Did not know the gentlemen personally. Today I spoke with two guys who train at Golds Venice and are real friends with Shad... They both said he was always friendly, respectful and a sincerely nice guy who was thrilled to have had some success in Pro Wrestling and was humble at all times.
Regarding rip tides and undercurrents... I grew up spending all Summer's on Cape Hatteras on North Carolina's Atlantic Ocean. A strong rip tide is a frightening force and absolutely too strong to beat. We learned as kids, relax, tread water and ride the tide out. It will stop. Most rip tides run parallel to the shore and not out to sea. I very clearly remember sitting in the line up on a surfboard and half the line up- about 6-8 surfers all got picked up in a rip tide. We were moving up the beach as fast as a person could run. The rip tide took all of us 1/4 mile up the beach. Just crazy. The experienced guys just said, "relax hang on to your board, it will spit us out..." 30 seconds later the current just stopped and we all started laughing. Scared the crap out of me.
