Backstage at the 2002 Mr Olympia - cool times

Man, how time flies - seeing this video, and remember the past (yes, I was there, some video at 2:07 of me walking around), I haven't missed an Olympia since 1997 and don't plan too this year in December.

Ron who is your favorite bodybuilder of all time? Of the 90s? Of the 00s? Of the 10s?

Favorite bodybuilder in terms of physique at one time was Flex Wheeler.  I just remember, and not sure which contest, when Flex was competing, backstage his back was just freaking amazing, the best of all time, at one Olympia.  Not a freak monster, but the symmetry was at it's best.  He should of won the Mr. Olympia at that contest.

Shawn Ray, believe it or not, arrogant was he was, at one Olympia, looked absolutely incredible. Again, the perfection of symmetry from the front was spot on, and tha tone I did take a picture, just can't remember when.

In terms of mass monsters, has to be be Ronnie Coleman.  At one of his contests, the amount of mass on him, while keeping symmetrical was right now, and you knew it right then that he would win the Olympia.

In terms of backstage, MOST bodybuilders are very cool, understand that pictures and the media is part of the role you have when you are a pro.   Many understand that, but you always have a few that think it is all about them, that they are better than you, that they sigh, look away and perceive you as whatever.  Those are rare, but there are some that actually tell you to stop.  They are the pricks of the business. Some of gotten better over time, but others took a while.

But many others are awesome, both men and women, bikini, fitness, bodybuilding - who get it.  I thank them for making it a fun time and getting awesome pictures in the history of the sport and contests.

There are backstage videos in each Arnold and Olympia, but not sure if they are on You Tube, or just in DVD form.   I just happened to see that one, and there I was in the background...

Awesome Ron. In your opinion is bodybuilding bigger, or smaller than in the 90s, 00s?

How can a person look like Shawn and not be arrogant though?

Regarding the Olympia - I think Shawn could have added 15-lb of lean mass and potentially won an Olympia, but to me it seems like he just didn't want to take those risks to his body.  I have to applaud him for that.

Shawn has even been leaner than this - which is INSANE, by the way:

Bodybuilding is much different now.  Back then, we used to have persona's, characters, people came from all over to get to know the sport, and appreciate it more.  Respect beget respect, and you liked someone or did not like someone, but with cause, with reason.  Nowadays, we have Classic Physique, Men's Physique, and not enough promotion of characters or  bodybuilders.  We would have, leading up to an event, stories and 'Road To' heading into the contests.  Now, to each his own, and not as many people caring to cover the sport (or be able to).  No one wants to put in a lot of time to cover in writing, in thought, now it's just videos which are easy, and that's that.  We live in a video world, and in a picture world, but not much in a 'taking the time' other than 5 minutes to do things.  Mostly because of lack of time, but also because the other divisions, in the amateur world, have truly taken off (aka Bikini, Classic, Men's Physique), and less on bodybuilding.

Also, the rise of Instagram, and other marketing lets 'internet' character build up their own web person, own writer, own marketing team.  It isn't bad, it is just different. And honestly, as we get older, sometimes I would rather spend time with family, my kids, and friends than just spend hours going to take shoots and doing interviews. Don't forget, many of us work other jobs.

Ha - you know, I did ask Shawn that question before - if he is an arrogant ass.... in this interview about 15 years back...

Shawns physique couldn't have handled 10, let alone 15 more pounds... He knew it.

He was smart enough not to fall into that hole.

1999 to 2003 is the time when I used to go to the Olympia every year.  Pretty much all I did in those days was work and lift.  Me and my bros would go to the Olympia expo and load up on free fart powder and horrible tasting protein bars.  We would also take pictures with all the female bodybuilders and fitness competitors.  Ericca Kern was the coolest chick in the building if you ask me.

Watching that vid just reminded me how big a part of my lufe bodybuilding is. I mean its huge for better or worse. I was workin out earlier and i keep saying the same thing in my head and i feel it in my heart, that I love my sport i would cut my own throat i would die for my sport and that i will do whatever it takes and whatever it takes thats what i will do.
