The key to getting back to shore is to swim with the current nearly parallel to the shore. Angled slightly towards shore. Trying to swim in a straight line back to shore will only exhaust you and lead to your frustration, exhaustion, panic and do demise.

Your sage advice is way too late, Johnny Weissmuller

Some of you are fucking assholes.  He died because he told the rescuers to save his son first.  He was a very experienced swimmer but not even Michael Phelps can out swim an unexpected rip current

No bro. That’s the problem people think if you don’t go out you’re safe. If your waist deep, a rip can get you.

Also if you can’t break free by swimming parallel, then you go with the flow. 80% of rips go in clock Circle direction and will lead back to the break waves and back to beach. Even the 20% will go max 1300 ft or see and can either swim back or a rescuer already sees you being drifted

True.  Drowning is very painful.  I have experienced it as a child but was pulled from the water.  I can't swim so I would only go waist deep in the ocean as a child.  I kinda learned to bodysurf but was always with someone from my family or a friend and in a pool my father told me that if I went too far and the water was over my head to just wait to reach the bottom and then push off  as hard as I could to reach the top.  He also had me practice holding my breath.

I might be able to learn to swim now but my leg is so weak and I'm afraid to try. Besides I don't own a pool and don't know anyone else that does.  ;D

I'm sorry this man drowned.  That is a horrible and painful way to go.  At least lifeguards were able to save his son.
