Not to be a spoilsport but it felt like they were running on fumes after just a few episodes. Point blank 80s commentary on modern times is biting and fun, but how many times is it biting and fun? Revisiting the films is fun but, again, it's a limited resource.
Just don't expect groundbreaking excellence. It's fun if you're a child of the 80s and grew up with the films. It's certainly not a disaster and didn't shit on the films. It would struggle to stand alone without them propping it up, however.
Maccio's acting is amazing. He has managed zero improvement in 30+ years. If anything, he's even more implausible now in a gi than he was, and his bamboo flute kata hokum is guaranteed to make even the hardest core Karate Kid fanatic embarrassed for everyone in the room eduring it, motionless, with perfect, implacable zen, never daring to be the first to proclaim how painfully lame it is. If you were a marine in the pacific theater, and you got captured, this is what those dirty japs would make you watch. Ralph bamboo flute Macchio 'acting' japanesely. There's nothing quite like it and everyone involved should have known better.
Johnny, on the other hand, nails his role as the 80s jock who never evolved and finds himself an old fish in new waters. He gets a fair few zingers from the writers and gives them black belt delivery. Dude's solid. You can't help but like the character and his performance is damn good.
I quit after 2 seasons on YouTube since season 3 was only on Netflix. I've already experienced the programming on offer from their in-your-face white hating castratrix agenda here in Aus, so I'm not giving them any of my dollars. Johnny damn sure wouldn't either.
