He probably still is alive.
However, it matters, because if he is dead and there is a power vacuum it is possible China might decide to step in and back a new leader of their choosing and have even more influence.
Also, there could be a power struggle in the leadership as they might not necessarily accept a female leader. And no one knows what those factions will stand for.
