You people picking guns wouldn't last very long.  While useful against the infected (not zombies) as portrayed in 28 Day Later, the sound would only attract more infected.  Likewise with regular zombies too. 

Regular zombies - heavy duty machete or sling shot (easy ammo to find).

Infected - spike police shield and mace or regular tommy gun (if you want to use a firearm)

Are slingshots really that deadly?I can't imagine them working well in the walking dead

Ruger GP 100 (self defense, choice of ammo, conceal-ability, hunting)  Mossberg 590a1 12 gauge (self defense, choice of ammo, hunting).  Long gun and pistol.  Both are built like tanks, have few moving parts and take largely available commercial ammo.
