Agree, so symmetrical the additional bulk would be perfect as long as abs remain tight.

I have a vague memory of Serge training hard for the 1975 Olympia.  Then about month before he was notified he was banned because he competed in a competition outside of the IFBB. I assume he slowed his training and went off the juice. Last minute with the filming of Pumping Iron they realized they just had two tall men in the Olympia and invited him back.  He looked amazing but what would he looked like without the break in training?

On a side note in that 1975 contest in Africa he was one of two guys that used free hand squats in his training routine. The other was small class Mr. Universe winner Wilf Sylvester.

Nubret's inspiration was Steve Reeves and it showed.  Serge was handsome man with a physique to match.  Much better than what has been tendered the last few decades.

One of the greats. The physiques of the 70's were aesthetically the best I think.

Do you have any more info on his use of bodyweight squats? Did he do hundreds a day? I know he was wary of thickening his waist so he used the barbell squat with lower weights so this could be a reason.

First time I've heard of a pro bodybuilder using bodyweight squats, though I do know that many (pro) wrestlers do a lot of bodyweight squats as part of their training.

I have the article on Wilf Sylvester buried in my old magazine collection. He said he use to use squats, hacks, leg extensions and leg curls.  For the Universe in 1975 he switched to body weigh squats, leg extensions and leg curls. He said he used 400 reps but he never said how many sets were used

Serge is listed in one of the "Three more Reps" series as using multiple sets of body weight squats.

I'm sure you don't want to hear about my experience but for awhile I was doing 50 ass to grass slow negative bodyweight squats after I trained legs with weights. The pump was unreal. I also feel they contributed to conditioning too. I know in cross fit they are big on the movement but like so many bodyweight stuff they do they cheat to get the reps in under the stop watch. They flop down on the negative as fast as they can and many times go shallow.

On the topic of using moderate weight for development Pellius wrote on this site there was a guy in his gym that did set after set of front squats with 135 and he had great thighs.

Fantastic upper body from the front.

Sadly a build like this won't even win a state level show nowdays.  They all look like shit.

Serge Nubret was an actual legit member of Getbig... sometime back in the mid/late 2000's.

His name was Steve. He was an Asian guy, maybe Okinawan. He just had a 35 lb plate on each side so it was only 115 he would use. Just pumping out those front squats like a machine. I wish I took the time to count the number of reps he did for each set and how many sets he did. Great quads.

When I was writing for Bodyfitness I had the pleasure of meeting/interviewing Serge shortly before he became sick and passed away.
He was in his 70's and was preparing to guest pose. He was still very sharp and engaged.  An interesting guy who I'd have liked to have spoken to for much longer.

I was sad to hear of his passing. It's over a decade ago now too!

I asked Serge about pumping iron and how small a part he played in it.
He explained he had been filmed for more of the movie but at the time was making films in France and was a known actor.  He would have done pumping iron for free as he knew it was an independent film, but was so insulted by the amount they offered to pay him he told them to pull his footage from the film.
