I was really disturbed by the fire in Australia.  The first thing I did was tune into the Golden Globe award ceremony so the celebrities could tell me what to do about it.

I'm pretty sure they want me to sell my car, stop using electricity, give more of my money to the federal government, and if possible......lay down and die.

Police in five Australian states have begun investigations into alleged arsonists responsible for helping fuel the deadly bushfires that have wracked the country this summer. On Monday, police in NSW reported they had already caught 24 alleged firebugs accused of deliberately lighting bushfires in a catastrophic season that has so far killed 18 people in the country’s most populous state.

Police are now working on the premise arson is to blame for much of the devastation caused this bushfire season. A strike force will investigate whether blazes were deliberately lit, and bring those responsible to justice.

Sydney has been engulfed in white smoke for about a month now. Some days you can't see more than a few blocks away....like being in LA in July!

It has been unusually hot the last few weeks and no rain. Just right for bush fires. Or forest fires as we call them in North America.

On January 4 in Penrith, NSW, it hit 48.9 degrees C. That is 120 degrees Fahrenheit! That is the hottest day I have experienced. So the forests here are dry and when the temp is over 100 F things can burn strongly.

There is a lot of concern for Australia in the news but living here things aren't that bad....except for the air. Not great for photography either.

The big cities are safe. It is the suburbs and small towns that are surrounded by forests that are vulnerable.

Every year we get plenty of bush fires. This year fires are more widespread and many have merged to be super infernos. Usually we get plenty of rain in December and January but this year hardly a drop.

The government here hasn't invested in enough equipment such as aircraft to fight these fires. Most years they borrow planes from Canada or the USA. Australia doesn't like spending money!
