I first saw Maniac in 1980.  Sick and sleazy, but great.  It screwed my head up for weeks afterward.

That guy who took the shotgun to the head is Tom Savini, he did all the special effects.

Great performance from Joe Spinell too.

It's a great film, one of the last really sleazy ones to come out of NYC. One of the other great scenes in it is the prolonged stalk and kill through the subway. That one always made me sad as a kid because my mother worked nights, and it's pretty realistic to something that could've happened down there, especially in the 80's.

Just checked this out and noticed they did a remake in 2012 with bloody Elijah Wood as the maniac! Watched a bit though and looked good, the special effects and gore top notch.

It was alright, but Wood is no Spinell.

Good to see that there are some Gore hounds around. Savini was the top guy in the macabre genre.

The first 2 are fun films, not Oscar winners, but fun films in the vein of Friday the 13th. I remember the 3rd being junk.

Another funny thing is that the fake head was filled with days old shrimp salad, it was mentioned in one of the commentaries that Savini looked through medical books, and shrimp salad was the best mix of looking realistic and looking good for the camera. They had to get it filmed in one take because they didn't have the right filming permits, and the stink of the mix inside the fake head was making people sick.
