Strong evidence' shows rioters intended to 'capture and assassinate elected officials,' prosecutors say
Prosecutors said Jacob Chansley's 'words and actions at the Capitol' indicated that the rioters intended to "capture and assassinate" lawmakers.

A court filing in the case of one of the accused Capitol rioters says “strong evidence” suggests that their intent was to capture and assassinate members of Congress.

The statement comes in a motion filed by federal prosecutors in Arizona, who are seeking to have Jacob Chansley detained pending trial. Chansley, also known as Jake Angeli, was seen wearing horns, a fur headdress and face paint during the riot.

The motion, filed in federal court in Phoenix, says Chansley should be detained because he wants to return to Washington for the inauguration.

“Strong evidence, including Chansley’s own words and actions at the Capitol, supports that the intent of the Capitol rioters was to capture and assassinate elected officials of the United States government,” the document says.

However, it does not specify what statements of Chansley indicate that intent, nor do the actual charges against him make any reference to that intent. Chansley is charged with interfering with police, interrupting the proceedings, entering the Capitol without authority, disorderly conduct, and entering restricted areas.

His detention hearing is set for 2:30 p.m. MT.

The document describes Chansley as an unemployed persistent drug user with mental problems.

“Chansley has spoken openly about his belief that he is an alien, a higher being, and he is here on Earth to ascent to another reality,” the document says. It quotes him saying in a YouTube video as saying, “I am able to perceive multiple different frequencies of light beyond my five senses and it allows me to see into these other higher dimensions.”

Chansley was among the people whose images became the public faces of the riot. Donning a fur hat with horns and American-flag inspired face paint, Angeli stormed the Capitol bare-chested and gloated in the aftermath.

"The fact that we had a bunch of our traitors in office hunker down, put on their gas masks and retreat into their underground bunker, I consider that a win," Chansley, 33, said last week.

Chansley is a QAnon-supporting YouTuber who also was among the pro-Trump protesters who gathered outside the Maricopa County Elections Department in Phoenix on Nov. 5, claiming that the election was stolen.

This whole thing still smells like shit to me. From the outside in, it looks like the far left were very happy about this going down in order to fuel their impeachment agenda.

You leftists are omitting the Church that was trashed in Lafayette Square ... and billions of dollars worth of stores and businesses trashed around the whole country ...

One group gets the politicians to their knees pledging to "listen" .... the other group gets accusations of "terroists", "armed insurrection" ... cognitive dissonance much?
You're being lied to and set-up for a communist dictatorship, it's clear as day. Take it from me, you've eaten the bait, hook, line and sinker.

The QAnon Shaman Wants a Trump Pardon for Storming the Capitol

In between taking selfies on the floor of the Senate and using a bullhorn to call for the assassination of several congresspeople, Jacob Chansley, aka the QAnon Shaman, took time out of his busy insurrection schedule to write a message to Vice President Mike Pence.

“It’s only a matter of time. Justice is coming,” Chansley said in the threatening note, quoting directing from a message posted last September by the anonymous leader of QAnon.

This revelation was contained in a court filing in Arizona, where prosecutors are arguing that Chansley, who also goes by the name Jake Angeli and believes he’s an alien, should not be allowed out on bail because of threats he’s made to attend next week’s inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.

Chansley last week told VICE News that he “regrets nothing” and was planning to travel back to Washington, D.C. on Jan. 20.

But now a lawyer representing Chansley is calling on President Donald Trump to pardon his client, claiming the QAnon icon only entered the Capitol because he was following directions from the president.

“My client had heard the oft-repeated words of President Trump,” Albert Watkins told VICE News in an email.

“The words and invitation of a president are supposed to mean something. Given the peaceful and compliant fashion in which Mr. Chansley comported himself, it would be appropriate and honorable for the president to pardon Mr. Chansley and other like-minded, peaceful individuals who accepted the president’s invitation with honorable intentions.”

Moments before the pro-Trump mob descended on the Capitol, Trump told his supporters, in a speech in front of the White House, that “we will walk down to the Capitol” and “together we will drain the Washington swamp, and we will clean up the corruption in our nation’s Capitol.”

Trump was this week impeached for “willfully” making statements “that encouraged lawless action at the Capitol” and Chansley’s legal team is clearly hoping to leverage that to get their client a pardon.

The court filing describes in detail Chansley’s actions once he entered the Capitol.

Prosecutors say Chansley committed a felony because he was carrying a deadly weapon into the building. That weapon was a six-foot spear, complementing the rest of his costume, which included horns, a furry coyote tail headdress, red, white, and blue face paint, and tan pants.

The shirtless Chansley, whose torso is covered in tattoos of symbols linked to the white supremacy movement, was also carrying a bullhorn, which the filing says he used to rile up the crowd inside the building.

“Chansley approached [Capitol Police] Officer [Keith] Robishaw and screamed, among other things, that this was their house, and that they were there to take the Capitol, and to get Congressional leaders,” the affidavit said.

“Chansley also used his bullhorn to communicate that they were there to take out several United States congressmen.”

