It’s easy for a candidate like Biden, who was in hiding for most of the pandemic, to throw accusations during a debate. Trump knows that Biden opposed the China shutdown in late January. Biden can laugh all he wants. But Biden’s carelessness would crippled this country... had he allowed China, during it’s COVID peak, to enter the USA

Turns out that it was good strategy. Biden's leading in the polls and whether you believe it or not he's leading. So lay low and lower expectations and come across as the calm stable one. The average smuck that doesn't follow the issues are going on personalities and impressions. You see Biden looking relatively cool and calm. Trump  always frowning, red faced, and constantly interrupting and talking over the moderator isn't going to come off well.

He doesn't need to win the votes of people who already like him. He needs to win the votes of people who are looking for any reason not to vote for Biden.

 Nobody won the debate. A ton of petty personal attacks. Biden was more likable. Trump had better content while Biden said nothing at all. Biden didn't wilt while Trump tried to dominate him. In the end I don't have a great confidence in Biden but Trump sure didn't help his cause.

Trump really helped Biden through the debate buy interrupting, Biden trips himself up when he's allowed to speak as he starts to ramble and lose his chain of thought, the constant interruptions helped him hold his line and look more composed. Bit of an own goal.

A huge majority care about personalities even if you don't. You are just one vote. Ask any anti-Trumper why they don't like Trump. They won't mention a single policy just his personality.
In a perfect world only policies and actual accomplishments should matter, but most people don't really follow politics closely and follows those things. They just go by overall impressions which is control by the MSM. Wait until tomorrow. It's all going to be about how Trump kept interrupting Biden and talking over the moderator and turning the whole thing into a circus. This will reinforce the impression left on those who watched it and it will be considered typical Trump by those who didn't.

Trump supporters will still be Trump supporters but I don't think he got a single new fan for those on the fence.

Trump failed to hammer points that were his to easily win, opting instead to interrupt Biden constantly and engage in personal attacks. He seemed unprepared.

Biden misspoke frequently but managed to get his rehearsed, camera addressing points across. Viewers would have noticed how crappy his policies are and how he can't string a sentence together if Trump hadn't been so busy making an ass of himself.

It wasn't that, Trump didn't have a political record to criticize....just his businesses which for the most part was just discarded.   Now he has a political record and he can't do that anymore.
