It's sad to me that we've come to the point in our history where any politician that votes their conscience rather than party line is labeled. That's what we should hope for from our representatives. If you look at a senators voting record and for the last10 years they've voted party line why even have a human there? Replace them with a computer or hell, a monkey that can push a blue or a red button when queued.

I got the joke and LFMAO. Only by looking up on Wikipedia, did I discover that he ran under the Know Nothing Party label after the Whigs started fizzling. The Know Nothings were getbiggers, railing against the Irish (and German?) immigrant scum, and certainly Jews and Blacks, although the Blacks were still enslaved and the Jews were not on the horizon here yet.

I acknowledge your point. But there are times when the people don't have the insight and the information you as their elected leader has. If your only job was to vote along party lines, you really aren't needed. I have offered a 10 year example. The reason is, yes, most of the time, like McCain, the vote is along party lines, but there are times when the party is just wrong for whats best for the country, not half the country, and you or at least I want people with the courage to vote for what's right for the country, not what the party wants.
