The commercial gym business as we've known is abruptly all over. Moving forward bodybuilding and powerlifting contests will largely be battles of who owns the better equipped home gyms. With this in mind, you will see a rise in more affluent individuals with superior physiques. Poor, broke members of society won't be able to afford a well appointed home gym.
Says who?

This may have been discussed earlier .... but is it remotely possible that the Venice Beach outdoor 'pit' will be the last gym standing within the Los Angeles city limits!?

There may be more than one or two GetBiggers who can recall that the first and possibly only gym standing back in the 30's/40's was the rusty and well-worn Santa Monica  'pit' which grew into a world wide phenomena.

And I think that history will be repeating itself.

What say you, Wes, Prime, and you other well-worn, elderly farts who can recall how great this 'game' actually was back in them good old days!?

Back in the 30's-40's up to 1944, I wasn't born yet. In 1950 when I was 6 years old, I lived in Michigan and probably had no idea what a gym was. I discovered the Santa Monica 'pit' around 1957 when walking south from State Beach at the north end of Santa Monica. The very first gym I worked out at was Vic Tanny's in Reseda CA.

In Greenville, SC Gold's just closed the newest gym they built but (for now) are keeping the one they bought from a competitor a few years ago. Both corporate owned. The older gym, which I had belonged to until recently, was pathetic compared to the new one. Superior management skills at the corporate headquarters, haha.

Many companies(like Sears) faced with an unwinding of their business model become a real estate business.

Gold's probably looked at both properties and realized they "may" be able to lease the new one out to somebody.

Yeah - I agree. It's about a quarter mile from the Interstate and a busy area. Unfortunately it was only Gold's worth going to - everything was in perfect shape and they even had a pool!

I think the last Vic Tanny here in Michigan closed right around the time I started going to a gym.  Gotta be close to 25 years now.

Why would chain gyms be effected by coronavirus shutdown anyway?  Who cancels their $10 a month membership just because the gym will be closed down for a few weeks or months?

But 24 isn’t one of those gyms charging “10” a month

Here in san jose a monthly is about $75 and that is for single club access. They charge $20 for a single workout!

That fee is a bit rich for my pocketbook. Gratefully, being a senior I have the advantage of the Silver and Fit program which costs me nothing and allows me access to most gyms in the area, including the chains like 24 Hour and L.A. Fitness should I want to hit the gym while traveling. San Jose, is an expensive place to live and probably to run a business. I'm not surprised at the price of a gym membership there.

I doubt you ever owned a gym. Not the lucrative enterprise that many assume them to be. High investment, low return, long hours business.

Bills have to be paid every month. If no new people join then the profit margin goes way down.

Most privately owned gyms will have a hard time surviving if the closures go on for several months.

I can see no one joining during this shutdown but wouldn't the longtime members fees at least pay the lease on the building and equipment?  There would be no electric or water bill to pay plus they should be getting a business grant or loan for the shutdown.

The current gym I train it only opened just under two years ago and in the last 6 months the owner has really been investing money in the place and the number of members soared. After a slow year building up the business the numbers were increasing and he was finally starting to do quite well. He even bought some nice machines and he took on a number of quite busy PTs. I feel quite sorry for the owner and the uncertainty he is facing.

I will be back when it is safe to do so although I probably will be quite cautious for a while. I have been training at home and it is not the same for me. I have limited equipment (KBs and parallel bars) and am getting decent workouts, however if  the weather is bad I cannot train. I will definitely buy a house with a garage so I can train no matter the weather when I sell my current house.

I wonder if many PTs will leave the industry too, a recession, even relatively short term, may prevent people spending money on 'luxuries' such as PTs etc.

You don't need a fancy gym to have a good physique. I can find heavy things in my back alley.
