I'm white, Jewish and live in New York City. I can totally appreciate what it is to have had white privilege during the 70's & 80's in that cops NEVER really bothered me in any capacity and it was fairly simple to both get into the universities I applied to when younger (given that I also had the grades, standardized test score, extracurriculars etc) and land the jobs I sought after as a young adult. Being white in NYC was always a blessing when growing up, because everyone (law enforcement, teachers and strangers) typically gave you the benefit of the doubt.

Fast forward to today, as an older, GAY, white man, that just so happens to be Jewish, much of that privilege is gone, because being GAY trumps all other parts to who I am. More than half of the Jews I know don't accept my sexual preference. More than half of my peers in my age group aren't cool enough yet to accept someone that is gay. Not to mention that NYC is so damn racially diverse that having white skin color and facial features isn't the calling card it once was in the 70's & 80's.

Now, is there such a thing as whites that are so poor that their skin color alone doesn't separate them from their obvious economic class? Yes. If you're a downtrodden, backwoods, low-brow, knuckle dragging behemoth that has kids with his cousin and makes meth out of your trailer, then I can see where you might lack the kind of white privilege that is advertised on TV. Having white privilege also comes with certain requirements (i.e. price of admission), that being you must have money. Money separates those that are afforded a certain level of respect and actually heard when they speak, from those that are inconsequential.

White privilege is not so much about whites getting free money or opportunities at their doorstep, instead it means that you will not suffer the same level of hardship afforded to our African American counterparts by Law Enforcement.

White privilege is a myth I can tell you from experience. 13 years old walking to my friends house. Cop pulls up tell me to get in the back of the cruiser , I ask what's going on he tells me to shut up. Drives like 5 minutes , pulls up in front of some house takes me out and asks the lady on the porch " Is this him? " shes like " No " he tells me I'm free to go , I had to walk back myself. Same age when my friends and I would go into a store we were followed around by security.

23-24 years old , car had a loud exhaust  I notice the cop behind me , drove normally knowing full well he's running my plates. I pull up in front of my house he turns the lights on. comes to the window and starts his spiel then out of NO WHERE pulls his gun and has it pointing at my head. Screaming to get out of the car I explained to him my drivers door doesn't open it's stuck and I'm going to get out the passengers side. Puts me in cuffs , meanwhile my then wife comes out asks what's going on he told her to shut the fuck up and get back in the house. He thought my sun glasses in between the seat was the barrel of a gun. " apologizes " all the while my young daughter was watching through the window.

29 years old , hydroplaned in the pouring rain and crashed my car. before cell phones walked to call a tow truck came back , State trooper was waiting for me , he's heated I left the seen of an accident. Asshole has me standing in the pouring rain while he's sitting in the cruiser , calls me over hands me a speeding ticket and a marked lanes violation. I asked him if he was crazy he got out the car threatening to kill me , " you don't ever call a trooper crazy "  I fought the tickets , won the marked lanes violation lost the speeding ticket , which was fucking estimated not even radar  later I called the State police barracks to complain about being threatened , Sargent says sarcastically " now why would he and go and do that? " I told him to get fucked and hung up on him.

30 years old , parked in front of my sisters house , hear sirens look out the window they're pulling some guy over behind my car, he's drunk before he has a chance to put the car in park they rip him out so his car hits mine lightly. I'm like hey WTF? They flip out , I'm parked in front of a drive way of my sisters neighbor which non one ever uses. These assholes write me a ticket for being parked in front of a drive way and threaten to tow my fucking car and arrest me!!!

Brought my brother-in-law to the autoparts store , the place had been closed for some time and he didn't know. So we pull in and turn around and immediately get pulled over. 2 cops , one comes to my window and the other to the passengers window. They take him out. Ask me if I have any warrants. I asked why I'm being pulled over , never answers , asks again if I have any warrants. I said none. Sarcastically asks you sure about that? I'm like positive. His response yeah we'll see won't we , I'm like we fucking will. Runs my info comes back clean says you can go 

When I first started dating my son's mother , picked her up at her house driving back in my Mustang. She's seating close to me state trooper pulls me over. MY response was I know it's not for speeding , never tell me why runs our info tells us we're free to go.

One of my old coworkers got into an argument with his wife , He was white , he grabbed a knife police showed up , they repeatedly told him to put the knife down , he refused , they shot and killed him. I could go on-and-on. This shit happens time-and-time-again , no one gives a shit when it happens to white people there is no recourse.

Honestly, someone cannot know they are no more privileged than black people unless they've been black, generally speaking. It is possible you've enjoyed no privileges and a black person you know, was born with the proverbial sliver spoon in their mouth and has lived a life of privilege.

People aren't always as they appear. Someone you envy because you think they have everything anyone could want for, actually have miserable lives.

There is a common confusion regarding the concept of "rights". Most people think that when you have a "right" to something that you should get it no questions asked. For example, the right to have food and shelter, the right to health care, the right to an education, the right to clothing, the right to a job... That just means that you have the right to obtain and access these things. It does not mean you have the right for others to provide you these things.

I'm a bit surprised too at OMR's post. Never ever in the history of the entire world has gays had more rights and privileges. If anything, being gay is kind of the in thing. It's become chic and even fashionable. Just like with Blacks, people have to tip-toe around people that are gay, transexual, and all the other versions of humanity that have developed in recent years; so as not to be accused of racism -- the cardinal sin for White people.
