COVID-19 has been disproportionately killing black and Hispanic New Yorkers, according to new data released today by the state. Black and Hispanic populations have represented 18% and 14%, respectively, of New York's coronavirus deaths, even though they make up 9% and 11% of the state's population outside New York City.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Tuesday that the state's deadliest one-day spike in coronavirus deaths had occurred over the previous 24 hours.

In Rockland, Spring Valley and Monsey have been hit hardest by the virus. Meanwhile, in Westchester the number of people who need a hospital bed has remained manageable.

Coronavirus Updates: After Pressure, NYC Releases Racial Breakdown Of COVID-19 Deaths

Latino and black residents in New York City have higher mortality rates from coronavirus, according to  preliminary numbers released by the city on Wednesday morning.

The early data shows that of those who have died from coronavirus in the city, 34 percent were Latino residents, while 28 percent were blacks.

Black New Yorkers have the highest crude death rate: 23.1 out of 100,000 people. Latino New Yorkers have the second highest reported death rate, 21.3 out of 100,000. But adjusted for age, the death toll is slightly higher for Latinos, who have a death rate of 22.8 versus 19.8.

The released data represents only 63 percent of reported deaths in New York City because according to the city, the vast majority of cases are reported by labs and often did not have race or ethnicity data.

Both rates for blacks and Latinos are significantly higher than of whites, which have a crude death rate of 15.7 per 100,000, and an age-adjusted death rate of 10.2

Asians have the lowest death rate from the disease. Among those who have died, 7.2 percent were Asian.

NYC Mayor: Ventilator Need ‘Much Less Than Expected’

NEW YORK—New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on April 8 that the city’s need for ventilators is much lower than projected.

“In the last few days, we’ve actually seen fewer ventilators needed than were projected,” de Blasio said. “We expected the number of ventilators being needed being more and more going into this week. We’ve seen actually much fewer needed than we expected.”

Last week, the city’s daily need for ventilators grew by 200 to 300 units as hospitals dealt with a surge of COVID-19 patients. The growth has dropped off dramatically this week, with 100 or fewer ventilators added every day, according to de Blasio.

The Big Apple’s African American and Hispanic communities are being hardest hit as the coronavirus pandemic rips through the five boroughs, preliminary statistics released by City Hall show.

Hispanic New Yorkers account for 34 percent of the coronavirus fatalities despite being 29 percent of the city’s population.

The stats also revealed that African Americans make up 28 percent of COVID-19 deaths — even though they are just 22 percent of the city’s population

Dr. Anthony Fauci took time during Tuesday's White House coronavirus press briefing to draw attention to societal problems, delving into how African Americans in some states had been harder hit by the novel coronavirus in terms of intensive-care intubations and risk of death compared with the rest of the population.

In Chicago, more than half of all COVID-19 positive test results and 72% of recorded virus-related deaths have been among African Americans, who make up just 32% of the city's population and 15% for the state of Illinois.

In parts of Wisconsin, the numbers have been even more disproportionate. Seventy-three percent of all COVID-19 deaths in Milwaukee County have been among black people, who make up under half of all positive test results and just 28% of the county's population.

Fauci raised the subject after President Donald Trump left Tuesday evening's briefing halfway through.

Unfortunately, too many black and brown people's behaviors contributes a great deal to their numbers being so high.  As you all know, I am a liberal but I am not considered woke because I dare to suggest this.

Exactly, our leader Gretchen in MI announced today she is creating a task force to look into the health care discrepancies between whites and blacks in this situation. That's not the issue.

I like her for the most part and agree that there are discrepancies btw races.  But, not EVERYTHING is race.  The reason why black/brown folks are getting infected at higher rates is in large part because of their personal choices/practices.  Now, once they get sick it may be worth looking into why they may or may not be getting adequate care.

I'm sure we've talked before but I cannot remember where in Michigan you reside.  I am in Wayne County.

I live in the Texas, where literally everyone is obese, but the african american population has the highest rate of obesity (around 40% in 2018). 

I think Texas should start a McDonald's task force to ensure there are no racial discrepancies with their offerings.

Oh shut the fuck up about behavior.   You can replace "black" with "poor" or homeless and its the exact same statistic.   The poor doesn't have access to medical services or checkup and usually work low end jobs like fast food, cashier at Walmart, grocery clerk, etc where they stand a greater chance of getting the virus

The behavior is an absolute factor. The black community denying it and refusing to self police is pushing more and more white people out of their corner.  In my last post I addressed my concerns about inadequate health care. Lastly, I drive through neighborhoods in Detroit regularly.  Shit neighborhoods, nice neighborhoods. Know what they all have in common? Fucking bars on windows and doors. When I drive to Columbus I pass through a shithole, meth infested area filled with hillbillies. Guess what? No bars on doors, no fucking public gatherings during a pandemic. Spare me the bullshit. Black and brown people are systematically disadvantaged in America. I get it. They need to start raising the bar for themselves. Period. I think Bill Cosby got hung out to dry for calling black people out. And you? They fucking hate you. Being a homo and all.