Defending his client on CNN on Thursday night, Watkins called Chansley a “gentle, soft-spoken human being. He is not a violent man.”

But prosecutors say Chansley is a flight risk and poses a danger to the public. “He is unhinged from reality, while his actions at the Capitol demonstrate a willingness to act on those mistaken beliefs,” the filing reads. “He is a flight risk due to this combination.”

During an interview with the FBI on Jan. 9 in Phoenix, Chansley told agents that he planned to drive to the Arizona State Capitol. To prove his point, he showed them his costume that he had in his car, which now included a “rubber hammer-shaped mallet.”

A pretrial Services (PTS) report submitted on Jan. 11 recommended that Chansley should be granted bail, even though it recognized he posed a flight risk.

However, the prosecutors argued in Thursday’s filing that Chansley had lied to the PTS officer when he said that he had never tried any other drugs than cannabis. The prosecutors pointed to a litany of freely available online records of Chansley admitting to routine use of psychedelic drugs, such as mushrooms and peyote — including on his own podcast called “Jake Angeli — Keys for our Ascension.”

The prosecutors also argued that Chansley’s mental health had not been properly assessed by the PTS. As well as being an adherent to the QAnon conspiracy theory, Chansley has openly admitted to “his belief that he is an alien, a higher being, and he is here on Earth to ascend to another reality.”

Chansley’s bail hearing is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

'Kill him with his own gun' rioters chanted as a DC police officer fought for his life
Officer Mike Fanone describes for the first time publicly how he self-deployed to the Capitol on Jan. 6 to defend democracy.

WASHINGTON — DC Police officer Mike Fanone remembers wondering if his four daughters would be OK without him as he was beaten, tased and suffered a heart attack.

It all happened as he and his fellow police officers and commanders were fighting a pitched battle with rioters in a narrow hallway at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

The Metropolitan Police Department almost never lets its line officers speak publicly to the media, but the new acting chief made an exception to offer a window into the minds of heroes who fought thousands of attackers in defense of democracy.

Fanone’s been working plainclothes for a decade and could have spent the riot waiting at his desk. But he and his police/duck hunting partner Jimmy Albright self-deployed to the Capitol.

"I said, ‘We’re going to go. Suit up,’ he told Albright as soon as he got to the office on that horrible day.

The 40-year-old hadn't taken his uniform or riot gear out of the plastic bags that were issued to him a decade ago. After he put the equipment on, a friend had to tell him to pull off the price tags.

Ofc. Mike Fanone describes being dragged into a crowd of thousands of rioters at the Capitol and being beaten, tazed, hit with bear spray and hurt badly enough to bring on a heart attack

He went in a door on the south side of the Capitol and made his way down to the basement, where he found a police commander dry-heaving from the CS gas. The commander straightened his cap and silver eagles and prepared to return to the fight.

"I remember thinking, this dude looks like George BLEEPING Patton," Fanone said.

Fanone then found officer Daniel Hodges, bleeding being squished between a door and the mob screaming, "heave-ho."

Fanone said it was like medieval combat.

"Dig in, MPD," he shouted as a few dozen officers tried to hold a hallway entrance.

The narrow space helped neutralize the massive crowd's advantage over the outnumbered officers.

"It was like the real-life 300 [movie] minus the six-pack abs, which none of us have," he said.

Somehow the mob grabbed Fanone out of the line, and dragged him out into the crowd alone, beating, tasing and smashing him with flagpoles.

"I remember thinking the moment I got outside, like holy BLEEP, there’s a lot of goddamn people out here," Fanone said.

A photo from overhead shows Fanone face down on the ground, a rioter holding a police baton over his neck.

At one point, one of the rioters moved like he was going to impale him on the end of a flagpole.

"Guys were like grabbing gear off my vest," he said. "I remember guys chanting, like ‘Kill him with his own gun!’"

He held on to it.

"I thought about killing people," Fanone remembers.

But he thought better of it.

"I probably shoot a couple, and then they’re going to take the gun away and kill me," he said.

Officer Mike Fanone said he's mind went to his four daughters as rioter beat and tazed him.

Fanone thought of his four daughters.

"I have kids!" he told the rioters.

A couple of them showed mercy.

"Thank you for that," he said. "But BLEEP you for being there! The only person I credit with saving my life is Jimmy Albright."

Albright pulled him back into the hallway and away from the mob.

If they assault the Capitol again on Jan. 20, will he go back on duty and go back?

"Oh hell yeah...I went there for my brothers and sisters in law enforcement," Fanone said. "There’s no army on earth that would prevent me from fighting alongside those guys."

Fanone spent a day and a half in the hospital. He said the attack brought on what he calls a "mild" heart attack. He’s on sick leave now, but said there’s no way that will stop him from returning if he's needed again.

Under Donald Trump's Watch, the National Debt Increased by $7.8 Trillion

ECONOMY
NATIONAL DEBT
JOE BIDEN
During President Donald Trump's tenure in the White House, the national debt grew by some $7.8 trillion—or nearly 40 percent compared to the amount when former President Barack Obama left office in January 2017.

