Cuomo Orders 100% of Nonessential N.Y. Workforce to Stay Home

(Bloomberg) --

Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered New Yorkers to stay at home for the foreseeable future, after days of conflict with Mayor Bill de Blasio over whether such an extreme measure needed to be taken to arrest the spread of coronavirus.

The move follows a similar order by California’s Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday, leaving only limited businesses allowed to operate and requires people to remain home other than going outside for exercise.

As the state’s death toll reached 35, Cuomo said the new orders would go in place late Sunday and exempt services including public transit and grocery stores. Banks and food delivery are also categorized as essential.

“This is the most drastic action we can take,” he said.

He said New Yorkers should stay indoors and shouldn’t take public transportation unless necessary. The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 rose to 7,102, adding 2,950 since Thursday. New York City added 1,939 cases, to 4,408. The state has the highest infection rate in the nation.

The new order has the force of law, Cuomo said. “They will be enforced,” he said. There will be a fine for businesses that don’t comply, but not for individuals.

The rules are being adopted to protect the state’s most vulnerable population, including seniors over 70 and people with existing health problems, the governor said.

Part of the dispute between Cuomo and de Blasio had to do with semantics. The governor has said he abhors the term “shelter in place,” because it first became commonly used as a strategy to stay alive during a nuclear attack, and more recently during an active shooter situation in a school.

On Friday, he said, “It’s not a shelter in place order,” he said, and referred to California’s order, known as “stay at home.

“Words matter. California does not have a shelter in place order. They put in a new policy. It is not shelter in place,” he said. “People are scared and people panic.”

Cuomo said the rise in positive diagnoses had prompted the tighter restrictions.

“You look at these numbers and you understand why. Sixteen days ago we were at zero,” he said “Those numbers are why we are taking those actions. Just increase that curve and you will see it more than doubles our health care system’s capacity. It more than triples the number of ICU beds with ventilators that we could possibly arrange. That’s why we are taking these actions.”

Under the order, seniors and people with health conditions must remain indoors, prescreen all visitors and shouldn’t visit households with multiple people. Anyone visiting should wear a mask. Older New Yorkers shouldn’t take public transportation unless it’s urgent and absolutely necessary, Cuomo said.

I expect more states to follow along with this very soon.  There are places along the beach here in FL near me that are actually putting up steel hurricane shutters because they fear in two weeks when the gov't can't get food vouchers into people's hands fast enough, there will be looting.

Gov. DeSantis just ordered all dine-in restaurants and gyms closed (although 24-Hour Fitness closed up Monday night, shortly I got my upper body workout done). He's taking grief for not closing the beaches (Clearwater Beach, in particular). But, he's leaving that call to the mayor of Clearwater and/or Pinellas County officials.

The mayor of Orange County (and the mayor of Orlando) just put a curfew on the area, from 11pm to 5am.

Ft Lauderdale already closed their beaches.  In the middle of Spring Break.  They all ran to Miami though.  All restaurants are closed unless they are selling To Go meals or doing deliveries.  All delivery charges have been suspended.  Most gyms are closed except private gyms.  Movie theaters are closed.   Some malls are open surprisingly.

I expect a curfew to take place as well.  And then it to be adjusted from dusk until dawn.

He had to make it look like he was doing something because of what the shithead in California did. He knows that the social distancing measures are a joke and impossible to enforce. He tips it off, here:

“This is the most drastic action we can take,” he said.

Now, he can say that he did everything in his power and that some risks just can’t be mitigated.

People staying 6 feet apart in Manhattan. LOL. I guess that means only one person can ride in an elevator at a time.

There’s gonna be some serious backlash to this shit very soon. Some very rich powerful people are losing their asses and aren’t going to take it for much longer.

Here’s how this ends . There will be no major outbreak just as there was no major outbreak in January and February when they were no precautions in place. These guys can then claim victory about they averted a crisis that was never gonna happen and there will be no way to falsify the claim.

Typically it’s the stocks that hold up the best during the crash that also do the best when the market starts to recover. In this case, it’s consumer staples, Amazon, Walmart and Costco.

