Bill Grant at 73
« on: January 22, 2020, 03:01:37 AM »
Looks great. That scar, I remember he had some pretty serious illness some years back and had some surgeries, cant remember what it was for though.
Looks great otherwise. Not many 73 year olds looking like that. Met him around 10 years ago at the AOBS Strongman/Barbell dinner.

Really good guy, looked great then, it was right before he became ill. Good to see he's doing well...

If I'm not mistaken, he looked extremely good until possibly as late as age 63 [2010].  It was somewhere between 2005-2010 where he was still looking extremely good.

Obviously his physique has regressed since then, but over 70, you have to expect that.  I think the absolute best bodybuilders can sometimes hit 60 and still have almost ageless physiques [where you wouldn't guess they were that old if you didn't see their faces], but at age 65-70 or so...Father Time catches up to everyone.

That said - 73!  Damn...  :o

This ^^   As you get older, it seems like life pisses by much faster. I remember being a kid, school summer vacation for 10 weeks used to seem like an eternity.
10 weeks goes by like nothing these days.

I think the operation was for some kind of intestinal blockage like a twisted intestine. He didn't think he was going to make it. He was one of the few during Venice Beach Gold's days that had a job while he trained back in the day.

Saw him compete at the Night of the Champions and he posed to George Benson's On Broadway. Fantastic poser and his physique was incredible. If you remember what held him back was his small calves. He had genetic small calves. Other than that he had everything.

When I was 21, someone told me that our perception from life up to the age of 25, and 25 through to the age of 80, were both the same.

At first, that seemed to be the case.  20-21-, then later 22-23-, seemed to be speeding up for me.  By 23, I thought 40 seemed just around the corner.

But now at 38, I must say...23 through to 38 was something quite similar to 8-23.  Both periods of 15 years seemed to be quite long!

So I'm hoping into the future, that holds true too.

Nope, time speeds after 55.  A week is nothing. A day is a flash.  Summer is over before you know it.

55, eh?  Interesting.

Kind of sad.

I think about my friend's grandfather - he will be 98 in May, and turned 55 in 1977!  He's had a nice, long life.  He seems to have lost the will to live since around age 95, but I suppose that is to be expected at that age.

I feel that way now at 38, but I feel like I'm just getting out of it.  I had a bad couple of years due to getting involved with the wrong woman, and a falling out I had with one promoter in the local strongman scene, and a couple of other things.

Luckily, illuminati reminded me that in physique terms, I am literally in my prime - and while I do gain fat easier than I used to, I am also able to hold onto muscle mass much more easily.

So here's my conundrum - while I'm getting out of my bleak stage now, if I'm able to feel lousy at this stage in my life, with no real physical markers making me feel that way, it just makes me wonder how I will feel as things gradually do break down for me.

Out of curiosity, when did you start to feel in ill health with respect to your prime, joswift?  Was it age 40 or 45, or something, where you noticed - or was it more of a gradual decline?

it was around August 2018, I had just done a series of shows and looking forward to a long offseason, just started feeling worse, the harder I tried the worse I became, tired, depression, real bad time.
illness was kidney stones, both kidneys affected, I think that was what was causing the lethargy, kidneys not functioning at full strength, had Surgery March 2019, almost died after complications, 17 days in hospital..

Still having therapy for the mental health issues , kidneys hopefully OK now
