 complications

Dawn Wells, the actress best known for her role as Mary Ann in the '60s sitcom "Gilligan's Island," died Wednesday from COVID-19 complications, her representative told USA TODAY. She was 82.

Wells died Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. in Los Angeles from "causes related to COVID," Harlan Boll told USA TODAY in an email. He said she "passed peacefully ... in no pain."

The star, born in Reno, represented her state as Miss Nevada in the 1959 Miss America pageant, then switched to acting. Her first TV roles were on shows such as “Maverick,” “Bonanza" and “77 Sunset Strip” before she beat out 350 other actresses for the role of Mary Ann.

Portrayed on "Gilligan's Island" as a perky wholesome Kansas farm girl whose wardrobe included a gingham dress and belly-button-covering shorts, Wells told The Mansfield (Ohio) News Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, that the series always provided life lessons beyond the comedy.

“It was a fun, silly show that made you laugh and didn’t preach to the audience,” she said when the show marked its 55th anniversary in 2019. “But there was an awful lot in the character of Mary Ann that kids could learn from today: She was fair, she pitched in to help, she had standards, she wasn’t worried about a $500 purse, and she would be your best friend you could trust.”

Wells enjoyed working on the show and got along with her fellow castaways – even Tina Louise (Ginger), now the only surviving original cast member, despite rumors over the years that the two feuded.

"I will always remember her kindness to me," Louise said in a statement, according to The Associated Press. "We shared in creating a cultural landmark that has continued to bring comfort and smiles to people during this difficult time. I hope that people will remember her the way that I do – always with a smile on her face."

"Gilligan's Island" fans were split between crushes on Ginger vs. Mary Ann. Wells said in an interview in 2019 that her character's down-home appeal worked in her favor.

"Don’t get me wrong – Tina was so beautiful and sexy, and I learned so much from her," Wells told The Palm Beach Post. "But Mary Ann was wholesome, approachable and attainable. She’s the girl you’d have a crush on and want to bring home to Mom.”

Wells appeared in stage productions, movies and 150 TV shows in her career off the island – including "ALF," "Baywatch" (guest starring as Mary Ann Summers in both), "Growing Pains," "The Bold and the Beautiful," "Fantasy Island" and "The Love Boat."

Most recently, Wells starred in two web series – "Life Interrupted" and "She's Still on That Freakin' Island." She voiced Gumbalina Toothington in animated series "The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants" in 2019.

In 2018, a crowdfunding effort to support Wells raised nearly $200,000.

"After 2008, like many of us, Dawn suffered through the banking crash and lost everything, including her life savings, in addition to a life-threatening surgery which came close to killing her," explained Dugg Kirkpatrick, her friend and longtime hairdresser, on the initiative's page. "Dawn was a victim of an unexpected accident that required hospitalization for two months and a very long time to rest and heal."

Wells wrote several books about the show, including her 2014 tome, "A Guide to Life: What Would Mary Ann Do?"

“I wrote the book partly in response to fans over the years,” she told USA TODAY. “It’s amazing that so many people still appreciate Mary Ann’s sense of values. It was a show about seven people from various walks of life who were thrown together and had to adapt to get along despite their differences. That’s a lesson we can all learn.”

Dawn is survived by her stepsister, Weslee Wells. No services are scheduled at this time, Boll said.

Fellow members of Hollywood and fans alike mourned Wells on Twitter, recalling her role on "Gilligan's Island" and beyond.

Actor Jon Cryer recalled a time she came to a taping of his sitcom “Two and a Half Men.”

“It was such a thrill for me to meet Dawn Wells when she came to see Two and a Half Men,” Cryer wrote on Twitter. “She could not have been more lovely and gracious. I’m so grateful that I got to enjoy the work she loved doing.”

“Condolences to the family of Dawn Wells. Very sad,” “Star Trek” actor William Shatner wrote on Twitter.

"Bewitched" actress Erin Murphy wrote she was "absolutely devastated to share the news that my lifelong friend, Dawn Wells, has passed away."

"She was feisty, funny, talented and beautiful," Murphy added. "I’m heartbroken."

Oh, this so sad. Bon voyage, Mary Ann," Jane Lynch tweeted.

“Not the obituary I wanted to read today,” podcast host/columnist Dan Savage said.

Sumo Wrestler Once Known as 'World's Heaviest Boy' Dead at 21

A Russian sumo wrestler who used to be known as the "world's heaviest boy" has reportedly died at a very young age ... this after years of concern about his extreme weight.

Dzhambulat Khatokhov recently passed away, per Betal Gubzhev -- president of Sumo and Mass Wrestling Federation in Kabardino-Balkaria ... that's where Khatokhov had lived and grew up wrestling. A cause of death is unknown, but word is he'd lately had kidney problems.

The guy was a worldwide phenomenon for a couple reasons -- for one, he competed on the mat, but also other strength challenges (like arm wrestling) and proved to be successful at a young age. Second ... he was absolutely enormous size-wise, especially for his age.

At birth, reports say he only weighed in at around 6 lbs -- but by his first birthday ... he already clocked in at over 28 pounds and continued growing heavier and heavier. By the time he was nine, they say he weighed well over 300 pounds.

Khatokhov became the subject of much speculation, and the focus of several documentaries over the course of his life. Different experts examined him, and most expressed worry his life expectancy would be drastically shorter than normal kids his age.

You might think there was some sort of genetic defect he was dealing with that was causing his excessive weight gain and growth, but according to his mom there was nothing doctors could find to explain it.

She reportedly said this is just how God made her boy, and she, apparently, believed he was fully healthy.

Khatokhov was just 21.

RIP

 ;D ;D ;D

Another Getbigger claimed to win...so I might be 2nd.  Mods - please confirm that my post has not been edited in any way. :)

I take a complete mathematical approach to my predictions.  A friend of mine has beaten the books for UFC betting for the past 13 years, and I've beaten him every time we've both told each other our respective predictions.  I.e., he bet that both McGregor and Poirier would beat Khabib, and he also bet that Bisping would beat GSP.

These are the only times I've told him my bet, and I beat him each time.  And he does this professional.  It goes to show that autism combined with a mathematics background [redundant...autism CAUSED the mathematics background] are no joke.  Well...maybe to some people.

But I won the Dead Pool this year [or placed 2nd], and I will win again next year, as I'm going to spend more time making predictions this time out.

Former WWE star Shad Gaspard dies at 39.

Seems like he and his son were having trouble in the water at Venice beach. Life guard saved his son, when he came back to help Shad, he was nowhere to be found. Appeared 4 days later, drowned.
