Melania Trump breaks her silence about the deadly coup attempt with complaints about 'salacious gossip' in a typo-filled statement

First lady Melania Trump lashed out at her critics on Monday in a typo-ridden statement, her first public remarks since last Wednesday's violent siege of the Capitol by her husband's loyalists.

She expressed sympathy for the five people who died during or from injuries sustained amid last Wednesday's riot, including the rioters, and named each of the individuals. She misspelled the name of 35-year-old Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed by Capitol Police as she and others attempted to break through a door inside the Capitol building.

The first lady vaguely condemned the attempted coup, saying she was "disappointed and disheartened with what happened last week." She had much harsher words for those she accused of spreading "salacious gossip" about her, apparently referring to reports about her response to the events.

CNN first reported on Friday that the first lady was overseeing a photo shoot of decorative objects at the White House as deadly chaos consumed Washington last week following the president's speech to his gathered supporters.

"I find it shameful that surrounding these tragic events there has been salacious gossip, unwarranted personal attacks, and false misleading accusations on me – from people who are looking to be relevant and have an agenda," she said. "This time is solely about healing our country and its citizens. It should not be used for personal gain."

Two of the first lady's top aides, chief of staff Stephanie Grisham and White House social secretary Anna Cristina Niceta, resigned Wednesday evening partly in response to the first lady's refusal to respond to the riots, CNN reported. Grisham was one of the Trump family's longest-serving loyalists and most recently served as a communications director and speechwriter for the first lady.

Notably, Trump copied a line in her Monday statement word for word from the speech she gave at the Republican National Convention last August, CNN's Kate Bennett reported. The statement also included several grammatical errors, including misplaced apostrophes.

The first lady has a history with plagiarism: She lifted several sections from former first lady Michelle Obama's 2008 Democratic National Convention speech for her 2016 RNC speech. She claimed that she had written the high-profile speech "with as little help as possible," but a Trump campaign speechwriter later took the blame for the plagiarism.

Did she defend (or even mention) her husband?

She seems absolutely repulsed by him.

The whole family probably repulses her.

"inquiring"
Traditionally, enquire simply meant “ask,” while inquire was used for formal investigations. In the UK, the two words are used interchangeably, although inquire is still the more commonly used word for formal or official investigations. In the United States, inquire is the strongly preferred spelling in all uses.

Extremists move to secret online channels to plan for Inauguration Day in D.C.
Some pro-Trump extremists have used the platforms to suggest skipping local rallies to focus instead on a big turnout in D.C. at Biden's inauguration.

Right-wing extremists are using channels on the encrypted communication app Telegram to call for violence against government officials on Jan. 20, the day President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated, with some extremists sharing knowledge of how to make, conceal and use homemade guns and bombs.

The messages are being posted in Telegram chatrooms where white supremacist content has been freely shared for months, but chatter on these channels has increased since extremists have been forced off other platforms in the wake of the Jan. 6 siege of the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump rioters.

Telegram is a Dubai-based messaging service that does little moderation of its content and has a sizable international user base, particularly in eastern Europe and the Middle East.

In the days since the Capitol attack, for example, a U.S. Army field manual and exhortations to "shoot politicians" and "encourage armed struggle" have been posted in a Telegram channel that uses "fascist" in its name.

Chris Sampson, chief of research at the defense research institute Terror Asymmetrics Project on Strategy, Tactics and Radical Ideologies, said his group is focused on and concerned about users of the channel and has alerted the FBI about it. (TAPSTRI is run by Malcolm Nance, an NBC News terrorism analyst.)

“When they start calling for assassinations, when they start calling for action versus sharing information, we flag them a little higher," said Sampson. "Some channels merely swap information, but then they accelerated into conversations of where to be.”

FBI warns of possible armed protests in all 50 state capitols
JAN. 12, 202102:56
Documents shared via the channel's file manager include "US Army explosives and demolitions manual," and "US Army Engineer course," as well as white supremacist content.

A post explaining how to radicalize Trump supporters to neo-Nazism has also circulated on the channel as well as other far right extremist channels.

Extremists are aware that they are under scrutiny, however, and in the fallout of the riot have been using online platforms to recalibrate their movements.

On Monday the FBI sent a memo to law enforcement agencies warning about possible armed protests at all 50 state Capitols starting Jan. 16.

