Medical insurance providers, Medicare and Medicaid regulate what hospitals are paid. The last time I was hospitalized the bill was around $20,000, insurance discounted $17,000 of it and paid less then $3,000. I paid 0.00.
Had I been uninsured, I would have been on the hook for the whole $20,000
