Slightly off topic:
I think vegans are a whack job but there is one thing I do not like about the meat industry- it is incredibly cruel to animals at the large commercial processing facilities. My son started a farm and raises sheep and chickens. Periodically he takes the rams to slaughter and over the past few years he has seen how disgustingly some slaughterhouses work while others are so humane.
Yes you have to kill the animal to eat it, but does that include slitting open a cow that is pregnant and alive, and then taking the fetus out and grinding it up for dog food? I mean- that's the tip of the iceberg. These things were witnessed at a slaughterhouse outside Spartanburg, SC. I literally got sick hearing these stories.
I have always eaten meat and still do, but I am now extremely careful about where I get it and what kind. I am happier eating fish and eggs for protein anyways.
Funny thing about poultry (I periodically find myself behind a chicken truck heading to slaughter in Greenville, SC and see how they cram these birds into essentially shoe boxes, shitting on themselves or laying dead in the cage) - one chicken will make more eggs in a week than you can practically eat. If you slaughter the bird you get to eat once. It makes more sense to consume the eggs...