Right-wing extremists vow to return to Washington for Joe Biden's inauguration
In response, some Trump supporters with extremist views have used encrypted platforms to post warnings about avoiding local rallies in the coming days and instead wait for a big turnout in Washington at Biden's inauguration on Jan. 20.

"Do not attend armed protests at state capitols before inauguration! Possible sinister plot hatched by radical left to take away gun rights!" someone posted in a Telegram chatroom with thousands of members favored by the far right.

After Jan. 6, far-right extremists starting posting calls to arms for "round 2" on Inauguration Day in Washington.

A "Million Militia March" is also being planned, as well as a "Million Martyr March," the latter in honor of Ashli Babbitt, a veteran and a Trump supporter who was fatally shot during the storming of the Capitol. Babbitt has been hailed as a "martyr" in multiple posts.

An NBC News review, however, found little concrete planning occurring online for these events.

Moving to Telegram
News updates and content meant to inspire people to fight for President Donald Trump still abound on mainstream platforms.

A video stoking fears about a stolen election and galvanizing those who might want to fight on behalf of Trump was on YouTube for 12 hours on Monday. Ominous music plays in the background as Trump speeches are woven together with biblical verses. The video was recently removed for "violating YouTube's Community Guidelines."

But far-right Telegram chat room membership has ballooned in recent days, particularly since the popular platform Parler, financed by the wealthy conservative backer Rebekah Mercer, went offline Monday after Amazon rescinded its web-hosting service.

There are multiple Telegram channels for the right-wing group called the Proud Boys, and the largest of them have more than 28,000 members. One channel frequented by Proud Boys has been renamed to attract ex-Parler users.

"Now that they forced us off the main platforms it doesn't mean we go away, it just means we are going to go to places they don't see," a user posted in the chatroom intended for refugees from Parler.

Membership in that channel has increased by more than 10,000 in recent days. In September, the chatroom had 1,365 members. On Monday, it hosted 15,990 members, according to Megan Squire, professor of computer science at Elon University and a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center who tracks online extremism.

Another channel intended for Proud Boys has gained 8,870 followers, a 54 percent increase, since Jan. 6.

All of Parler's public posts have been preserved by a researcher who uses the Twitter handle @donk_enby. Telegram users posted about it on Monday, saying there is no hope of retroactively deleting posts or identifying information.

Gab, another platform favored by the far right, was also offline on Monday.

Squire said that when extremists are forced to shift from one platform to another it "creates an opportunity" for them "to make mistakes and reveal identifying information."

JAN. 7, 202105:06
But Frank Figliuzzi, a former FBI assistant director and an NBC News national security analyst, said he worries about the double-edged sword when a platform known to host extremists is shut down.

"We had all this success with ISIS: We took out their command site but we also took away the ability to see the next lone wolf. We force them into the dark corners of the internet," Figliuzzi said.

"History repeats itself. We saw with Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, they knocked these guys out and boom, where are they?"

Ex-Wife of Retired Lieutenant Colonel with Zip Ties at Capitol Reported Him

Larry Rendell Brock -- the retired Air Force lieutenant colonel who's one of the Capitol insurrectionists last week -- can thank his ex-wife for his arrest.

As we reported -- Brock was the guy photographed holding zip ties inside the Senate chamber and was pretty easy to ID as he was decked out in body armor, a military helmet and a tag with a Punisher skull ... but his former spouse provided further intel to law enforcement.

According to a federal affidavit ... Brock's ex-wife of 18 years called the FBI National Threat Operations Center (NTOC) on Friday to turn him in.

The woman told the feds she recognized him from his military getup, adding ... "I just know that when I saw this was happening I was afraid he would be there. I think you already know he was there. It is such a good picture of him and I recognize his patch."

The affidavit says a second witness also reported Brock to the FBI the same day, telling the authorities ... "It looks like him and he has pilot wings on his chest in this picture. He was an A-10 pilot. Worked at L3, and he still has contacts that work with L3 that knew he was flying to Washington DC."

Brock was arrested shortly afterward and is facing one count of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

As for why he did what he did, he says it's because "The President asked for his supporters to be there to attend, and I felt like it was important."

He has denied any nefarious intentions with the zip ties though, claiming he found them inside the Capitol and planned to return them to police.

Of course, another man was seen with zip ties, and coupled with explosives being found near the area of the attempted coup ... it sure seems like the riots could have been much worse.

The FBI is still working on tracking down all involved and making arrests ... but they're off to a pretty good start.