In his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump said he would "get rid" of the national debt during eight years in office. The president is actually leaving office after four years, having lost his re-election bid to President-elect Joe Biden. But instead of addressing the national debt during his four years in office, the Trump administration oversaw a significant increase even before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the government to pass massive stimulus legislation.

When Trump was inaugurated on January 20, 2017, the national debt stood at about $19.9 trillion. As he leaves office this month, the national debt has grown to about $27.7 trillion. That's an increase of 39.2 percent.

The annual deficit under Trump ranks as the third highest of any president in history, with the other two being former Presidents Abraham Lincoln and George W. Bush who both oversaw wars during their tenures in the White House, according to Eugene Steuerle, co-founder of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, as reported by The Washington Post. Although much of the deficit spending under Trump came as a result of the COVID-19 stimulus, the debt was growing rapidly even before 2020.

ALEX WONG/GETTY
Economists have pointed to Trump's signature legislative achievement, the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, for pushing the national debt upward. The tax cuts, which largely benefited the wealthiest Americans and corporations, left a significant shortfall in tax revenue. The Congressional Budget Office projected in January that the annual deficit would be about $1 trillion going forward due largely to Trump's tax cuts.

$2,000 Stimulus Checks Would 'Significantly' Help 60% of Earners: Report
At the start of 2020, the national debt had already increased by about $3.3 trillion since Trump took office three years earlier. That came after the growing debt had stabilized in Obama's final years in office. The former Democratic president had inherited an economic recession, leading the government to turn to deficit spending to shore up the economy. This caused the national debt to continue to grow substantially during his first four years in the White House.

When the pandemic hit the U.S. last year, it was clear to most economists that Congress needed to act quickly through massive stimulus legislation as much of the country entered stringent lockdowns in March. Congress passed the bipartisan $2.2 trillion CARES Act in the spring and then pushed through another $900 billion package in December. While economists say that the debt will need to be addressed eventually, most agree that the priority right now should be to address the economic fallout of the pandemic.

"As always, there are some who seem more concerned about the rise in federal budget deficits and public debt than by the rise in joblessness and losses of income generated by the shock," Josh Bivens, director of research, at the Economic Policy Institute, wrote in a blog post. "But prioritizing the restraint of debt in coming years over the restoration of pre-crisis unemployment rates is bad economics," Bivens added.

Biden and the Democrats have already promised more COVID-19 relief, which would be expected to increase the national debt further before lawmakers work to reduce annual budget deficits. At the same time, the president-elect has said he aims to repeal Trump's tax cuts and raise taxes on the wealthy, which would be expected to shore up additional government revenue.

Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.

DONALD TRUMP
An FBI witness says that members of the far-right Proud Boys had hoped to assassinate Vice President Mike Pence and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi during last week's violent storming of the U.S. Capitol.

An FBI special agent made the claim in an affidavit as part of a criminal complaint against 43-year-old Dominic Pezzola, who is accused of taking part in the riot in support of President Donald Trump's false claims that the presidential election was "stolen." Pezzola, who is also known as "Spaz," allegedly used a shield taken from a Capitol Police officer to smash a Capitol window before entering the building. An FBI witness said that the group Pezzola was with had discussed committing violent acts that went far beyond property damage.

"[The witness] stated that other members of the group talked about things that they had done during the day, and they said that anyone they got their hands on they would have killed, including Nancy Pelosi," the affidavit, which was filed Wednesday, reads. "[The witness] further stated that members of this group, which included 'Spaz,' said that they would have killed [Vice President] Mike Pence if given the chance."

"The group said it would be returning on the '20th,' which your affiant takes to mean the Presidential Inauguration scheduled for January 20, 2021," it continues. "And that they plan to kill every single 'm-fer' they can. [The witness] stated the men said they all had firearms or access to firearms."

Pezzola, of Rochester, New York, was arrested Friday and charged with obstruction of an official proceeding, destruction of government property and unlawfully entering a restricted building or grounds, with the possibility of additional charges to come. He could potentially face 20 years in prison if convicted.

Court documents reference a video of Pezzola and associates after the building was breached. Pezzola is pictured with a cigar celebrating a "victory smoke in the Capitol" while describing the breach as "f*cking awesome." The documents also note that Pezzola describes himself as a "Marine vet / boxer / patriot/ Proud Boy 2nd°" in a profile on the Telegram messaging app.

Multiple members of the Proud Boys have been identified as part of the violent mob that took part in the riot at the Capitol, which resulted in the deaths of at least five people. The pro-Trump group gained particular notoriety last September when Trump urged them to "stand back and stand by" while refusing to directly repudiate white supremacist and militia groups during a presidential debate.

Additional security measures, including a large deployment of National Guard troops, are being taken in preparation for potential violence surrounding President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration next week. Trump was impeached on Wednesday for allegedly inciting the Capitol riot. The outgoing president has also been banned from major social media platforms over concerns that his rhetoric could inspire further violence.

Newsweek reached out to the offices of Pence and Pelosi for comment.
