Mike Tyson back in training
« on: May 02, 2020, 12:25:21 AM »
Look at this beast. 53 years old and still has the old moves. The bob and weave. Note how he really throws his hips and whole body into those blows. Damn, I miss those few precious years when he had it all together and just destroyed his opponents. I use to get chills watching his fights live.

Well, we have Lewis' point of view training with Tyson when Mike was still a teen.

 8) 8) 8) Tyson in between 1985-1989 was incredible he brought the heavyweight division back from the title swapping hands and waist lines like clockwork with a bunch of duds (with the exception of Larry Holmes) now THAT fight (a 1980 Larry holmes) against Tyson would of been some fight.

Watching his fights back then as a teenager gave you goosebumps, we would take bets and all cram around the TV set never before had anyone seen a 18-19 year old heavyweight with those type of skills, power and speed, when Kevin Rooney was sacked it was the beginning of the end for mike in terms of the skills, fundamentals and discipline, and when those things went it was the beginning of the end for the man.

Regardless of how history played out for him after 1990 he brought back the excitement, the crowds, the money and destructive violence too the heavyweight division and his still standing record (34 years and counting) as the youngest heavyweight champion in history is testament too his natural talent determination and desire that if you want it bad enough you just might have a shot @ the greatest prize in sports

53 years old a few 3 round exhibitions? Well looking @ his current condition hell why not there’s not many 50 year old former champions that can still throw hands with speed n power like that good on him hard too believe it’s been 34 years since watching him butcher Trevor Berbick live and then free on tv so long ago.

well that’s a good question my immediate thoughts would be hands down Tyson (a 1986-1988 Tyson) however the thing with Lewis is imo he actually got better AFTER 30...so it’s hard too say exactly when Lennox Lewis was in his prime.

My take on it is a young prime Tyson beats a young 25 year old Lennox Lewis, he had not acquired the patience, ring generalship and pro experience too keep a rapport, no fear, speed, power and defensive animal like Mike Tyson was as a 20 year old off him imo Tyson would knock the younger version of Lennox Lewis out and in a brutal fashion.

Bye the time Lewis had fought the likes of McCall, Morrison, Roddack, Mercer, Holyfield etc etc...he THEN had that battle toughness and ring IQ and generalship needed too have the confidence the maturity and patience too potentially beat a 20 year old mike Tyson, that’s not a certainty...that’s just a opinion ether way I will say this.

The fight we saw between those 2 in the early 2000s would not of been the same fight we’d see as a 1986 Mike Tyson vs a 1999 Lennox Lewis it would be close but being slightly biased I’d say mike bye a knockout  8) or without my biased point of view Lewis bye a close 12 round decision.

Spot on. Especially the part about Rooney. Mike was still a kid and needed the support and guidance from the guys who brought him up.

He was on Joe Rogan not long ago saying how he didn't even workout anymore because he wanted nothing to do with the Mike that used to be. I'm still a huge fan and if he did do an Exhibition bout he'd definitely have my money.

I remember that but remember how many before him had said the same thing and then they are back again. When your whole identity revolved around your days as a world class athlete it can be hard to let go when you really haven't found anything to replace it. I think it's good for him to be back in training by for the love of God I hope he doesn't try to make a come back at 53.

Still, when I look at him. The way he throws those punches. It's like he could literally punch holes right through my delicate bod.

Tyson wouldn't even last a round  with any top 10 HW

Are you sure about 10 as a number? "Top" is a bit subjective with these weak divisions.

yup I hear you but let’s for a moment forget about someone as high profile and as great a Boxing Champion Mike Tyson was in his prime and take a look @ those of us that were even @ National or even @ Regional level once how many of us can say honestly long after our best days were over can say we don’t watch and assess who the new generation of whatever sports we were good @

Like most of the guys from my generation of the late 1980s-late 1990s who Did Wrestling, Kickboxing, Muay Thai etc I’ve watched what’s around nowadays I think WTF I could run right over these “new guys” I could come back right now and beat them

So all hyped up out the door I go on a basic no frills 6km run get back do just a simple 3 2min rounds on the heavy bag and 3 2min rounds of standup grappling with more or less a couple of nobody’s hit the shower and for fucks sake just trying too roll out of bed the next morning and try getting though the next 4-5 days @ work Hubbling around like a 80 year old...

ah that’s why it’s not a good idea too “come back” I can’t even do the above anymore let alone get back in the ring and take whatever’s coming back @ me.

When I watch someone on a totally different level like Tyson NOW @ 53 years old I wonder what’s going though his mind...I’d be very surprised if he’s not thinking the same thing but you want too know something Pellius?

Watching Mike now @ 53 in that brief clip, IF it was humanly possible (witch it probably isn’t) he could actually be trained properly keeping in mind his age wear n tear etc for say..6-8 months, and IF it was possible for 1 of these cashed up promoters like Hearn, Warren, Arum etc could arrange a sanctioned boxing contest over just 3...2min rounds,

IMO I don’t see why even now as a old man Mike Tyson wouldn’t be able too punch a few holes though a few Top 10 heavyweights nowadays (under those restricted conditions) I mean it’s not like we have a incredible array of talent in there after Joshua, Wilder, Fury, White, Ruiz and Parker imo

In his prime he was a wrecking machine. After his mentor died he didn't have any guidance. Fame, pills, alcohol and the fast life style wrecked him. He was so much fun to see him fight in the early days. In the later years he just looked for the knock out without defense. He will go down in history and so many of the current heavy weights will be forgotten quickly.

I read that he plans to do some exhibition type matches. That would be fine. Kind of like WWF stuff. People love to watch this guy. But you, especially with contact sports, you can't overcome just getting old. Mike may look good for a few seconds on the pads but when things go over a minute it will degrade exponentially. Foreman was able to get away with it because of his fighting style. Just this big lumbering monster that could hit like a truck. Someone with a style like Ali where footwork, technique, and agility is required, being very active in the ring is for young guys. Tyson was a very active fighter in his prime. Bobbing, weaving, constantly moving, and throwing hard and fast from all angles. All the training in the world isn't going to get you in the shape needed at the world-class level. Look at Kimbo Slice. Always kept in shape. Trained constantly. When you saw footage of him training in the gym he looked like a beast. Then when he got in the cage in his last fight he looked pathetic. Just as pathetic as his other has been/never was opponent. Both gassed and just hanging on to each other to keep from falling to the ground. And Kimbo was 46 years old and never let himself go like Tyson did.

I'm with Che on this one. Tyson wouldn't last a round with a legit pro.

STFU! We're talking combat sports. Something you know nothing about. Go back to posing in front of the mirror in your frilly panties blowing kisses at yourself.

Anybody ever see Wilder "box" and I use the term "box" loosely..............wou ldn`t surprise me if Tyson put him on his ass.  ;D

Like pellius said exhibition matches with proceeds going to charity.

Nothing to prove but why not he gets in great shape and it`s for a worthy cause it`s not like he`s just some clown that lives next door he`s fucking Mike Tyson.

mike has always been explosive on the mitts, is at best a 2-3 round fighter like shannon briggs now. lets assume brezeale is ranked 10. he'll smash mike.
