He was a marine prior to the Vietnam War. But didn’t fight in Vietnam. He apologized in 1998 for misleading people.

I thought he was really good in the role, bringing a menace to the character that was wonderfully creepy. 

John Gacy, though, was actually 7 inches shorter than Dennehy.  It would have been more interesting to
see how a little twerp was able manipulate dozens of young men and the police without towering over them.

But still, if he'd just let him eat there'd have been no bother. Sheriff abused his power, caused the death of a good officer and friend. He had to live with that guilt until he passed yesturday

He gave a very strong convincing performance
Surprising how few big name actors take on baddie roles - perhaps despite their big name few of them have the ability to take on such roles
