Very true.  Although Mayweather was 40 by the time of his fight with McGregor, and had broken his hand twice, hadn't he?  In other words - McGregor had a puncher's chance.

I found that fight to be pretty entertaining.  I heard the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao was just a ballroom dance for 12 rounds.

its a disgrace that Mayweather overtook Marcianos record with his win against a guy who had never had a professional boxing match, its shouldnt even have been sancioned..

It's a heavyweight record. Even Wilder screwed with the draw to Fury.  Only casual and LDBC phuckboys recognize FMW's nonsense.  It's good marketing though. The non-heavyweight record is 82-0 before a defeat. I believe there is a Thai boxer right now with a 52/53-0 record.

Embarrassing for boxing standards, I think you mean.  ;)

Honestly, I say this as a pure MMA/UFC fight fan...the refined striking of boxing is not something I'm used to.  Nor is the nuance of the "cheat" moves that a seasoned professional like Mayweather will use to get out of a dangerous situation in boxing.

So to me, the Mayweather/McGregor fight was exciting to watch.  I think Joe Rogan and Brendan Shaub felt the same way about it, and I think Mayweather stated that he felt that he won 4 or 5 of the ~10 rounds, if there was an evaluation of each round.  From my memory, that was about right.

Anyone watching the fan with boxing knowledge probably had a lot less faith in the fight ultimately going to McGregor, but as a non-pure boxing fan, I thought it was great to watch.  Although it was annoying to pay $98 CAD [$0 USD] twice to buy it, only to ultimately end up streaming it because of server problems.  ;D

Georges St-Pierre said that even using MMA gloves would have completely changed the outcome of such a fight.  Because of the ability to dirty box - I guess small gloves change what you can do in the clinch.  So that is why to me, as a fan of MMA and not boxing, it was cool to watch.

Funnily enough, after watching Holyfield vs. Tyson II, I thought to myself "UFC striking is NOTHING close to professional boxing."

Mayweather could have finished him in one or two rounds if he wanted to, he would have just opened up with a series of unanswered punches forceing the ref to step in, hes light years ahead of McGregor, just look what he did to Gatti, and Gatti would have taken McGregor out in acouple rounds as well

I messed that one up - it was McGregor who said he felt that he [McGregor] won 4 or 5 of the ~10 rounds.

Although I guess no matter how that is stated, it is basically true.  ;D  Objectively...I seem to recall thinking McGregor won at least four rounds, maybe five.  So...

Of course in the end he was finished, so what rounds he won prior to that don't count for anything.

Do you really feel that Mayweather could have won that quickly?

I'm not a boxing fan, so I'm legitimately asking you...my impression was that Mayweather wanted to take McGregor outside of the 25 minute mark before beating him.  So after eight rounds, 24 minutes had surpassed - so just to be safe, he let nine full rounds [27 minutes] pass, and then - knowing full well that McGregor had never been in a fight longer than 25 minutes before - Mayweather decided to knock McGregor out.

Is there anything to that thought process, or was the time lapse completely for entertainment purposes?

I just didn't feel that Mayweather necessarily had the power to knock McGregor out that quickly.  It's not like McGregor isn't used to taking a shot.  But as I said, I'm not a boxing fan.  A bit more lately though - seeing how much better at striking boxers are than MMA fighters [seems obvious - but still surprised me] made me interested in the sport.

Mayweather would have swarmed him forcing the ref to stop it, he would have had no response to Mayweathers speed of attack and defence...

watch him dismantle Gatti here
