Arum on Anthony Joshua
« on: December 09, 2020, 10:55:40 AM »
Good ole Jewish Bob, never one to pull punches if you will/

Darren, who you got?
------------

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who co-promotes Kubrat Pulev, is expecting his man to score a sensational knockout of Anthony Joshua on Saturday night in the UK.

Pulev, a mandatory challenger, will attempt to claim Joshua's IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO world titles.

They were initially scheduled to fight in 2017, but Pulev withdrew with a shoulder injury. He was replaced by Carlos Takam, who Joshua stopped in a tough fight.

The only defeat on Pulev's record, came at the hands of then unified champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Arum is still not sold on Joshua's class, after watching him get stopped in seven rounds by Andy Ruiz back in June of 2019. Joshua got revenge in December of the same year, after outboxing Ruiz over twelve rounds for a lopsided twelve round unanimous decision.

“It's one thing to box and run around the ring, making out you're second coming of Muhammad Ali when you're fighting a fat, obese Andy Ruiz - but it's going to be a different story when you're fighting a fit and ready Pulev, who's in great shape and a good boxer," Arum told Marc Gatford of Betway Insider.

“I believe Kubrat will be able to match Joshua with boxing ability and will have an opportunity to catch Joshua and knock him out. Pulev is very strong and has good pedigree, so Joshua won't be able to run and do what he did to Ruiz in the rematch.

"Pulev has the ability to corner Joshua and to take him out, so I believe not only is Pulev going to win the fight but he's going to win it by knockout. We promoted Ruiz 30 times and most of the time he had trouble impacting opponents with his power, so the fact he devastated Joshua so badly indicates to me Joshua has a big weakness and that is his inability to take a punch.”

“I'm not a fool, I'm talking about what I've seen: I saw Anthony Joshua got knocked on his ass and thoroughly beaten not so long ago.”

Bob knows AJ will end the Fury Express. He's praying for Pulev as he knows Fury will beat him and he'll then control all the heavy weight marbles. Ruiz loss was a fluke. Nothing more nothing less. AJ is numero uno.

I'd like to see AJ vs Fury. It would be a good fight.

I agree. If we don't get that fight plus Crawford Spence next year, then boxing is desd.

What happened to the wilder deal? Wasn’t he supposed to fight Joshua?

He's off the rails. Next guy with a pulse that gets in the ring with Wilder will send him into retirement.

I watched some Pulev fights on YT today as I didn't know much about him. His record is good, but not sure about the talent level of his previous opponents.

AJ handled Ruiz easily in the rematch. I dont know, it just seems any of these modern day guys, put them back in the Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis days, they would get their asses handed to them.
And even more so a generation back (Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Holmes, etc).

Fury and Joshua could have fought in any era.  Not saying they are better than Ali, Foreman, Holmes, etc but at their best, they give any heavyweight a tough night.  Joseph Parker, Andy Ruiz, Povetkin and a few others would have been solid 80's and 90's contenders.

Appreciate the input. I was a HUGE fan growing up and into the late 90's / early 2000's, but interest faded a bit right around when Klitschko became champion. (Around 2000 I guess).
And his fights in that time period. (All just sort of seemed predictable).  But watching again is fun, got my interest in it back. Even for cardio, 8 rounds on heavy bag is a good workout compared to just a treadmill). Even got my speed-bag chops back rather quickly (its not very hard anyways, but its fun).

Now if I can find some homeless guy to tease w/ a Quarter-Pounder, or find a drunk at Aldi's, maybe I can test out my skills??  ::)

Take a couple of quarter pounders w/cheese to Aldi and hang out for a few minutes.  You'll find out soon enough.

Abraham, good call on the fight, Pulev didnt look to be in AJ's league.
He's kind of tough (taking 4 knockdowns and trying to hang in) but that's not a great quality for later in life for many.
Most of the brain-dead ex-boxers were the tough ones who could take a pounding, and did (massive concussions, CTE type of stuff).

Where the glass jawwed (quickly knocked out) didnt take all the damage and are better off in later years. Rough way to make a living.
