Rush has been my favourite band (tied with Annihilator) since 1981.

Terribly upsetting news.

Neil was left alone when his daughter and wife died (separately, but essentially one after the other) and now he leaves behind his (new) wife and (new) daughter.

 :(

For me, Rush is officially gone.

I was OK with it being retired. But the entity still had its three equally-important members breathing. So it was comforting to know Neil, Geddy and Alex were “out there”.

One of the three is now dead.

Hail Neil Peart!

Saw Rush a couple times back in the 70s.

Got right up by the stage.  You could just walk up in those days.

I wonder who will buy his drumset?  It was amazing.

One of the best drummers - EVER!  The Professor, and an incredible lyricist.

Saw RUSH in concert 4 times, and they were awesome.

RIP

Amazing drummer. But has come to be a knee-jerk pick by so, SO many.

His snare work was frightening, and godly, but contemporary drumming has become SO much more complex, sophisticated and creative.

The level of some guys today is absolutely insane.

Go to YouTube and watch some Buddy Rich solos and have a reality check

You assume I’m not VERY familiar with all things BR. Like I say, he was a monstrous drummer and the consummate professional musician. A legend who actually deserves the recognition as such. Some of his drumming is downright scary (along with some of his personality traits, haha).

My knowledge of the man runs reasonably deep.

With all this stated, reality is there are drummers today who are equally as monstrous and talented behind a kit. But as with all legends, no, no one will ever be a Buddy replacement.

He was the greatest to do what he did. And he set a benchmark of excellence that’ll always be a target for aspiring musicians.

Peart was the GOAT in Rock music. His lyric writing is second to none. Top 5 band for me since I first got "All the Worlds a Stage" in 8th grade at age 12.
Heck it came out in 1976 when I was ten. Timeless stuff.

Published 6 books. Great writer.

Saw them so many times, lost count, even their last R40 tour, 4 years back. I didn't realize he was battling cancer, seemed to keep it quiet in a day of intrusive media.

1st album Drummer John Rutsey passed back in 2008, sort of a GetBigger who got into bodybuilding at one point in his life post-Rush.

Rush is dead, would like to see some sort of Lifeson/Lee tribute show or something w/ some different drummers guesting. Of course they would need to be amazing (Portnoy from Dream Theatre, etc).
Sort of like what Gov't Mule did when Bassist Allen Woody died.

I guess E. Van Halen isn't doing well w/ throat or mouth cancer (not good) childhood music hero's dropping all around.

Sucks. Strangely I was listening to them while it happened  :'( I was more into the heavier forms of metal, but Hemispheres to Moving Pictures were classic. His influence on drummers & rock/metal music in general was undeniable.

No. He wasn't.

Great drummer.  He would be lost behind Peart’s kit.  Maybe greatest percussionist would be a more suitable description of Peart.
