Shoulder Surgery
« on: November 28, 2020, 10:58:46 PM »
I had rotator cuff/bicep tendon surgery 4 weeks ago. I've really struggled with sleep every since the surgery. I can fall right to sleep, but wake up in a couple of hours very uncomfortable. At this point I have to get out of bed stretch and move around, this cycle continues through the night. Anyone that has been through this, how long does it take to get back to a normal sleep schedule? I feel like lack of good sleep is hurting my recovery.

I was instructed not to take ibuprofen for 6 weeks, have tried Tylenol with little success.

Four shoulder surgeries!!! I can't imagine having another one.

This why you don't do heavy behind the neck presses

Did they give you any pain meds?  If not, perhaps you can ask for Ambien to help with sleep.

I am surprised you are sleeping in a bed.  Most of the people I know that had it done was instructed to sleep in a recliner.

Fuck the meds.

Try a legitimate CBD oil, and take a combo of zinc/magnesium/melatonin at night.

Or, spend the $ for this:

Was your need for surgery caused by a sudden injury, or something that manifested over years?

What exactly did they do?

This is why you don't lift heavy weights into old age.

Shoulder/bicep tendon had been irritated for about 1.5 years. Was at work removing an inner door panel and felt a pop from head to toe. The biceps upper heads tendon completely detatched. When an MRI was done also showed a medium tear of the rotator cuff.

Procedures
Left shoulder arthroscopy
Subacromial decompression/bursectomy (SAD)
Rotator cuff tendon repair
Subpectoral biceps tendonesis

Haven't done press behind the neck or pull ups in years. Don't lift heavy.

Was given hydrocodone, didn't help much with pain and made me feel nauseous.
Zinc/ magnesium helps to fall asleep. Just wake up a couple hours later very uncomfortable. I'll have to look into CBC oil.

Slept in a recliner the first week, was just as uncomfortable as being in bed. In bed I have a pillow under each arm an two pillows at my head. Also have to wear a padded sling even to bed which is also uncomfortable.

I had a complete rupture of the bicep tendon.  It was a long road back. Six weeks before I could lift and it was those little pink dumbbells that weighed 2.5 pounds. Took around six months before I was lifting heavy. Ripping the bicep completely off effected the entire arm from shoulder down. First time I tried a single pull up was terror filled. Thought I would rip out the surgeon's work.

Whatever you do to manage the pain stay away from the narcotics.

Why go back to lifting heavy at all?

You won't build muscle at all if you are over alkaline.

Strongly disagree.

You just have to be smarter, get more recovery time, and work on mobility.

6 months and you prob won’t be comfortable sleeping on it for a year. Stay away from ibuprofen it delays the healing same with any kind of smoking including weed

Thanks POB. Not really what I wanted to hear about the sleep. But, I can see it taking that long. It is a slow grind. Will stay off ibuprofen, and I don't smoke.

Smarter by not doing it, more recovery by having a lifetime between heavy workouts.  You won't be mobile if injured.

Pull ups is ok, I give it the ok, just keep the tension in the muscle, also only do body weight pull ups