Lock down is normal, it happened during Spanish Flu, learn from history. If you can't remember back that far, you might remember in late January 2020 China locked down the country, even welding people into their homes in Wuhan. So you had plenty of warning of whats to come.

Your knowledge of history apparently stops at 1919. Antibiotics were invented, remember? Gene sequencing of viruses was invented, remember? Determining aerosol vs surface transmission of diseases was discovered, remember? What are you- 12 years old?

Why are cities and countries being locked down?  ??? ??? ???

It’s all being done to provide cover for an economic reset and keep a failing European Union experiment alive. China’s economy is slowing down. The euro zone is about to head into recession. The reason Trump is on board is because if he doesn’t go along the dollar’s value will skyrocket. Even with all of the feds interventions, the dollar has dramatically increased in value compared to the euro during this crisis.

Trump wants weaker dollar but it could be a hard sell | Article [AMP] | Reuters

https://mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN1UD1I6

A weaker dollar could help U.S. businesses compete globally by making exports less expensive, boosting the economy and potentially helping Trump's bid for re-election in 2020.

Thanks, there’s more.

In the last 36 years flu season has peaked in January and February yet the first person in New York City to die of corona was an 82-year-old woman with emphysema, in March.

The Flu Season | CDC

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/flu-season.htm

During this 36-year period, flu activity most often peaked in February (15 seasons), followed by December (7 seasons), January (6 seasons) and March (6 seasons).

Very convenient for all these draconian measures to take place right as flu season is coming to an end. This way, the powers that be can take credit for preventing a crisis that was never going to happen anyway.

Not sure what lessons we can draw from the Spanish Flu, here.

The Spanish Flu killed the young and healthy , in their tens of millions.

This- so far- has killed thousands of old people or people with additional severe medical conditions.

There is a certain line of thinking that ,before a vaccine is found,we should let the disease run its course and let the population develop herd immunity .

And the Spanish Flu came in waves . The first wave hit the sick and the elderly ,while the second wave took out the young ,who did not get immunity from  the first wave.

Yes, a lockdown works, flattening peak disease rates , preventing health services from being overwhelmed . Still, we will be seeing repeat outbreaks ,until most people have been infected or a vaccine is found.

So USA wants Hyperinflation?

China owns the majority of the US debt and figures they might want to payback China with worthless $

Except, I've been hearing that theory for decades and the $ shows no signs of slowing down

There’s not gonna be hyper inflation in the United States because everybody is inflating. It’s just a worldwide currency devaluation:

BEIJING (Reuters) - China is set to unleash trillions of yuan of fiscal stimulus to revive an economy expected to shrink for the first time in four decades amid the coronavirus pandemic, while a planned growth target is likely to be cut, according to four policy sources.

China doesn't own the majority. The Federal Reserve owns the vast majority.

China is a large holder of US debt. The point is that if they’re all inflating together nobody’s currency inflates more than any other.

In fact, the dollar has actually appreciated in terms of the euro recently even with all the fed’s money printing.

This is a windfall for Washington DC. They are happy as shit over there. They get to issue treasuries (debt) which the Fed just buys with printed money. Congress then gets to distribute the money.

This is why suddenly all of these Democratic governors are praising Trump.

If we did that it would be called counterfeiting and we’d be locked up for an extended period.

“Make the Decision to Stay Off the Island”: With the Virus Bearing Down, It’s Nantucketers Versus the Rich Summer Crowd.

Nantucket has approximately 10,000 year round residents. In the summer months the population swells to 50,000. The well healed are rapidly fleeing population centers, such as New York City and Los Angeles, for weekend homes in the countryside, away from other people. The Hamptons, on Long Island, or the islands off the East Coast of the United States are teeming with as much life in mid-March as they usually are in mid-July.

On March 17, there were no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the island. This is good because there is only one small community hospital. Nantucket has limited medical resources and a surge of cases could quickly overwhelm the hospital. If people start panicking and want to leave, the options are limited to occasional ferries and flights. The private-jet crowd, can always come and go as they please.
